The response to the survey provided a wide range of in-house directories. This book contains approximately 4,000 entries developed from over 300 documents. This book was written in the hope that it will help people communicate more easi1y--u1timately improving the quality of EIS decision making. I re alize the limitations of this initial edition and accept the challenge of providing a more effective reference tool in future editions.

For each environmental area, I review the major models and methods, comparing their assumptions, ease of use, and other characteristics. Practical examples illustrate the benefits and problems of using each model. Computer models are increasingly being used by planning and engineering professionals for locating and planning public works, and industrial, commercial, and residential projects, while evaluating their environmental impacts. The requirements of the National Environ mental Policy Act and related state laws as well as separate state and federal laws concerning air and water quality, stormwater runoff, land use, and hazardous waste disposal have made the use of these methods mandatory in many circumstances. Its purpose is to investigate how these perceptions are organized in the minds of different groups of American adults, to find valid and efficient ways of measuring these percep tion…s, to suggest ways these measurement methods could be implemented to yield a series of social indicators, and to provide some initial readings on these indicators; i.e., some information about the levels of well-being perceived by Americans. The findings are based on data from more than five thousand Americans and include results from four separate representative samplings of the American population. One of the ways our research is unusual is that it includes a major methodological component. Typical surveys involve a modest effort at instru ment development, the application of the instrument to a group of respondents, and an analysis of the resulting data that mainly describes the people studied. Our work, however, was implemented in a series of sequential cycles, each of which consisted of conceptual development, instrument design, data collection, analysis, and interpretation. Apparently, there is so much at stake, whenever we think about power or are involved, that it may be worth our while to keep the concept blurred. This is most clearly seen in social science. Power, inequality in power, struggle for power are a kind of prime movers in social life, but power problems have seldom been studied, compared to the research done on other subjects, such as satisfaction about personal achievement, perception, mental processes, achievement motivation, cultural differences, etc. Power appears to be under a taboo in society and most social scientists agree not to discuss it (ref. 23, pp. 55 and 56). Whatever research there has been reveals the peculiar trend of restricting itself to the study of power differences and power struggles as world- or macro-problems. Studies of mondial problems have covered rela tions between America and the Soviet Union, or between rich and poor countries. China has also been included of late. These diseases traditionally have been grouped together under the general term of cancer, without any scientific reason and irrespective of many differences existing between them. The word cancer, because it is synonymous with diseases that cause suffering and death, naturally generates fear in people throughout the world. Cancer fortunately has a changing face caused by the realization that these diseases are different diseases with variable etiology and prognosis; they need different kinds of treatment, and even prevention is a practical proposition. The time has therefore come to delete the term cancer from our terminol ogy as unscientific and unhelpful and to substitute oncological diseases governed by the system of knowledge designated oncology. This conforms also with the designations used for other groups of diseases. In the divisions of oncology an important place is held by surgical oncology because many oncological diseases require surgical treatment alone, or in combination with radiotherapy and chemotherapy. Combina tion therapy is being used effectively for an increasing number of these diseases, and this trend will become more pronounced as chemotherapy develops. Initially, the data base was stored on a car…d index, but this was subsequently transferred to punched cards and magnetic tape. Computer processing was adopted at an early stage to derive the three index formats from the data base. Over the subsequent years, several versions of the bibliography were produced, with two of these being made available in a report form to other researchers. From the widespread interest in these documents, it became evident that there was a need for a commercially-available comprehensive bibliography in this area. A major effort was undertaken to revise, update, and extend the data base, resulting in this present volume. The bibliography covers the period 1956-1975 primarily, although some earlier publications of histori cal interest are included. The citations are not restricted to the English language and documents are listed in many languages and from diverse places of origin. All publication formats were accepted, so that references will be found to books, monographs, journal papers and articles, theses, dissertations, reports, surveys, and the like. 696 pp. Englisch.

It has led to major revisions in concepts of cellular immunity and theories on th…e recovery of multicellular systems from viral infection. Since its discovery, interferon has held the interest of the molecular biologist, and definitive answers as to its clinical value are close at hand. The following treatise is an attempt by the authors to pre sent a complete picture of the many aspects of interferon. Having recently had the privilege of visiting the laboratories of the au thors and several others of our Soviet colleagues working in the interferon field, I was most impressed with the amount of research being done in this area. Since a great deal of this work is published in the Russian language, there is unfortunately a time lag until it can be received and translated. We are therefore most grateful to Drs. Solov'ev and Bektemirov for having produced this impres sive work which offers the opportunity to review the entire field and, very importantly, some of the work being done by our Soviet counterparts, and also to Plenum Publishing Corporation for pro viding the English translation. Because of the explosion of research into the anatomy, physiology, chemistry, and behavioral aspects of the hip pocampus, some means of synthesis of the results from these lines of research was called for. We first thought of a conference. In fact, officials in the National Institute of Mental Health suggested we organize such a conference on the hippocampus, but after a few tentative steps in this direction, interest at the federal level waned, probably due to the decreases in federal support for research in the basic health sciences so keenly felt in recent years. However, the editors also had come to the view that conferences are mainly valuable to the participants. The broad range of students (of all ages) of brain behavior relations do not profit from conference proceedings unless the proceedings are subsequently published. Furthermore, conferences dealing with the functional character of organ systems approached from many points of view are most successful after participants have become acquainted with each other's work. Therefore, we believe that a book is the best format for disseminating information, and that its publication can be the stimulus for many future conferences. 468 pp. Englisch.

Human remains unearthed in Lancashire, England, dating from ap proximately 900 AD, show clear evidence of the aftliction. However, it was not until… the 1800s that physicians rediscovered the condition, and a little more than 100 years ago that Sir James Paget published a perceptive and accurate description of the disease from the clinical and pathologic points of view. He felt the disease represented an inflammatory condition of the skeleton and hence named it osteitis deformans. The condition again lapsed into anonymity for several decades afterwards, and therapeutic approaches did not evolve until after World War II when several groups, located mainly in the Boston area, began using a variety of agents, includ ing corticosteroids for treatment of this condition. These early attempts at therapy were unsuccessful and the condition remained essentially untreat able until the development of the calcitonins and the bisphosphonates in the 1970s. In 1978, the Paget's Disease Foundation, a private nonprofit volun tary health agency, was founded to assist individuals aftlicted by Paget's disease of bone, to provide education regarding this condition to the medical community, and to encourage research efforts to better under stand and treat the condition. An international conference was organized under the aegis of the Paget's Disease Foundation and was held in New York City in October, 1989, ten years after the founding of the Paget's Disease Foundation. 336 pp. Englisch.

The Workshop has been motivated by important theoretical developments in transport equations whicll make it possible to relate microscopic descriptions of heavy ion collisions to nuclear matter theory and by the need to review the large body of data available on heavy ion collisions and discuss future experimental programs. This discussion was especially timely a few months before the new SIS/ESR Heavy Ion Fa.cility starts operating in Darmstadt. The School consisted mostly of series of lectures on nuclear matter, transport equations and the dynamics of heavy ion collisions. The data and their interpretation were exten sively discussed; the information carried by the various types of particles emitted during the collisions (photons, lepton pairs, pions, hons, nucleons, fragments) has been particu larlyemphasized. The origin of this meeting goes back to 1982 when the organizers met at the GANIL laborat…ory in Caen, France which had just started accelerating argon ions at 44 MeV per nucleon. We then realized that 1984 should be the appropriate time to review the first results obtained with such new kinds of facilities. The material contained in this volume, presenting many beautiful re sults on nuclei at high excitation, fully confirms this point. Many stimulating exchanges between experts in rather diffe rent fields already took place during the school and we hope that this cross fertilization will lead to further developments. About half of the present volume is also devoted to the field of relativistic heavy ion collisions, which is now expanding rapidly. As an illustration, let us recall that the construction of a 30 on 30 GeV per nucleon collider at Brookhaven has been recognized last year as one cf the major priorities by the US Nuclear Science Advisory Committee. However, it was through the tragic events of 1962, when dramatic increases in the incidence of phocomelia in newborn infants in Germany, the United Kingdom, Japan, and other countries were traced to the use of the apparently non-toxic sedative thalidomide by pregnant women, that toxicologists were brought face to face with the devastating possibility of chemically-induced developmental abnormalities. It had been shown earlier that chemotherapeutic agents could cause damage to the developing organism, but the absence of any known examples of drug-induced birth defects had produced an air of complacency which was reinforced by the lack of any specific regulatory requirements for safety evaluation in this area. The magnitude of the thalidomide tragedy, affecting some 10000 malformed children, was sufficient to cause an immediate, and some would say hasty, reaction by government drug regulatory agencies throughout the world to construct a test protocol which would detect potential teratogenic substances that might give rise to anatomical malformations. 352 pp. Englisch.

One possible approac…h that is described in this book is to make precise electrical measurements that may reveal those devices more likely to fail. The measurements assessed are of analog circuit parameters which, based on a knowledge of failure mechanisms, may indicate a future failure. . To incorporate these tests into the functional listing of very large scale integrated circuits consideration has to be given to the sensitivity of the tests where small numbers of devices may be defective in a complex circuit. In addition the tests ideally should require minimal extra test time. A range of tests has been evaluated and compared with simulation used to assess the sensitivity of the measurements. Other work in the field is fully referenced at the end of each chapter. The team at Lancaster responsible for this book wish to thank the Alvey directorate and SERe for the necessary support and encouragement to publish our results. As with much of moder…n chemistry, the growth in gas phase inorganic ion chemistry can be traced to the development of instrumentation and new experimental methods. Studies in this area require sophisticated instruments and sample introduc tion/ ionization methods, and often these processes are complicated by the need for state-selecting (or collisionally stabilizing) the reactive species in order to assign the chemistry unequivocally. At the present level of experimental development, a wide range of experiments on diverse ionic systems are possible and many detailed aspects of the chemistry can be studied. Gas Phase Inorganic Chemistry focuses on the reactions of metal ions and metal clusters, and on the study of these species using the available modern spectroscopic methods. Three of the twelve chapters cover the chemistry of ionic monometal transition metal ions and the chemistry of these species with small diatomics and model organics. Two of the chapters focus on the studies of the chemical and physical properties of (primarily) transition metal clusters, and these chapters review experimental methods and capabilities. The authors noted that such a high value of t…he phosphorylation coefficient suggests a fundamental difference in the mechanisms of A TP formation coupled with respiration, and glycolysis, since in the latter case, the amount of the ATP synthesized is equal to that of the substrate utilized. A lot of hypothetical schemes were put forward to explain the nature of coupling between electron transfer and phosphorylation, but none of them solved the problem. Only quite recently, one hypo thetical scheme of energy coupling, viz. Mitchell's chemiosmotic concept, 2.3 was supported by experimental data which allow us to prefer it to alternative possibilities. D. P. Burkitt, who has been in the forefront of this investigation,… has included among the 'diseases of civilization' hiatus hernia, ischemic heart disease, cholelithiasis, polyps of the colon, and cancer of the colon. All of these conditions appear to have the same geographic distribution. In these areas, the diets were characterized by increased amounts of fat and meat protein, and by an apparent deficit of fiber. It is noteworthy that while an increased intake of refined sugars also has been implicated in the Western diet, the consumption of sugar and other sweetners in the United States actually has remained fairly stable since about 1925 when the use of complex carbohydrates in the form of starchy foods began to decline. The mechanism whereby deficiency of fiber in the diet contributes to the development of colonic diverticula, presumably is by facilitating the development of segmentation of the colon and pockets of intracolonic high pressure zones associated with prolonged transit time of bowel content. Preliminary therapeutic observations, furthermore, have suggested that the addition of fiber in the form of bran to the diet may promote regularity of bowel function and perhaps lessen the likelihood that new diver ticula will be formed after the resection of involved colonic segments. 196 pp. Englisch.

Digital watches equipped with liquid-crys tal displays (LCD's) have recently made their debut in the electronic watch market, and the large-scale use of LCD's in a variety of other applications requiring reliable, low-power digital displays is immi nent. There is good reason to believe that liquid crystals will be the first electro-optic materials to find widespread commercial use. Apart from applications, liquid crystals are unique among the phases of matter. Lurking beneath their garish display of color and texture is a great complexity of physical and chemical interaction that is only now beginning to unfold in the face of a decade-old resurgence in all aspects of liquid~rystal research. RCA Laboratories has participated in this resurgence from its beginning in the early 1960's and at present maintains active liquid-crystal programs both in basic re search and in device engineering. In view of the widespread interest in liquid crystals at RCA Labo ratories, an in-house weekly seminar devoted to the subject of liquid crystals was organized in the fall of 1973. The principal role of microsomal cytochrome P-450 in the metabolic activation of various chemical carcinogens in animal cells has been well established. The activated chemical carcinogens induce mutations of the cells, which is an essential part of the initiation of chemical carcinogenesis. Since microsomal cytochrome P-450 in various animal tissues includes multiple molecular species with different substrate specificities and different responses to chemical inducers, knowledge of the molecular and catalytic properties and the inducibilities of those cytochrome P-450 forms is surely a most important base from which to elucidate the mechanism of chemical carcinogenesis. The focus of the symposium was this area of molecular diversity and inducibility of microsomal cytochrome P-450 in animal tissues. The mechanism of activation of various types of chemical carcinogens by cytochrome P-450 and related enzymes was another main topic. Quasielastic light…scattering (also called self-beating spectroscopy or intensity correlation spectroscopy) is the technique, introduced by Benedek and coworkers and by Cummins and coworkers about 15 years ago, by which dynamical information about a scattering medium is obtained through the measurement of the power spectrum (or the intensity correlation function) of the laser light scattered from the medium. The technique received in the early seventies a considerable impulse from the development of real-time fast digital correlators. The aim of the Workshop was to bring together a selected number of researchers in order to discuss recent developments in quasielastic light scattering and related optical methods and to report about new applications of the technique in physics, chemistry and biology. The first two days of the meeting were devoted to the oral presentations of papers.
