The book analyzes the strategies for urban development in Leipzig, Germany, and shows how civic leaders were able to harmonize planning and equity. They relied heavily on two interesting approaches in that process: the promotion of culture as a key component of urban development and the reconciliation of the inevitable process of gentrification with social equity. The book also looks at the globalization aspect of urban development, reviews research in social equity in urban development in Europe and the United States and describes sustainability as an important element of urban renaissance.

Until recently all existing algorithms for solving invers…e scattering problems were based on using either a weak scattering assumption or on the use of nonlinear optimization techniques. The limitations of these methods have led in recent years to an alternative approach to the inverse scattering problem which avoids the incorrect model assumptions inherent in the use of weak scattering approximations as well as the strong a priori information needed in order to implement nonlinear optimization techniques. These new methods come under the general title of qualitative methods in inverse scattering theory and seek to determine an approximation to the shape of the scattering object as well as estimates on its material properties without making any weak scattering assumption and using essentially no a priori information on the nature of the scattering object. This book is designed to be an introduction to this new approach in inverse scattering theory focusing on the use of sampling methods and transmission eigenvalues. In order to aid the reader coming from a discipline outside of mathematics we have included background material on functional analysis, Sobolev spaces, the theory of ill posed problems and certain topics in in the theory of entire functions of a complex variable. This book is an updated and expanded version of an earlier book by the authors published by Springer titled Qualitative Methods in Inverse Scattering Theory Review of Qualitative Methods in Inverse Scattering Theory All in all, the authors do exceptionally well in combining such a wide variety of mathematical material and in presenting it in a well-organized and easy-to-follow fashion. This text certainly complements the growing body of work in inverse scattering and should well suit both new researchers to the field as well as those who could benefit from such a nice codified collection of profitable results combined in one bound volume. Research subject and objectives This study focuses on an economic institution, the large industrial holding company, which continues to hold a prominent if not a strategic position in the resource allocation process in many indu…strialised market economies. Powerful multicompany combines like the famous Japanese zaibatsu and the less familiar but equally powerful European industrial groups rely on the institution of the holding company to tie their intermarket control network together. Two general questions arise from this situation: first, what factors account for the viability and growth within a market setting of those institutions which internalise allocation decisions and, second, what effect do such institutions have on resource allocation These questions provide the framework in which the proper research subject can be most adequately introduced. Before doing so, it is crucial to point out that the holding company institution, as analyzed in subsequent chapters, should not be confounded with the legal constructs, bearing the same generic name and flourishing in fiscal paradises, whose sole function is to organise tax evasion across national boundaries. The institution, as studied here, is the large holding company through which industrial groups manage multicompany systems. Such multicompany systems, operating an intermarket network by means of holding companies, continue to be more typical for Europe and Japan than for the United States where, for legal reasons, but also because of managerial efficiency, the multicompany system built around the holding company institution was rather short-lived and 1 the giant integrated multiunit enterprise rose to dominance instead. 160 pp. Englisch.

During the past few years, however, a rather subtle blending has occur red of representatives from industrial laboratories, universities, and manu facturers of x-ray equipment. Papers which deal with the fundamental as pects of some phase of x-ray research and which, in many cases, have no end or ultimate objective, are as eagerly received by the conferees as are papers which deal with a specific problem of immediate importance or a paper in which the la test equipment available is portrayed. Here 'analysis' means the construction of images of objects and the measurement of their physical characteristics by recording and measur… ing the wavefronts scattered by these objects. The 'synthesis' is the reconstruc tion of a wavefront of an object which is specified numerically. Problems involving the analysis and synthesis of wave fronts arise frequently in modem science and engineering. These are the problems encountered in the use of electromagnetic and sound waves to peer into the interior of various objects, the problems of the visual display of information in general, and the problems of measuring the characteristics of radiating systems, devising optical apparatus for signal processing, and developing hybrid electrooptic computer systems. Solutions are being sought for these problems through research in holography. The use of digital computers to analyze and synthesize wavefronts is an alternative to the analog methods, which include the methods of physical holography. The digital approach potentially has the advantages which are inherent in the digital technique for signal processing: the processing is highly accurate and absolutely reproducible; the characteristics of the processing or the processing algorithm itself can be changed in a simple way; complicated nonlinear and logic conversions can be carried out; the results are accessible; and it is easy to modify the process at any stage. In the fifties and early sixties, there was an upsurge of interest i…n ferroelectricity, piezoelectrici ty' and pyroelectricity. The classical physics of dielectrics, rep resented by books of H. Frohlich, C. P. Smyth, G. I. Skanavi, and A. von Hippel, is now unthinkable without ferroelectricity. The structure and properties of ferroelectrics have been described in a number of books and reviews, including those of W. Kanzig, H. D. Megaw, F. Jona and G. Shirane, W. J. Merz and E. Fatuzzo. The present work deals with the physics of crystalline di electrics and is based on the investigations carried out by scien tists throughout the world. But, understandably, the emphasis is on the research done in the USSR, particularly in the author's labo ratory. A special feature of this two-volume treatise is the pro minent place given to the symmetry and structure of dielectrics and to the importance of spontaneous electric polarization in many properties of crystals. In fact, these aspects take up the whole of the first volume. The second volume is concerned mainly with various properties and phenomena whose nature is illustrated by considering specific crystals. Thus, for example, the phenomena of polarization, piezoelectricity, electrostriction, etc. , are first discussed in detail. It soon became an authorita tive text on the problems of the biliary t…ract and, for instance, the discussion on the biliary secretion of organic anions, organic cations and inorganic ions were classic references. The worn pages of the volume in many libraries, including my own, bespeak its usefulness over ten long years. The initiative and energy of the Director of the first Institute have to be admired, even more so since he was able to assemble a Second Institute in Aalborg, Denmark, in 1975. His wisdom is reflected in the selection of the subjects discussed. The comparison between the two volumes tells something about the advancement in the time interval in knowledge about liver and biliary tract diseases, about the turnover of researchers interested in the liver and its diseases, and also about the present philosophy in biologic science. For this com parison, this volume is particularly suited because, in contrast to many other recent conferences, the more leisurely pace of the NATO Institutes permits more comprehensive but still scholarly reviews of the problems. The foreword of the first volume, written by my colleague, the late Harry Sobotka, expresses his, now dated, astonishment about the progress of knowledge of biology of the bile, so much less accessible to study than urine. 676 pp. Englisch.

This Symposium was sponsored by the New England Nuclear Corporation and the Technical Measurement Corporation,…and was devoted to principles, techniques, and applications of the Mossbauer effect. The Symposium was held at the Sheraton-Atlantic Hotel in New York City on january 26, 1965. Dr. Stanley Ruby, of Argonne National Laboratory, was Chairman of the aU-day session. About 250 people attended the Symposium, and interest appeared sufficient to warrant continuation of this Symposium series. It is hoped that future Symposia can be organized which will serve as a forum for presentation of advances in methodology. The papers presented in this volume review the current status of applications, describe instrument systems used, elu cidate measurement techniques applied, and formulate means of creating required environments for use in Mossbauer effect studies. With the proliferation of applications of the Mos sbauer effect in physics, as well as in chemistry and biology, the need for complete description of transducer systems, detection and data handling methods, and environment modification techniques be came apparent. The body of such experience, developed and possessed by a relatively small group of physicists, primarily, has not been readily accessible to those in other fields. This meeting was organized by the International School of Atomic and Molec…ular Spectroscopy of the 'Ettore Majorana' Centre for Scientific Culture. The objective of the Institute was to formulate a comprehensive treatment of the various processes by which molecules and crystals in excited electronic levels relax nonradiatively to the ground level. A total of 83 participants came from 62 laboratories and 22 nations (Australia, Belgium, Brasil, Canada, Czechoslovakia, France, F. R. Germany, Greece, Hungary, India, Ireland, Israel, Italy, Mexico, The Netherlands, Poland, Portugal, Switzerland, Turkey, United Kingdom, United States, and U.S.S.R.). The secretaries of the Institute were: Velda Goldberg for the scientific aspects and Antonino La Francesca for the administrative aspects of the meeting. Eleven series of lectures for a total of 36 hours were given. Nine 'long' seminars and 7 'short' seminars were also presented.
