The book explores a new internal market structure for these service organizations and the implications this presents for managers and scholars in the 21st century workplace. By adopting an internal market perspective, the book develops new organizational forms outside the traditional hierarchical paradigm, which is ill-suited for the emerging knowledge workplace, in order to effectively manage emerging knowledge services. The indispensable role of customer/client in the operations of these organizations is examined, as is the creation of the 'Proventure Workplace', a work environment which accentuates jobs requiring rich cognitive skills for continuing innovation and creativity. 200 pp. Englisch.

Taschenbuch. Condizione: Neu. This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -This volume contains the Proceedings of the NATO Advanced Research Workshop on 'Growth and Optical Properties of Wide Gap II-VI Low Dimensional Semiconductors', held from 2 - 6 August 1988 in Regensburg, Federal Republic of Germany…, under the auspices of the NATO International Scientific Exchange Programme. Semiconducting compounds formed by combining an element from column II of the periodic table with an element from column VI (so called II-VI Semiconductors) have long promised many optoelectronic devices operating in the visible region of the spectrum. However, these materials have encountered numerous problems including: large number of defects and difficulties in obtaining p- and n-type doping. Advances in new methods of material preparation may hold the key to unlocking the unfulfilled promises. During the workshop a full session was taken up covering the prospects for wide-gap II-VI Semiconductor devices, particularly light emitting ones. The growth of bulk materials was reviewed with the view of considering II-VI substrates for the novel epitaxial techniques such as MOCVD, MBE, ALE, MOMBE and ALE-MBE. The controlled introduction of impurities during non-equilibrium growth to provide control of the doping type and conductivity was emphasized. 364 pp. Englisch.

Taschenbuch. Condizione: Neu. This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -This book is for the most part made up of the invited papers presented at the International Conference on Applica tions of the Kdssbauer effect, held at Aye1eth Hashahar, Israel, in August 1972. The purpose of the conference was to… review perspec tives in MHssbauer spectroscopy from the point of view of applications in various fields of science - mainly physics, chemistry, and biology. It was hoped that the bringing together of scientists who work in different disciplines but use a common tool would encourage interdisciplinary re search and widen the horizon of the individual researcher. Both these features have been an important and unique characteristic of Kdssbauer research in the past decade. Accordingly, the main papers were presented in the following areas: magnetic properties of solids, applications to in organic chemistry, biochemical studies, amorphous systems, metal alloys, advances in high-resolution studies, and the new techniques for studying recoil-free spectra from isolated atoms in inert materials. A special panel discussion was devoted to the subject of phase transitions. Recent years have witnessed a rapid growth in the use of X-ray photoelec tron spectroscopy for the study of the physics and chemistry of solids. A report on this area of research and its rela tion to Kdssbauer studies has been included. 268 pp. Englisch.

Taschenbuch. Condizione: Neu. This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -The ground-state of molecular oxygen, O , is essential to many 2 indispensible metabolic processes of all aerobic life forms ranging from prokaryotes, protists, plants, and fungi to animals. Research by mammalian toxicologists and…clinicians has unravelled persua sive evidence that O dependence imposes universal toxicity to all 2 aerobic life processes. The basis of this paradox is that one-electron reduction of O2 generates the superoxide anion free radical, 0;-, from numerous biological sources; for example, redox-active autoxidizable molecules such as catecholamines, oxidoreductases, and subcellular organelles such as mitochondria, endoplasmic reti'C ulum (microsomes), nuclei, and chloroplasts. Oxygen is also acti vated in biologically relevant photosensitizing reactions to highly re active singlet oxygen, 10 , 2 In all biological systems, 0;- undergoes further reduction to H 0 2 2 via Fenton reaction to the hydroxyl radical, OH. These, and some other forms of activated O , constitute reactive oxygen species (ROS) 2 and/or metabolites (ROM). Both 'OH and 10 are the most reactive 2 forms of ROS known and among their deleterious reactions are ox idation of proteins, DNA, steroidal compounds, and peroxidation of the cell membrane's unsaturated lipids to form unstable hydro peroxides. Their many breakdown products include malondialde hyde and hydroxynonenals that are themselves highly reactive and threaten cellular integrity and function. More importantly, they de compose to free radicals that can continue to propagate the vicious lipid peroxidation chain reaction. This is the so-called endogenous oxidative stress with which all aerobic organisms must cope. 480 pp. Englisch.

Taschenbuch. Condizione: Neu. This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -Alzheimer's disease, stroke and Parkinson's disease are the most prevalent brain diseases in the elderly. The psychiatric and behavioural consequences of these and other brain disorders contribute greatly to the decline in function… of these patients, often leading to greater suffering and a decreased quality of life, placement in institutions and increased stress on the family and other caregivers. The authors in this book discuss the psychiatric consequences of brain disease in the elderly with a particular focus on the management of these disorders. We have tried to keep the content of this book clinically relevant throughout by using a series of case examples and by emphasizing the various treatment strategies and forms of management available to the health care professional. In attempting to understand these disorders, it is important to place equal emphasis on biological, psychological and social factors. Because of the complexity and chronicity of these conditions, multidisciplinary intervention is crucial. We believe that this book will be helpful to all those working with the elderly, whether in the community or in the institution. This includes physicians, nurses, social workers, occupational therapists, psychologists and all those working with this patient population. 228 pp. Englisch.

Taschenbuch. Condizione: Neu. This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -During the last decade, the rapid growth of knowledge in the field of fluid mechanics and heat transfer has resulted in many significant ad vances of interest to students, engineers, and scientists. Accordingly, a course entitled '…Modern Developments in Fluid Mechanics and Heat Transfer' was given at the University of California to present significant recent theoretical and experimental work. The course consisted of seven parts: I-Introduction; II-Hydraulic Analogy for Gas Dynamics; 111- Turbulence and Unsteady Gas Dynamics; IV-Rarefied and Radiation Gas Dynamics; V-Biological Fluid Mechanics; VI-Hypersonic and Plasma Gas Dynamics; and VII-Heat Transfer in Hypersonic Flows. The material, presented by the undersigned as course instructor and by various guest lecturers, could easily be adapted by other universities for use as a text for a one-semester senior or graduate course on the subject. Due to the extensive notes developed during the University of California course, it was decided to publish the material in three volumes, of which the present is the first. The succeeding volumes will be entitled 'Selected Topics in Fluid and Bio-Fluid Mechanics' and 'Introduction to Steady and Unsteady Gas Dynamics.' Finally, I must express a word of appreciation to my wife Irene and to my children, Wellington Jr. and Victoria, who made it possible for me to write and edit this book in the very quiet atmosphere of our home. 404 pp. Englisch.

Taschenbuch. Condizione: Neu. This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -This volume contains the invited lectures presented in a symposium entitled 'Evolutionary strategies of parasitic insects and mites' at the national meeting of the Entomological Society of America in Minneapolis, Minnesota, 2-5 Dec…ember, 1974. The intent was to bring together biologists who have worked on arthropods that are either plant or animal parasites in order to foster consideration of general aspects of the parasitic way of life. There seems to be a deficiency of ecological and evolutionary concepts relating to parasitism, in contrast to the burgeoning literature on predation, and it appeared that an amalgamation of studies on plant and animal parasites might help development of some generalities. Since parasities are far more numerous than predators in the world fauna, or in any particular community, emphasis on their study is justified. I freely admit that para sitoids have been usefully regarded as predators by ecologists, and many concepts on predation have been derived from their study. Also, in whichever category one places the parasitoids, that is the one which contains the most species. However, from an evolu tionary point of view they show many characteristics that must be regarded as those of a parasite. Notably, they are small, highly specific to their host, highly coevolved with it, as a result many species can coexist, and their adaptive radiation has produced the majority of the species diversity seen on Earth today. 240 pp. Englisch.

Taschenbuch. Condizione: Neu. This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -The history of so-called storage diseases goes back to the end of the 19th and to the beginning of the 20th century when Fabry, Tay, Sachs, Gaucher, Niemann, Hunter, and Hurler first described the disorders which up to now are call…ed by their eponym. The clinical descriptions soon were followed by pathologic studies, and within a short time ,the hereditary characters of these rare afflictions came to be recognized. Although sporadic reports during the early part of this century dealt with biochemical analysis of the 'stored' materials in these disorders, it was actually in the late 1930s that the abnormal deposits started to attract the increasing attention of chemists. S. H. Thannhauser brought the broad concept of lipidoses as a group of related disorders to the attention of the medical profession for the first time, and in 1939 Klenk observed that the brain of a patient with Tay-Sachs disease contained greatly increased amounts of a glycolipid for which he proposed the name 'ganglioside. ' 20 years has thrown new light on these afflic Work carried out in the past tions and has pinpointed the enzymatic and lipid abnormalities associated with the various 'storage' diseases. Moreover, electron microscopic studies have permitted detailed investigations of the fine structure of the various organs of afflicted patients. 296 pp. Englisch.

Taschenbuch. Condizione: Neu. This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -The Sherrington School of Physiology at St. Thomas' Hospital provided a natural venue for four days of enthusiastic debate on Sherrington's Final Common Path -the alpha motoneurone and related matters; Sherrington himself held a le…cturership at St. Thomas' just over a century ago. The occasion was a happy one. Most participants already knew each other, the topics were familiar, the discussion was vigorous and critical but without personal rancor. The program had set out to encourage debate with 'critiques' both of the oral papers and the posters; their inclusion in the present volume helps to show where we are standing on rock rather than sand. In spite of a venerable history some surprisingly simple matters remain controversial, such as the information content of the signals from the Golgi tendon organs. To those working on alpha and gamma motoneurones and their control this volume provides an essential up-dating. Classical problems continue to be attacked on a broad front; advance is steady and continuous, a swelling tide rather than a sudden view of the summit. But in some sectors the difficulties are so great that to the outsider little might seem to change, the same battles continuing; but even here, the terms of debate change and concensus develops. Other branches of biology claim breakthrough upon breakthrough from the routine application of the new technologies, so we have to be the first to ask whether our classical approach to science can still be justified. 656 pp. Englisch.

This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -To anyone who worked long on the functional organization of living systems, it seems obvious that the central problems arise from a multi plicity of closed loops Simultaneously active in the control of every act. Severally, they ma…y be stable but, combined, they may crack up or break into schizogenetic oscillation. Whatever they are, linear or not, is beside the point, for in either case the same difficulty of analysis arises. Nor does it help our argument that we deal only with formal neurons or those having greater similitude to real ones. This limited Pitts and me, in 1943, to three theorems of Part III of our 'Logical Calculus of Idea Immanent in Nervous Activity. ' We still seek a transparent terminology in which to discern their properties. In the face of such difficulties it takes great courage to attempt a servo system analysis of the control mechanisms me diating any reflex if one would do this as a good engineer. Walt Whitman says of the 'Beginners,' 'How dear and dreadful they are to the earth - appearing at intervals - How all times mischoose their objects of adulation and reward - And how the same price must still be paid for the same great services!' Larry Stark is a beginner. His book must not be mistaken for phys iology - and there is nothing wrong with his physiology. 452 pp. Englisch.

This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -This book contains the lectures delivered at the NATO Advanced Study Institute on 'Physics and Applications of Quantum Wells and Superlattices', held in Erice, Italy, on April 21-May 1, 1987. This course was the fourth one of the I…nternational School of Solid-State Device Research, which is under the auspices of the Ettore Majorana Center for Scientific Culture. In the last ten years, we have seen an enormous increase in re search in the field of Semiconductor Heterostructures, as evidenced by the large percentage of papers presented in recent international conferences on semiconductor physics. Undoubtfully, this expansion has been made possible by dramatic advances in materials preparation, mostly by molecular beam epitaxy and organometallic chemical vapor deposition. The emphasis on epitaxial growth that was prevalent at the beginning of the decade (thus, the second course of the School, held in 1983, was devoted to Molecular Beam Epitaxy and Heterostructures) has given way to a strong interest in new physical phenomena and new material structures, and to practical applications that are already emerging from them. 468 pp. Englisch.

During this same period another development took place in psychiatry, namely, social and community psychiatry, interpreted by some, incorrectly, i…n my opinion, as the antitheses of the biological approach. The whole area of the delivery of mental health services, which quickly became more of a political and social issue than a medical one, led to confusion, disillusionment, despair, and also soul-searching by psychiatrists and other mental health professionals. The remarkable Pablo Picasso said, 'the development of photography freed the artist to express his own creativity. ' I have paraphrased Picasso's insightful remark, namely, 'the development of biology and social and community psychiatry should free the psychiatrist to express his own creati vity as a physician. ' It should allow him to regain his basic medi cal identity. As his medical identity becomes paramount, then the pejorative classification of psychiatrists into those 'organically oriented' and those 'dynamically-oriented' will no longer be valid. The psychiatrist, like his medical colleague, must be concerned with the psychological, psychosocial, biological, and technical aspects of psychiatry. The strengthening and development of the medical identity of the psychiatrist imposes increased responsibilities on him and on psychiatry as a medical discipline. On the one hand, he will have to become more of a neuro-bi_ gist and, on the other, more of a behavioral scientist. 292 pp. Englisch.

This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -The First International School on 'Electromagnetic Fields and Biomembranes' took place in Pleven, Bulgaria on 6-12 October 1986. It was designed as an advanced course through a collaboration of the Biological Faculty of Sofia Unive…rsity and the Council of the Bioelectrochemical Society. In an advanced course the lecturers are specialized in particular areas, and the students are usually specialists in related areas. We have captured the expertise of both groups of participants in this volume. The longer papers prepared by the lecturers are joined with the shorter papers based on the posters presented by the 'students' to provide a summary of the school as well as an indication of current research directions in the field. The course was designed to provide the latest information about biomembrane structure and function, covering the properties of both the lipid matrix and the recently characterized proteins that function as specialized channels and receptors. Real membranes and various models were covered, with an emphasis on understanding their mechanisms of interaction with various exogenous stimuli (e.g., electric, magnetic, light, etc.). Several practical applications of this information (e.g., electroporation, electro-fusion) were also presented with indications of the possibilities for new developments in biotechnology. The mixture of basic science with practical applications, together with the int~rmingling of lecturers and students from many different countries produced a stimulating atmosphere and effective teaching. We hope that this volume will transmit some of this atmosphere. 328 pp. Englisch.

Taschenbuch. Condizione: Neu. This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -This book is addressed to the university student who is not a science major and to the general reader. An attempt is made to present an integrated view of some of the basic concepts of physical, biological, and social sciences rele…vant to the problem of providing people with food. The application of these disciplines has led to our present technologies of medicine, agriculture, and food science on which modern civilization rests. Technical information concerning foods has increased enormously in the less than a century that the basic concepts of the science of nutrition have been recognized. Scientific agriculture to provide food for an ever-growing population is scarcely a century and a half old. Feeding oneself is a very personal matter, and at the same time feeding large groups is the concern of society as a whole. Therefore, it is understandable that, in one way or another, the problems offood produc tion and distribution underlie the actions of politicians, bureaucrats, the leaders of government, and business managers. These situations of our modern life make rational and sound solutions to food problems difficult and often contribute to alarmism founded on partial scientific 'truth' taken out of context. The trend toward more 'consumerism' is unmistakable. But to serve the individual best, such movements must be based on sound judgments and reasoned scientific principles rather than on the often emotional compromises of opportunistic politicians, lawyers, and businessmen. That man requires wholesome, nutritious food is indisputable. 440 pp. Englisch.

All of the contrib uting authors have eagerly submitted their original works as an expression of their esteem and affection for this dedicated man, friend, husband, father, scientist and teacher. This book could have been made extremely voluminous and the Symposium could have gone on for days. However, the achievements of a man such as Jack Sauer do not have to be measured by the number of pages in a book nor the number of speakers at a meeting. A more meaningful measure is the sincerity and devotion with which these few pages were assembled. All of the contributions to these Proceedings are from invited speakers. Numbered among the contrib utors are some of Jack's ~ personal friends as well as numerous former students who are currently working in the field of polymer science and engineering. It will be apparent to all who know him that those included represent but a small portion of Jack's friends and students. Although a fairly exhaustive search was made before the invitations were sent the number of omissions is both extremely large and unavoidable. 372 pp. Englisch.

This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -My favourite literary critique comes from the little girl in James Thurber's The Darlings at the Top oj the Stairs: 'This book tells me more about penguins than I wanted to know'. My daughter Clio, who learned the alphabet by typin…g words for the first draft of this book, has similar sentiments about the present work, and she suggests that my next effort 'should be quite short, maybe four pages'. However, this is an epistemological work, in a very general sense. It deals not only with the 'facts' of evolutionary biology and its interpretive logic, but also considers intellectual progress and prejudice, soul-searching and gullibility, and heuristic induction and wishful thinking; which may be more about penguins than students accustomed to cut-and-dried assertions, and teachers who cut and dry, might want to know. Some of my penguins, progenitors of significant epistemological lines, have been detailed down to the last feather, including a number of birds that by conventional wisdom, 'nobody takes seriously'. Some are sketches copied from other naturalists; others are phantoms that cry out for an incarnation denieci by a combination of accident and time constraints. Students in my courses in comparative physiology and the history and philosophy of biology have been the main sounding boards for my ideas. Richard Ring has always listened with polite interest when I have expatiated. 416 pp. Englisch.

This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -Many associations between organisms, both intra-and interspecific, can be usefully regarded as 'producer/scrounger' (P/S) relationships. One or more individuals or species (scroungers) within the association in some way use the beh…avioural or physiological investment of others (pro ducers) to reduce their costs of obtaining a limited resource. Examples are legion: many parasites take up more or less permanent residence in or on a host individual and use the host's ingestive, digestive or circu latory processes to reduce their own feeding costs; pirate (ldepto parasitic) individuals or species exploit the foraging investment of 'host' individuals/species by stealing procured food; inter- and intraspecific brood parasites exploit the nest-building behaviour and parental care of other species/individuals; non-displaying 'satellite' males may usurp matings (ldeptogamy) from higher ranking males whose display effort has attracted females to a courtship gathering, and so on. Scroungers appear to reduce the costs of exploiting a resource by letting producers invest the necessary time and energy in foraging, building, incubating, displaying, defending, evolving anti-predator adaptations, etc. , and then usurping the results of their efforts. The utility of scrounging, however, is conditional on a number of factors including the availability of producers, the number of scroungers exploiting them, the cost of scrounging in terms of producer avoidance, defence and/or retaliation, the value of the limited resource and the scope for alternative strategies of resource exploitation. This book brings together theoretical and empirical studies of PIS relationships in a wide variety of contexts and species. 312 pp. Englisch.

This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -Differential psychology, or the psychology of individual differences as it is better known, is perhaps the single most important basic psychological science that underlies professional practice in psychology. The recent age of beha…viorism all but ignored individual differences, but in this decade the study has emerged from relative dormancy with a new vitality, fueled by new concepts, technologies, statistics, and new viewpoints on old ideas that are moving us forward. This work is intended to be a review of as well as a primer on many of these advances and new approaches to the study of individual differences. The venerable, interesting, and often controversial Eysenck opens the volume with a review of recent results and new techniques for unlocking the physiological basis of what is commonly understood to be intelligence. Eysenck and his students, in his London laboratory, have been fostering advances in this field for more than four decades. Their latest work could be the most exciting of Eysenck's illustrious, scholarly career. Eysenck's eye-opening, innovative work on the relationship between evoked potentials and performance on traditional psychometric measures, presented with a new slant, is certain to attract much attention in coming years. Eysenck and Barrett's chapter is followed by a closely related work by Arthur Jensen, who gives us a revitalizing look at the concepts of Sir Francis Galton, the founder of the psychology of individual differences. 496 pp. Englisch.

However, with the advent of computerized tomography in 1972 and the computerized white blood… cell differential count in 1974, enormous changes have suddenly occurred. Digital image pro cessing in biomedicine has now become the most active sector in the digital image processing field. Processing rates have reached the level of one trillion picture elements per year in the United States alone and are expected to be ten trillion per year in 1980. This enormous volume of activity has stimulated further re search in biomedical image processing in the last two years with the result that important inroads have been made in applications in radiology, oncology, and ophthalmology. It's true enough, as many suspect, that the big, well-known company has something of an edge over the smaller, lesser-known company com peting for any given government contract-psychologically, at least: The typical government executives, whether contracting officials or program managers, tend to have a bit more faith in the ability of the large company to carry out the program successfully. All things being equal, then, the big company is more likely to get the nod. However, because the large companies are well aware of that, many tend to become 'fat, dumb, and happy'-they try to coast or rest on their laurels. That is, they get careless about making a strong enough case for themselves in writing their proposals. And when they lose, often to smaller companies, they are both puzzled and outraged. They have for gotten that all government procurement is a competition-usually both technical and cost competition-and that the 'little guy' can win against the 'big guy,' if he tries hard enough. And especially if the bigger guy is a bit careless and does not put out his best effort. 308 pp. Englisch.

Taschenbuch. Condizione: Neu. This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -When the present symposium was first conceived, it was decided that more emphasis be given to contributions from biological laboratories than has typically appeared in previous bionics meetings. Accordingly, most of the invited spe…akers are biologists, in the broad sense of representing some area of the life sciences. Likewise, many of the submitted papers eventually chosen by the technical com mittee were from the life sCiences, rather than the physical sciences or mathe matics. In this way, it was hoped that a greater direct interest in the technological problems of bionics might be stimulated among biologists, upon whose work much of the success of bionics necessarily lies. Because of the wide interdisciplinary span of the papers, it was necessary to impose some artificial organization upon them, specifically for continuity in the transactions. We elected to put the biological papers first, followed by those which deal with reasonably specific models, and reserveto the last those papers reporting models which are more general in nature. The editorial function was kept to a minimum, with no major alterations of content and few of style being exercised. Several of the papers delivered at the symposium required a longer format for clarity and are included here in ex panded versions. Assitance in the preparation of this volume was received from the National Institute of Neurologic Diseases and Blindness, Grant number B-3896. 412 pp. Englisch.

Taschenbuch. Condizione: Neu. This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -This volume is devoted to the chemistry, immunology, molecular biology, and physiology of the human chorionic gonadotropin, heG. For this glycoprotein molecule the course from discovery to chemical deciphering covered about fifty y…ears. It was in 1928 that Ascheim and Zondek reported that urine from pregnant women contains something that stimulates the ovaries of mice or rats. This provided the basis for the famous A-Z test for pregnancy and for the 'rabbit test' modification introduced by Friedman. As researchers sought to find more sensitive responses to heG, they used a wide variety of species including the South African aquatic toad, Xenopus Zaevis, the terrestrial toad of South America, Bufo arinarus, and the African weaver finch, EupZeetes afra. The weaver finch feather reaction was particularly noteworthy, for it disclosed a non-gonadal response to heG/LH. In retrospect, this may have been an important evolutionary clue to the realization that the designation of the hormone as a 'gonadotropin' may have been only partially descriptive of the molecule's physiological function--a concept that is gaining attention, as the papers in this 1980 volume divulge. 520 pp. Englisch.

Taschenbuch. Condizione: Neu. This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -During the last few centuries, and particularly in recent decades, problems result ing from the excessive use of drugs and alcohol have spread virtually as an epidemic to every country in the world and to almost every community. Ab…use of alcohol and drugs is related to numerous other health problems, such as the spread of acquired immune deficiency syndrome (AIDS) on all continents. Health and social services today cannot afford to ignore this crisis since it affects all levels of society and manifests itself in diverse health and social problems. In recent years, the World Health Organization has received numerous requests for training material for physicians in this field. This manual therefore meets an urgent need. The availability of new data and the dearth of suitable textbooks have made its preparation mandatory. The influence of sociocultural factors on drug dependence and alcohol related problems-on their cause, development, and consequences as well as on their treatment and prevention-has been taken into account in the preparation of this manual in order to ensure that its usefulness is not limited to one country or region. It has been prepared primarily for the teaching of physicians and medical students, although much of it is relevant to the training of nurses, midwives, health educators, primary-care workers, medical social workers, counselors, and psychologists. In fact, suggestions have been included for adapting the manual for use in the training of such varied groups of students. 352 pp. Englisch.

Taschenbuch. Condizione: Neu. This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -This volume chronicles the proceedings of the Symposium on Particles on Surfaces: Detection, Adhesion and Removal held under the auspices of the Fine Particle Society in San Francisco, July 28-August 2, 1986. The study of particles… on surfaces is extremely important in many areas of human endeavor (ranging from microelectronics to optics to biomedical). A complete catalog of modern precision and sophisticated technologies where particles on surfaces are of cardinal importance will be prohibitively long, but the following eclectic examples should underscore the concern about particles on a variety of surfaces. In the semiconductor world of shrinking dimensions, particles which, a few years ago, were cosmetically undesirable but functionally innocuous can potentially be killer defects now. As the device sizes get smaller, there will be more and more concern about smaller and smaller particles. In the information storage technology, the gap between the head and the disk is very narrow, and if a particle is trapped in the gap that can have very grave consequences. The implications of particulate contamination on sensitive optical surfaces is all too manifest. So the particulate contamination on surfaces is undesirable from functional, yield and reliability points of view. This symposium was organized with the following objectives in mind: to bring together active practitioners in this field; to provide a forum for discussion of the latest research and development activities in this area; to provide opportunity for cross-pollination of ideas; and to highlight topics which needed intensified effort. 396 pp. Englisch.

Taschenbuch. Condizione: Neu. This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -Noncrystalline (NC) solids, as is well known, lack the long range order of crystals. Accordingly, they exhibit scattering, e.g., x-ray, electron, and neutron, but not the diffraction patterns characteristic of crystals. The intensi…ty distributions from NC solids are usually transformed into radial distribution functions (RDF), but the interpretation of the RDF's is not unique. The lack of long-range order, and the non-uniqueness of the structural interpretation, have constituted the main obstacles to the usual solid state physics approach which has been so successful in dealing with crystals. As a corrolary, questions of local order and structure have frequently been de-emphasized. This monograph contains a collection of chapters many of which emphasize local-structure and chemical bonding as opposed to long-range order. Most of the chapters were chosen from talks given at the international symposium, 'Structure and Bonding in Noncrystalline Solids,' held in Reston, Virginia in May of 1983. Other chapters, however, were simply submitted independently of the Reston conference. Thus, this book is not a proceedings of that conference, nor was it ever intended to be. The chapters presented here range from theory of bonding and structure, to structurally oriented measurements of various kinds, e.g., ESR, Raman, to more applied chapters. Our goal was to produce a monograph that enhances understanding of the structures of NC solids. 460 pp. Englisch.

Taschenbuch. Condizione: Neu. This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -There have been significant changes in the academic environment and in the workplace related to computing. Further changes are likely to take place. At Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, the manner in which the subject of heat trans…fer is presented is evolving so as to accommodate to and, indeed, to participate in, the changes. One obvious change has been the introduction of the electronic calcula tor. The typical engineering student can now evaluate logarithms, trigonomet ric functions, and hyperbolic functions accurately by pushing a button. Teaching techniques and text presentations designed to avoid evaluation of these functions or the need to look them up in tables with associated interpolation are no longer necessary. Similarly, students are increasingly proficient in the use of computers. At RPI, every engineering student takes two semesters of computing as a fresh man and is capable of applying the computer to problems he or she encoun ters. Every student is given personal time on the campus computer. In addition, students have access to personal computers. In some colleges, all engineering students are provided with personal computers, which can be applied to a variety of tasks. 440 pp. Englisch.

Taschenbuch. Condizione: Neu. This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -Considering the enormous progress achieved in some special areas of superconductivity during the last few years, it seemed worthwhile to discuss thoroughly a subject, which has encountered severe pro blems on the theoretical and th…e experimental side, namely the effects of the anisotropic electron and phonon properties of (single crystalline) materials on the characteristic features of the super conducting state. The fact that the majority of scientists actively engaged in this research field at present were brought together at the meeting, has led to an almost complete coverage of the pertinent topics in this volume. Six review papers discuss the development and the present state of theory and experiment concerning the anisotropies of the upper critical field and the magnetization as well as the flux line lattice and the superconducting energy gap. Furthermore, 18 papers present the most recent research on these properties and additional anisotropy effects associated with the intermediate state patterns or the specific heat. Concerning the magnetic properties, remarkable agreement between theory and experiment has been achieved; on the other hand, controversial views regarding the existence of anisotropy in the superconducting energy gap are presented. In both cases, how ever, theorists and experimentalists are still confronted with a number of open questions. It is the purpose of this book to draw the attention of scientists to these fascinating problems. Harald W. 324 pp. Englisch.

Taschenbuch. Condizione: Neu. This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -Major and exciting changes have taken place recently in various aspects of bio technology and its applications to forestry. Even more exciting is the prospect of major innovations that the entire field of biotechnology holds for pl…ant growth in general. The importance of these developments for the forestry sector is considerable, particu larly since forestry science has not received the kinds of technical and R&D inputs that, say, agriculture has received in the past few decades. Y ct the problems of defor estation as well as stagnation in yields and productivity of existing forests throughout the world are becoming increasingly apparent, with consequences and ecological ef fects that cause growing worldwide concern. Policies for application of existing knowl edge in biotechnology to the field of forestry and priorities for future research and development are, therefore, of considerable value, because it is only through the adop tion of the right priorities and enlightened policies that scientific developments will move along the right direction, leading to improvements in forestry practices through out the world. It was against this backdrop that the Tata Energy Research Institute (TERI) or ganised a major international workshop on the 'Applications of Biotechnology in For estry and Horticulture' at New Delhi in January 1988. The present volume covers the proceedings of this international workshop. 400 pp. Englisch.

Taschenbuch. Condizione: Neu. This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -The Second Hidden Peak Symposium on Computer-Enhanced Analytical Spectroscopy, held in June, 1988, at the Snowbird Resort (Salt Lake City, Utah), centered around twelve keynote lectures delivered by some of the foremost experts and… pioneers in this rapidly expanding field. The editor is highly indebted to each of these colleagues for contributing a chapter to the second volume of Computer-Enhanced Analytical Spec troscopy. The primary objective of this volume is to present a repre sentative cross-section of current activities in the field while balancing out the lighter coverage of some topics and areas in Volume 1. An exciting new topic, remote IR sensing, is covered in Chapters 4 and 5. Deconvolution and signal-processing methods have now been extended to UV/VIS (Chapter 1) and GC/MS (Chapter 3) applications. Furthermore, the development and testing of novel factor analysis techniques in the areas of UV /VIS and IR spectroscopy are discussed in Chapters 2 and 12, respectively. Fundamental aspects of library search techniques are presented in Chapters 7 (MS) and 9 (NMR). Chapters 6, 10, and 11 cover selected uses of expert systems in NMR, IR, and MS, respectively. Finally, an integrated expert system approach to the interpretation of GC/IR/MS data is outlined in Chapter 8. In an attempt to facilitate access to the various topics for the newcomer to the field, the twelve chapters have been organized into two main parts: Unsupervised Methods: Spectral Enhancement, Deconvolu tion, and Data Reduction, and Supervised Methods: Expert Systems, Modeling, and Quantitation. 340 pp. Englisch.
