There are, however, no studies or case reports and only several articles published on the anesthetic considerations for a person with AIDS or in pain with AIDS. There is no literature on the pain management of AIDS patients. Writing on this subject must be considered trailblazing. The reason anesthesiologists should know about AIDS has rapidly extended from concern over transmission of infection to anesthetic and analgesic considerations. The anesthesiologist may also be part of a pain management team on either an acute or a chronic pain service. The requirement may be to treat an HIV -positive or AIDS patient acutely postoperatively or in consult to a psychiatric, medical, or surgical service. In a pain clinic setting, the anesthesiologist may be concerned with diagnosis, treatment, or referral for other multidisciplinary consultation. The earlier question of central nervous system involvement in AIDS is now moot, rapidly replaced with the knowledge that the eNS, if not primarily infected, is so shortly thereafter. Protected by the blood-brain barrier, the eNS becomes both a sanctuary and reservoir for HIV. Because neurologic complications of HIV are common, and since knowledge of the nervous system is essential for anesthetic and pain management, it is important to review HIV infection of the nervous system.

I started out believing that it would be enlightening to have a group of acknowledged rational-emotive therapy (RET) expert practitioners with well-established literary credentials write about how they approach the problem of modifying dient irrationality. Many RET practitioners of all levels of experience are, on the one hand, enamored of the economy, the precision, and the accuracy of psychological insight that RET theory offers, but they are, on the other hand, equally frustrated by their own inability to 'persuade' or otherwise change some of the dients they work with more quickly or even at all. Indeed, dients themselves frequently express the view that RET is illuminating, yet they find themselves at the same time puzzled and perplexed by their inability to make the substantial changes that RET invites. Yet DEDS is a relatively new phenomenon in dynamic systems studies. From the days of Galileo to Newton to quantum mechanics and cosmology of the present, dynamic systems in nature are primarily differential equations based and time driven. A large literature and endless success stories have been built up on such Continuous Variable Dynamic Systems (CVDS). It is, however, equally clear that DEDS are fundamentally different from CVDS. They are event driven, asynchronous, mostly man-made and only became significant during the past generation. Increasingly, however, it can be argued that in the modem world our lives are being impacted by and dependent upon the efficient operations of such DEDS. Yet compared to the successful paradigm of differential equations for CVDS the mathematical modelling of DEDS is in its infancy. Nor are there as many successful and established techniques for their analysis and synthesis. The purpose of this series is to promote the study and understanding of the modelling, analysis, control, and management of DEDS. CRYO-90, held on the campus of the State University of New York, Binghamton, New York, was an unusual interdisciplinary event, drawing from the life sciences as well as the physical science and engineering areas of the low temperature community. Co-sponsoring CRYO-90 with CSA were the Society for Cryobiology and the Symposium on Invertebrate and Plant Cold Hardiness. These latter two organizations brought an exciting developing field to the conference, a field whose exploration will lead to the betterment of all mankind through improved cryosurgical and organ preservation techniques in addition to improved agricultural and herd yields under extreme conditions. Specific goals of the cryobiological community are cryopreservation, the arrest and recovery of living processes of cells, tissues and organs; and cryosurgery - the local cryodestruction of diseased cells while preserving the healthy surrounding tissue. These goals present great technological challenges.
