All contracts were related to problems connected either with the preliminary design of production systems or with the management of these systems. These waves are distinguished by their dispersion and reso nance, and are used in many investigations - in the determination of the structure of the medium (the existence of surface layers and waveguides), in the determination of the coordinates and properties of the source (in par ticular its energy and mechanism), in the identification of subterranean exploSions, in the mapping of micro- seisms, in the tracing of storms, etc. Outlines of the wide literature concerning surface waves can be found in [2, 9, 40J. Surface waves can be classed as Rayleigh or Love waves, depending on their velocity and polarization: the displacements of particles in Rayleigh waves are parallel, and the displacements in Love waves perpendicular, to the vertical plane containing the direction of propagation (some variation from this polarization is possible close to the source or in the presence of horizontal inhomogeneities in the medium). The present work is devoted to the calculation and investigation of Love waves in a vertically layered medium. The method used is based on the spectral theory of linear differential operators. Accumulated experiences with radiogrametrical and densinometric methods of quantitating appendicular bone mass now facilitate the detection of changes in bone mineral content heretofore unrecognized by routine roentgenographic vertebral analysis. During this same decade, the diagnosis of metabolic bone disease and the skeletal response to remedial therapeutic ma neuvers have also been facilitated by the routine application of the bone biopsy. Improvements in tinctorial techniques, stan dardization in methodology essential for adequate preparation of thin undecalcified specimens, and the incorporation of tetracy cline bone formation or mineralization 'markers' should now herald the 'routine' use of this diagnostic procedure. The past ten years have brought enormous advances in computers and comput…ational techniques on the one hand and in measurements and data processing on the other. The impact of such capabilities has led to a revolution both in the understanding of the structure of turbulence as well as in the predictive methods for application in technology. The early ideas on turbulence being an array of complicated phenomena and having some form of reasonably strong coherent struc ture have become well substantiated in recent experimental work. We are still at the very beginning of understanding all of the aspects of such coherence and of the possibilities of incorporating such structure into the analytical models for even those cases where the thin shear layer approximation may be valid. Nevertheless a distinguished body of 'eddy chasers' has come into existence. The structure of mixing layers which has been studied for some years in terms of correlations and spectral analysis is also getting better understood. Both probability concepts such as intermittency and conditional sampling as well as the concept of large scale structure and the associated strain seem to indicate possibilities of distinguishing and synthesizing 'engulfment' and molecular mixing. 484 pp. Englisch.

The Workshop… was the natural evolution of the two previous ones. The main goal of the first edition (Erice 1984) was to start a scientific interaction between Astronomers and Computer Scientists. Aim of the second (Erice 1986) was to look at the progress in data analysis methods and dedicated hardware technology. Data analysis problems become harder whenever the data are poor in statistics or the signal is weak and embedded in structured background. Experiments collecting data of such a nature require new and non-standard methodologies. Possibilistic approaches could be merged with the statistical ones, in order to formalize all the knowledge used by the scientists to reach conclusions. Moreover, the last decade has been characterized by very fast developments of Intelligent Systems for data analysis (knowledge based systems, . ) that would be useful to support astronomers in complex decision making. For these reasons, the last edition of the workshop was intended to provide an overview on the state of the art in the data analysis methodologies and tools in the new frontieres of the astrophysics (y-astronomy, neutrino astronomy, gravitational waves, background radiation and extreme cosmic ray energy spectrum). This prediction is widely known as 'Moore's Law' and eventually culminated in the Semiconductor Industry Association (SIA) technology road map [1]. The SIA road map has been a guide for the in dustry leading them to continued wafer and die size growth, increased transistor density and operating frequencies, and defect density reduction. To mention a few numbers; the die size increased 7% per year, the smallest feature sizes decreased 30% and the operating frequencies doubled every two years. As a consequence of these trends both the number of transistors and the power dissi pation per unit area increase.In the near future the maximum power dissipation per unit area will be reached. Down-scaling of the supply voltage is not only the most effective way to reduce power dissipation in general it also is a necessary precondition to ensure device reliability by reducing electrical fields and device temperature, to prevent device degradation. A draw-back of this solution is an increased signal propa gation delay, which results in a lower data-processing speed performance. 172 pp. Englisch.

We felt it appropriate to have a full course devoted to a discussion of the information to be gained on the fundamental interactions from the study of low energy systems. In this kind of physics, which is characterized experimentally by very intense particle sources and very sensitive apparatuses, one can search for rare events and can perform precise measurements. We hope that each book in this series will present a clear account of the present state of knowledge in a particular field of physical chemistry to research workers in related fields, to research students, and for the preparation of undergraduate and post-graduate lectures. Each chapter describes the theoretical develop ment of one area of study and the appropriate experimental techniques; the results presented are chosen to illustrate the theory rather than to attempt a comprehensive review. The first volume published in 1972 was concerned with the reactions of small molecules and free radicals in the gas phase. The development of flash photolysis in the 1950s paved the way by making it possible to generate free radicals in sufficient concentration for a spectroscopic' snapshot' to reveal their molecular structure. Their role in kinetic systems could then be followed directly, rather than be inferred from mechanism. The shock tube enabled gas mixtures to be heated to any desired temperature in a time which was shorter than subsequent chemical reactions. Discharge-flow methods enabled the reactions of atoms and free radicals to be studied directly. 296 pp. Englisch.

The subject of the course was 'Cell Growth', with participants (from 16 different countries) selected worldwide. The study of cell growth has been one of humanity's most challenging problems and it has been approached from many differ ent points of view, such as biochemistry, genetic engineering, cell biology, zoology, oncology, immunology, biophysics and a few other fields. It has been very difficult to keep such varied points of view all in one room and in one audience, because of the heterogeneity of background and inherent difficulty of communica tion, with occasional nominalistic rather than factual debates. On the one hand, various workers in quantum field theory were continuing to make startling progress in different directions. On the other hand, many new problems were arising from these various domains. Thus we feIt that 1976 might be an appropriate occasion both to review recent developments and to encourage interactions between researchers from different backgrounds working on a common set of unsolved problems. An important aspect of the school, as it took place, was the participation of and stimulating interaction between such a broad spectrum of theorists. The central topics of the school were chosen from the areas of solitons, phase transitions, critical behavior, the renormalization group, gauge fields and the analysis of nonrenormalizable field theories. A noteworthy feature of these topics is the interpene tration of ideas from quantum field theory and statistical mechanics whose inherent unity is seen in the functional integral formulation of quantum field theory. The present volume and its companion volume 2 document the proceedings of the above-mentioned Section on Solution Chemistry of Surfactants. In 1976 there was held an international symposium on Micellization, Solubilization and Microemulsions in Albany, l the proceedings of which have been chronicled in two volumes. A great deal of material dealing with micelles contributed by a legion of prominent researchers constitutes these volumes but a few subtopics were not adequately covered; so it was deemed appro priate to cover these topics as well as the recent progress in the general area of aggregation of surfactants in this Section. Also as it is the amphiphilicity or amphipathicity\* of a surfact ant molecule which is responsible for both adsorption at inter faces and aggregation in solution, so it was considered quite apropos to include the topic of adsorption at interfaces in this Section. The rapid growth in the number of papers on heavily doped semiconductors makes it difficult to review the results obtained so far. Therefore, many investigations carried out in 1966-7, par ticularly those on AIIIBV semiconductors, are not discussed in the present monograph, which represents the state of the knowledge in 1965. Nevertheless, the author hopes that, in spite of this, the book will be useful. An attempt is made, first, to review investigations of heavily doped semiconductors from a certain viewpoint and, sec ondly, to suggest some ideas (Chap. 5) which may be controversial but which are intended to stimulate further studies of heavily doped semiconductors which can be regarded as a special case of dis ordered systems. By means of slow and empirical selections, it has been possible to greatly increase both quantity and quality of plant crops. This procedure has brought the most… useful cereals to a state of refinement that seems to be difficult to further improve by the same methodology. Indeed, natural sexual mechanisms were always used to cross closely related sexually and genetically compatible organisms; the selection procedure consisted of isolating the most promi sing progenies. Obviously, by this way, plants could only share preexisting genetic pools. On the other hand, the last decade has seen drastic modifi cations of the experimental plant sciences, with the appearance of new technological possibilities. Because of this profound reshaping of our experimental ap proaches, other means can now be realistically envisaged in order to achieve similar or even higher goals. It is, for instance, possible to attempt completing sexual crosses (where both male and female gametes bring together the genetic informations necessary for growth and development of the offspring) by parasexual means by which novel genetic informa tions could possibly be added to the heritage -. At the limit, such genetic manipulations could enable man to create plants capable of producing new substances characteris tic of unrelated plants or, more generally, of other living or ganisms. Under the auspices of this Commission conferences covering these subjects were held in Hamilton, Ontario (12-16 September, 1960), in Vienna (15-19 July 1963) and in Winnipeg (28 August-1 September 1967). After the last of these conferences the Commission felt that the position regarding nuclear masses was reasonably good and that as a consequence the fundamental constants should get more emphasis in future conferences. For this reason they were very pleased to accept an offer from the National Physical Laboratory to accept the main burden of organizing the Fourth International Conference on Atomic Masses and Fundamental Constants. It is the outgrowth of an international workshop on 'Quantitative Measures of Dynamical Complexit…y and Chaos' held at Bryn Mawr College, June 22-24, 1989. The workshop was co-sponsored by the Naval Air Development Center in Warminster, PA and by the NATO Scientific Affairs Programme through its special program on Chaos and Complexity. Meetings on this subject have occurred regularly since the NATO workshop held in June 1983 at Haverford College only two kilometers distant from the site of this latest in the series. At that first meeting, organized by J. Gollub and H. Swinney, quantitative tests for nonlinear dynamics and chaotic behavior were debated and promoted [1). In the six years since, the methods for dimension, entropy and Lyapunov exponent calculations have been applied in many disciplines and the procedures have been refined. Since then it has been necessary to demonstrate quantitatively that a signal is chaotic rather than it being acceptable to observe that 'it looks chaotic'. Other related meetings have included the Pecos River Ranch meeting in September 1985 of G. Mayer Kress [2) and the reflective and forward looking gathering near Jerusalem organized by M. Finsen recognized that people with tuberculosis who lived in Norway and who had very little exposure to sunlight often developed facial lesions (lupus vulgaris) which would decrease and sometimes disappear during the summer months. This very observant physician reasoned that artificial light ought to produce the same effect as sunlight and began utilizing the radiation from the newly available carbon arc. At first, he used a glass lens to concentrate the radiation, but since this produced considerable burning, he replaced this with a hollow glass lens filled with water. However, while this reduced the heat burns, it did not actually duplicate the effect of direct sunlight. Finally, using a hollow lens filled with water but equipped with quartz windows, Finsen was able to imitate, even improve upon, the effect of sunlight. As a result, lupus vulgaris was practically eliminated from the Scandinavian countries. 688 pp. Englisch.

The Institute was made possible through funding by the North Atlantic… Treaty Organization (who sup plied the major portion of the financial aid), the National Research and Engineering Council of Canada, and Simon Fraser University. The availability of the Banff Centre was made possible through the co sponsorship (with NATO) of the ASI by the Canadian Association of Physicists. 12 invited lecturers and 82 other participants attended the Institute. Except for two lectures on nonlinear waves by Norman Zabusky, which were omitted because it was felt that they already had been exhaustively treated in the available literature, this volume contains the entire text of the invited lectures. In addition, short reports on some of the contributed talks have also been included. The rationale for the ASI and this resulting volume was that many of the hardest problems and most interesting phenomena being studied by scientists today ar.e nonlinear in nature.
