The book appeared to fill a gap in the existing child literature and was quite well received. A similar gap appears to exist in the behavioral literature for… adult cases, in that there are very few adult case books currently available. The present book was developed in order to devote an entire casebook to both standard and more innovative clinical applications of behavioral treatments to adult problems. The book, containing 19 chapters, is divided into two parts. In the first part, in a chapter entitled Clinical Considerations, we discuss a variety of clinical issues that are of importance to designing and executing behaviorally based interventions with adults. The bulk of the book, the remaining 18 chap ters, contains a variety of cases presented by our experts. Each of the treatment cases is presented using the same format in order to increase consistency and comparability across chapters. Specific sections for each chapter are as follows: (1) Description of the Disorder, (2) Case Identification, (3) Presenting Complaints, (4) History, (5) Assessment, (6) Se lection of Treatment, (7) Course of Treatment, (8) Termination, (9) Follow-up, and (10) Overall Evaluation. Conversa tions with other cardi…ologists at our own institution and at other medical centers around the country convinced us that many of our colleagues shared our uncertainty about the details of surgical procedures and the factors that determine decisions in the perioperative period. As surgical techniques continue to evolve, this knowledge gap can become only more severe. We therefore compiled information about cardiac surgery that might be useful for cardiologists and other nonsurgeons. We asked cardiologists what questions they would like to ask their surgical colleagues and provided these questions to the authors of the chapters. Thus, the goal of these chapters is to help nonsurgeons answer their own questions about common cardiac procedures, and to help prepare these physicians to address the questions raised by their patients. A very clear account in the spirit of modern 'scale-space theory' is presented by Boscovitz (in 1758), with wide ranging applications to mathemat ics, physics and geography. Early applications occur in the cartographic problem of 'generalization', the central idea being that a map in order to be useful has to be a 'generalized' (coarse grained) representation of the actual terrain (Miller and Voskuil 1964). Broadening the scope asks for progressive summarizing. Very much the same problem occurs in the (realistic) artistic rendering of scenes. Indeed, materials scientists have devoted their efforts to creating new materials with improved electronic, magne…tic, thermal, mechanical, and optical properties. Often unnoticed, these new materials are rapidly invading our homes and automobiles, and may be found in our utensils, electronic equipment, textiles, home appliances, and electric motors. Even though they may go unnoticed, these new materials have either improved the efficiency and lifetime of these items or have reduced their weight or cost. In particular, magnetically ordered materials are useful in various applications, such as motors, magnetic imaging, magnetic recording, and magnetic levitation. Hence, much effort has been devoted to the development of better hard magnetic materials, magnetic thin films, and molecular magnets. During the same period of time, Mossbauer-effect spectroscopy has grown from a laboratory curiosity to a mature spectroscopic technique, a technique that probes solid-state materials at specific atomic sites and yields microscopic information on the magnetic and electronic properties of these materials. Iron-57 is the most commonly and easily used Mossbauer-effect isotope and, of course, is particularly relevant for the study of magnetic materials. Various applications of Mossbauer spectroscopy to magnetic materials are discussed in the first six chapters of this volume. Other isotopes such as zinc-67 and gadolinium-ISS have recently been used to study the electronic properties of zinc compounds and the electronic and magnetic properties of rare-earth transition metal compounds. 500 pp. Englisch.

Neutron capture therapy (NCT) is the binary system that has been the subject of the Fifth International Symposium on Neutron Capture Therapy, which was held September13-17, 1992, in Columbus, Ohio, undertheauspicesoftheInternational Society for Neutron Capture Therapy. Its objective was to bring together researchers from throughout the world and to provide a forum at which they could present the latest advances in the development of Neutron capture therapy. Neutron capture therapy has largely, but not exclusively, focused on the use of boron-10 as the target nuclide. Boron neutron capture therapy (BNCT) is based on the nuclear reaction that occurs when the stable isotope, boron-10, absorbs low-energy non ionizing thermal neutrons to yield alphaparticles and recoiling lithium-7 nuclei. The size and energy of these high linear energy transfer (LET) particles result in their being confined largely to the cells in which the capture reaction occurs. For BNCT to be successful, a sufficient numberof I~atoms mustbe localized within neoplastic cells, and enough thermal neutrons must be delivered and absorbed by the I~ to produce a lethal 1~(n,QVLi reaction.
