Buch. Condizione: Neu. Neuware - This is the 11th of the Pediatric Nephrology series created to help us be in touch with developments which are relevant to the problems we face daily in clinical practice and the questions we ask and try to answer in clinical and experimental research. Like volume IX, this one focuses on one of t…he subgroups to which we are committed--the neonates' special fluid and electrolyte requirements. This volume has more on blood pressure and renal function and looks at the hormonal regulators. There is greater depth about intoxications and nephrotic agents, congenital disorders and mineral metabolism. The exchanges were stimulating and the controversies were brought out without need of much of my usual prodding. At Julie Ingelfinger's suggestion, at the end of each panel discussion I have added a comment to highlight the main points as I see them. Otherwise, the format remains as in past editions: the papers given related to the four major topic areas, each followed by panel and registrant discussion. Although the transcription is almost verbatim, you will not find the names of the discussants, purposely omitted to ease my editorial work and to encourage everyone to speak candidly. Some of the questions and answers are those submitted to the panelists after the sessions, incorporated here by request. Also, frequent references are made to others' work but their names have been omitted.

Taschenbuch. Condizione: Neu. This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -Mammalian sociobiology is a rapidly advancing field which has made enormous strides in the last ten years. The last major monograph on the subject (Ewer, 1968) was published sixteen years ago, and there is a need for this informati…on to be examined in terms of modern sociobiological theory. My approach throughout is evolutionary and is therefore directed strongly towards research which throws light on the ways in which mammals behave in their natural environments. I have tried to cover as wide a range of mammalian species as possible, although, in some cases, the only data available were obtained from captive individuals. The coverage of this book is not a reflection of the volume of literature published on different species, as I have tried to avoid undue emphasis on the social behaviour of primates and laboratory rodents. I have made scrupulous efforts throughout to avoid an anthropomorphic approach to mammalian behaviour. Terms such as 'strategy', 'evaluation' or 'choice' do not therefore imply conscious planning, but are used neutrally in the way in which they would be applied to a chess-playing computer. In the case of mammals, the programmer was natural selection. While I am fully aware that human beings are mammals, any detailed consideration of human social behaviour lies outside the scope of this book. However, the book may provide a complementary text to those interested in that subject. 260 pp. Englisch.

Buch. Condizione: Neu. This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -viii The experimental research presented at the conference and reported here deals mainly with the visible wavelength region and slight extensions to either side (roughly from 150 nrn to 1000 nrn, 8. 3 eV to 1. 2 eV). A single exception w…as that dealing with a description of spin-resolved photoelectron spectroscopy at energies up to 40 eV (31 nm). This work was done using circularly polarized radiation emitted above and below the plane of the circulating electrons in a synchrotron ring. The device at BESSY (West Germany) in which the experiments were carried out seems to be the only one presently capable of providing circularly polarized radiation in the X--ray through vacuum ultraviolet energy range. A much more intense source is needed in this range. A possible solution was proposed which could provide not only circularly polarized photons over a wide energy range, but could in principle modulate the polarization of the beam between two orthogonal polarization states. Realization of this device, or an equivalent one, would be a vital step towards the goal of determining all components of the Mueller matrix for each spectroscopic experiment. A variety of theoretical treatments are presented describing the different phenomena emerging from the interaction of matter and polarized radiation in a wide range of energies. From this work we expect to learn what are the most useful wavelength regions and what types of samples are the most suitable for study. 212 pp. Englisch.

Buch. Condizione: Neu. This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -The Speech Situation is a term worn with age in the teaching of public speaking in America. That it is comprised of occasion, speaker, and topic is a gross oversimplification. It also includes challenge, anxiety, emotion, fear, responsibi…lity, faults of memory, and instants of pride. Out of the circumstances arise an increase in heart rate, a change in blood pressure, an abnormal pattern of breathing, a noticeable build up in perspiration, and an ongoing evaluation. For students this may be merely a grade or perhaps a series of evaluative remarks, possibly addressed both to the speaker and the other participants, the audience. It may entail a replaying of a record of the speech, indeed a videotape. Most important is the lasting impression that remains with all of the participants. What of the vocabulary of the speaker under the circumstances of the speech situation This speaker - in the major portions of this work we may say, 'this young man' - has spent time seeking an appropriate topic. He has outlined a composition around a central idea or thesis. He has marshaled evidence, details. He has framed an opening paragraph. He has been admonished not to give an essay, but to strive for audience contact, interpersonal communication. He makes his audible approach through his vocabulary and accompanying phonology. Under the tension, the speaker repeats; he adds meaningless vocalizations in periods that might logically be pauses. There are slips of the tongue. At worst, failing, he withdraws to await another day. 280 pp. Englisch.

Buch. Condizione: Neu. This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -One of the most frequent requests I receive from graduate students is for references on how to formulate a complex clinical case. Typically, after reading the recommended materials, the student returns to request more detailed accounts of… how clinicians 'think' about particular cases. The general lack of such materials in the behavior therapy Iiterature led to the formation of the present volume. Throughout much of the behavior therapy literature, one gets the impression that most cases seen present circumscribed and straight fmward psychological problems. In my experience, such cases are rare. Accordingly, the present volume was designed to cover more complex problemssuch as sociopathy and paranoid personality. Thesedisorders are rarely discussed in the behavior therapy Iiterature but nonetheless seem to appear regularly in clinical settings. The cases presented in this book are descriptions of patients seen clinically by the editor or by the contributors. Work an this text began while I was a faculty member at Vanderbilt University and took several years to complete. As the contributors would attest, the task I set out for them was atypical and often difficult. The complexities involved in articulating how one conceptualizes a case are numerous and may help to explain why there are so few sources available on case formulation. The fact that our current state of knowl edge in psychopathology is rather limited further exacerbates the problem. 342 pp. Englisch.

Buch. Condizione: Neu. This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -Although adenoviruses have been established for quite some time as one of the most pliable tools to study the molecular biology of mammalian cells, rapid progress continues to be made with this virus system. The adenoviral genome introduc…ed into the nucleus of cells as a Trojan Horse, as it were, is now facili tating investigators to uncover details of cellular mechanisms. In this volume twelve chapters have been collected that summarize important current research on different mechanisms in adenovirus infected and -transformed cells. It has become increasingly apparent that some of these mechanisms do not only pertain to highly specialized strategies of the viral genome and its expres sion or replication, but may simultaneously shed light on events indigenous to the cell. 'Adenovirus DNA: The Viral Genome and its Expression' high lights the first publication of the entire annotated sequence of 35. 937 nucleotide pairs of adenovirus type 2 DNA by the Cold Spring Harbor and Uppsala groups (chapter 1). Goran Akusjarvi, Ulf Pettersson (Uppsala University) and Rich Roberts (Cold Spring Harbor) present a survey on the structure and function of the adenovirus-2 genome (chapter 2). A considerable amount of in formation has been collected on the biochemical mechanisms in vol ved in adenov irus DNA repl ication in human cells. Al though highly specialized in the way of initiating DNA replication, adenov irus DNA repl ication represents probably one of the best studied systems in work on eukaryotic DNA replication. 476 pp. Englisch.
