Taschenbuch. Condizione: Neu. This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -The successful early adaptations of man involve a complex interplay of biological and cultural factors. There is a rapidly growing number of paleontologists and paleoanthropologists who are concerned with hominid foraging and the evolution of hunting. New techniques of paleoanthropology and taphonomy, and new information on human remains are added to the traditional approaches to the study of past human hunting and other foraging behavior. There is also a resurgence of interest in the early peopling of the New World. The present book is the result of the Ninth Annual Spring Systematics 10, 1986, in the Symposium, on the Evolution of Human Hunting, held on May Field Museum of Natural History in Chicago. We are grateful to the NSF (grant no. BNS 8519960) for partial financial support in arranging the symposium. In preparation of this volume we have received assistance from many people, particularly the reviewers of individual chapters; it is impossible to name them all. We must however single out Drs. Richard G. Klein and Glen H. Cole for their encouragement at various stages of preparation of the symposium and this volume, and for being a help to the anthropological knowledge. Zbigniew Jastrzebski assisted with the figures and Paul K. Johnson diligently typed the camera-ready copy, and patiently coordinated the endless book-making chores. 476 pp. Englisch.…

Taschenbuch. Condizione: Neu. This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -In the writing of prefaces for works of this sort, most editors report being faced with similar challenges and have much in common in relating how these challenges are met. They acknowledge that their paramount ob jective is to provide more than an overview of topics but rather to offer selective critical reviews that will serve to advance theory and research in the particular area reviewed. The question of the appropriate audience to be addressed is usually answered by directing material to a potential audience of social scientists, graduate students, and, occasionally, ad vanced undergraduate students. Editors who are confronted with the problem of structuring their material often explore various means by which their social science discipline might be subdivided, then generally conclude that no particular classification strategy is superior. In elabo rating on the process by which the enterprise was initiated, editors typ ically resort to a panel of luminaries, who provide independent support for the idea and then offer both suggestions for topics and the authors who will write them. Editors usually concede that chapter topics and content do not reflect their original conception but are a compromise between their wishes and the authors' expertise and capabilities. Editors report that inevitable delays occur, authors drop out of projects and are replaced, and new topics are introduced. Finally, editors frequently con fess that the final product is incomplete, with gaps occurring because of failed commitments by authors or because authors could not be secured to write certain chapters. 396 pp. Englisch.…

Taschenbuch. Condizione: Neu. This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -The conference 'Laser Science and Technology' was held May 11-19, 1987 in Erice, Sicily. This was the 12th conference organized by the Internatio nal School of Quantum Electronics, under the auspices of the 'Ettore Majorana' Center for Scientific Culture. This volume contains both the in vited and contributed papers presented at the conference, covering current research work in two areas: new laser sources, and laser applications. The operation of the first laser by Dr. Theodore Maiman in 1960 initia ted a decade of scientific exploration of new laser sources. This was fol lowed by the decade of the 1970s, which was characterized by 'technology push' in which the discoveries of the 1960s were seeking practical applica tion. In the 1980s we are instead seeking 'applications pull,' in which the success and rapid maturing of laser applications provides both inspiration and financial resources to stimulate additional work both on laser sources and applications. The papers presented in these Proceedings attest to the great vitali ty of research in both these areas: New Laser Sources. The papers describe current developments in ultra violet excimer lasers, X-ray lasers, and free electron lasers. These new lasers share several characteristics: each is a potentially important coher ent source; each is at a relatively short wavelength (below 1 micrometer); and each is receiving significant development attention today. 468 pp. Englisch.…

Though each paper has been classified into one of these categories (for conference organization purpose), many papers overlapped two or three areas. It is also interesting to note that not only are scientific results being communicated, but the latest techniques and the state-of-the-art tools of the trade (existing and in development) are also being presented. The forty-six papers presented at this conference represent the work of seventy scientists working at universities, government laboratories, and industrial laboratories in seven different countries . Taschenbuch. Condizione: Neu. This item is printed on demand - Print on Demand Titel. Neuware -Guide to Successfully Applying the UML offers a tool-independent and process-independent roadmap for successfully applying the Unified Modeling Language (UML). The UML is a modeling language for specifying, visualizing, constructing, and documenting the artifacts of a system-intensive process. It was originally conceived by Rational Software Corporation and three of the most prominent methodologists in the information systems and technology industry: Grady Booch, James Rumbaugh, and Ivar Jacobson. The language has gained significant industry support from various organizations via the UML Partners Consortium and has been submitted to and approved by the Object Management Group as a standard. This book works in concordance with references to offer a suite of practical real-world examples to help novice and expert users of the UML to understand the whole language (holistically and cohesively), including rules of usage and principles of composition, style guidelines, and a roadmap for successfully applying the UML. The examples are presented in a 'fairly intuitive/evolutionary' manner that demonstrate the key concepts of the UML and help readers explore the wide range of uses of the UML.Springer-Verlag GmbH, Tiergartenstr. 17, 69121 Heidelberg 440 pp. Englisch.…

Taschenbuch. Condizione: Neu. This item is printed on demand - Print on Demand Titel. Neuware -The bibliography which follows represents an effort to provide the active or potential worker in the field of gas chromatography with references to the theory, methodology, and applications of this phase of chemistry. A review of the cited references will afford background for proposed applications, suggest possible solution of a problem, furnish an acquaintance with trends and current work being conducted, and furnish a realization of the possibilities and po tentialities of a technique for the separation, identification, and more recently-preparation of materials. To augment the numerous literature references, titles of papers presented at various scientific meetings are given. Some of these papers have not been published, but they represent a part of the literature of this technique since they indicate the progress and thinking of workers in this field, and provide the opportunity for those with mutual interests to communicate with each other for further details. To afford ready referral for additional information, references are given, when available, to Chemical Abstracts, orto the abstract in the program of the meeting. To accommodate those who may desire microfilm or photostatic copies of the published works, complete pagination is given rather than initial page references. Austin V. Taschenbuch. Condizione: Neu. This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -Molten salts have been used for many years in a large number of industrial applications, and interest in them has increased mark edly in the present century. There is a vast amount of experi mental data published on molten salt systems, and much of this is due to Russian workers. In 1961 the Russian Academy of Sciences published a manual dealing with work in the period 1886-1955. These were updated in 1979 with the publication of a 3-volume collection of binary phase diagrams. The present volume is a translation of the Russian books but is restricted to the systems involving halides. In order to keep the length of the book within bounds the data have been recast. The Russian work treats each system in detail, giving data, methods of study, references, and figures, where available, all together. In this translation all the information is given, but to keep the length down the methods have been classified, the references collected at the end of the volume, and the data given in tabular form. All the figures for halide systems in the Russian volume are included. In the tables, concentrations are given in mole percent; in some cases these have been converted from weight per cent in the original Russian. Where the Russian work was. in tabular form, these have been translated as given. Where the figures exist, these are referred to in the text. 500 pp. Englisch.…

This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -This series of lectures was delivered at the 29th meeting of the Phytochemical Society of North America, held at the University of British Columbia in Vancouver, B. C. , Canada on June 16th-20th, 1989. Topics concerning terpenoids, consisting of isoprene units, are now so numerous that a judicious selection for a relatively limited symposium was difficult. We were able to assemble, however, a potpourri of reviews on topical areas of terpenoid chemistry, biochemistry and biology, by scientists who are making exciting contributions and whose work points the way to significant future research. Because of the importance of terpenoids in the life of plants, and indeed in all living organisms, a periodical review of the mevalonic acid pathway and of the subsequent biochemical events leading to the biosynthesis of isoprenoids needs no justification. Life, as we know it, would not be possible without the ability of living organisms to employ this metabolic sequence which proceeds from condensations of three molecules of acetyl-CoA and terminates with the elaboration of the terpenoid precursors, isopentenyl pyrophosphate and dimethylallyl pyrophosphate. In addition to producing obviously essential compounds that are partially or completely of isoprenoid origin (Fig. 1), such as hormones, photosynthetic pigments, compounds involved in electron transport in respiration and in photosynthesis, oxidative enzymes and membrane components, plants elaborate thousands of novel terpenoids, many of which do not as yet have identifiable physiological, biochemical or even ecological roles, e. g. the cardenolides, ecdysones or saponins. 352 pp. Englisch. …

This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -This book contains nineteen of the twenty papers which were pre sented at the conference on 'Heterogeneous Kinetics at Elevated Tem peratures' held on September 8, 9 and 10, 1969 at the University of Pennsylvania. The papers are concerned primarily with the kinetics of inter facial reactions between the gaseous phase and a condensed phase and include pertinent topics in microscopic and macroscopic trans~ port phenomena. Several of the more recent advances in experimen tal techniques are covered, since progress in the interpretation of kinetic phenomena seems to be intimately connected with advances in experimental method. The discussion after each paper, as well as the general discussion at the end of the meeting, have been included in a strictly edited version; the philosophy being to include only those topics and questions which were not dealt with in the final versions of the manuscripts. The Chairmen (editors) would like to express their thanks to Professor C. B. This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -The continuous advances in our understanding of hematology and neo plastic disorders have made possible this third volume of reviews. Their purpose is to summarize investigations which have defined new concepts, and, it is hoped, stimulate new ideas. In the choice of subjects, we have attempted to retain the balance between academic and clinical interests. We are grateful to the contributors, who have maintained the high stan dards set in the earlier volumes, and for feedback from readers. Both have helped to orient the direction of this series. It was a reader who pointed out that the title of the two earlier volumes, The Year in Hematol ogy, was misleading since it suggested a detailed review of trends and findings limited to the last year. In response to this valid comment, The Year . . . has been changed to Contemporary . . . and the scope has been expanded to encompass the kindred disciplines of hematology and oncol ogy. Another editor, Franco M. Muggia, has been added to provide addi tional expertise for the latter field. The title of the present and future volumes has been changed to Contemporary Hematology/Oncology. It has been pointed out to us that considerable ingenuity will be needed to find topics not already covered. We believe that the papers in the present volume have met this challenge. As before, the readers' comments con cerning Contemporary Hematology/Oncology will be appreciated. Joseph LoBue Albert S. Gordon Robert Silber Franco M. 348 pp. Englisch.…

Taschenbuch. Condizione: Neu. This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -The previous volumes in this series have dealt with the mature cerebral cortex. In those volumes many of the structurally and physiologically distinct areas of the cerebral cortex, their connections, the various types of neurons and neuroglial cells they contain, and the functions of those cells have been considered. In the present volume the contributions focus on the development of the neocortex and hippocampus. Chapters in this volume describe how the neurons migrate in the cortex to attain their ultimate positions, and emphasize the role played by the preexisting pallium or primordial plexiform layer of the cerebral vesicle in the development of the cerebral cortex. The primordial plexiform layer becomes split by the invasion of neurons that will form the cortical plate, and mutants in which the neuronal migration is abnormal provide valuable information about the role of the radial glial cells in this migration. It is also made clear that although the mechanics of development in the hippocampus are similar to those in the neocortex, the development of the hippocampus involves some unique features. For example, neuronal proliferation in the dentate gyrus continues well into postnatal life. 540 pp. Englisch. …

These two facts together suggest that the disrup tion of brain protein synthesis by high phenylala mine levels in infants may account for the mental retardation observed later in these children. Much work remains to be done to confi~m this possibility. However, it is clear from the review and research described by Waisman that neurochemis try has the tools that will lead to an understand ing of - and therefore perhaps control of - these inborn errors of metabolism which otherwise can lead to lifetimes of personal tragedy for the af fected persons and their families. The final section of these Proceedings deals with neurochemical processes which occur during brief behavioral experiences, particularly learn ing. The reported research has been motivated by the search for processes which underlie the encoding of memory, although the identification of these processes is not yet certain in the various studies. Geller and Jarvik begin with a discussion of short term and long term memory storage processes, and describe the induction of retrograde amnesia by various agents as evidence for these processes. 392 pp. Englisch.…

Buch. Condizione: Neu. This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -The increasingly prevalent use of online- or blended-learning in schools universities has resulted in asynchronous online discussion forum becoming an increasingly common means to facilitate dialogue between instructors and students, as well as students and students beyond the boundaries of their physical classrooms. This proposed academic book contributes to the literature on asynchronous online discussions in the following three main ways: First, it reviews previous research studies in order to identify the factors leading to limited student contribution. Limited student contribution is defined as students making few or no postings, students exhibiting surface-level thinking or students demonstrating low-level knowledge construction in online discussions. It then identifies the various empirically-based guidelines to address the factors. Second, three potential guideline dilemmas that educators may encounter: (a) use of grades, (b) use of number of posting guideline, and (c) instructor-facilitation are introduced. These are guidelines where previous empirical research shows mixed results when they are implemented. Acknowledging the dilemmas is essential for educators and researchers to make informed decisions about the discussion guidelines they are considering implementing. Third, nine exploratory case studies related to student-facilitation and audio-based discussion are reported on and examined. Using students as facilitators may be an alternative solution to educators who wish to avoid the instructor-facilitation guideline dilemma. Using audio discussion would be useful for participants with poor typing skills or those who prefer talking to typing. The proposed book is distinctive in comparison to current competitor titles because all the findings and guidelines are empirically-based. Furthermore, the nine expanded case studies provided specifically address the issue of student/peer facilitation and audio-based discussion. Student/peerfacilitation and audio discussion are two areas that hitherto received comparatively lesser attention compared to instructor facilitation and text-based discussion. 156 pp. Englisch.…

Taschenbuch. Condizione: Neu. This item is printed on demand - Print on Demand Titel. Neuware -The growing concern about where energy rich chemicals for the future will come from has stimulated a resurgence of interest in the potentialities of microbial fermentations to assist in meeting anti cipated demands for fuels and chemicals. While much attention has been given recently to the early deployment of alcohol production plants and similar currently available technologies, the potential future developments have received much less attention. One of the intentions of the present symposium was to look ahead and try to perceive some of the prospects for future fermentation technology. In order to accomplish this, a symposium program of sizable diversity was developed with workers giving a representative cross section of their particular specialty as an indicator of the status of basic information in their area. In addition, an attempt was made to elicit from the various participants the types of fundamental infor mation which should be generated in the coming years to enable new fermentation technology to proceed expeditiously. In organizing the symposium particular effort was made to involve workers from the academic, industrial and governmental scientific communities.Springer Verlag GmbH, Tiergartenstr. 17, 69121 Heidelberg 604 pp. Englisch.…

Taschenbuch. Condizione: Neu. This item is printed on demand - Print on Demand Titel. Neuware -The previous volumes in this series have dealt with the mature cerebral cortex. For example, neuronal proliferation in the dentate gyrus continues well into postnatal life.Springer Verlag GmbH, Tiergartenstr. 17, 69121 Heidelberg 540 pp. Englisch.…

Taschenbuch. Condizione: Neu. This item is printed on demand - Print on Demand Titel. Neuware -This book started out as a 'Manual. ' The idea was to offer straightforward instruction on how to handle patients in whom renal function is altered by intrinsic as well as systemic or extrarenal disease. While we have attempted to provide simple approaches to most conditions, we have gone beyond that and offer here more detailed description of pathophysiology, diagnosis and therapy. Thus, the 'Manual' has become a Handbook. In so doing we hope we have widened the audience for which the book may be useful. As it now stands, we envision that students, house staff, nephrology trainees, nephrologists, primary-care physicians, and nurses of specialized units, interested in kidney-related disturbances and in alterations of the composi tion of the extracellular fluid, will benefit from reading the Handbook. While providing a rational background for the treatments outlined, each author has attempted to narrate the reasons why such therapy is utilized. Frequently, the information is provided in tables and figures to which ready reference can be made. The flow-chart approach has also been utilized to illustrate pathophysiological sequence or steps in therapy. In most instances, the discussion of pathophysiology has been limited to what is widely ac cepted rather than treading into anything controversial, unless the nature of the problem or the nature of our knowledge is ambiguous.Springer Verlag GmbH, Tiergartenstr. 17, 69121 Heidelberg 592 pp. Englisch. …

Taschenbuch. Condizione: Neu. This item is printed on demand - Print on Demand Titel. Neuware -The science (or even the art!) of instrumentation is of fundamental import ance to engineers, scientists and medical workers. Instruments are the eyes and ears of the technologist. (His nose is reserved for detecting the effects of excess current. ) Without sensors and their associated signal processing systems there would be no modern transport, no National Grid distributing electricity, and anyone unlucky enough to fall ill would be offered only the most primitive medical treatment. The progress that has been made in almost all areas of technology can be seen in terms of the rate at which the necessary instrumentation has been developed. For example, in recent years many improvements have been made to the performance of the internal combus tion engine. More and more power has been squeezed out of smaller and more economic engines. One of the reasons is that in the last few years sensors have been developed which allow investigations to be made of the way in which the flame front spreads inside a cylinder after ignition. This work has led to a redesign of the geometry of the inlet valves and the piston, and more efficient engines are the result. The process of instrumentation is often considered solely in terms of the sensors used and their associated electronics. However, there are two steps involved in making any measurement. These are, first, getting the data, which is where sensors and electronics are used, and second, analysing it.Springer Verlag GmbH, Tiergartenstr. 17, 69121 Heidelberg 240 pp. Englisch.…

Taschenbuch. Condizione: Neu. This item is printed on demand - Print on Demand Titel. Neuware -Five years ago, the worldwide powder metallurgy fraternity gathered in New York City to attend the first international conference devoted entirely to powder metal lurgy to take place in the United States. It was a tentative venture, entered into by the sponsors with no idea as to whether it would fail or succeed. The only assurances we had were that the metal-powder producing and consuming industries were rapidly expanding and that powder metallurgy was truly becoming one of the international sciences. The 1960 Conference was successful not only in terms of attendance and interest, but also in terms of knowledge gained. The literature had been enriched by the contributions of its participants to foster and encourage this type of world wide exchange. Thus, another such conference was held in 1965-expanded in scope and supplemented by an exhibition of the latest advances in raw materials, processing equipment, and finished products of powder metallurgy. On behalf of the Conference sponsors-the Metal Powder Industries Federa tion, the American Powder Metallurgy Institute, and the Metallurgical Society of AIME-I thank all those who participated and who helped make the 1965 Interna tional Powder Metallurgy Conference a rewarding experience and memorable event in our industry's history. Support of the National Science Foundation, which made it possible for several speakers from abroad to participate in the program, is gratefully acknowledged.Springer Verlag GmbH, Tiergartenstr. 17, 69121 Heidelberg 416 pp. Englisch. …

Neuware -The International Society of Psychoneuroendocrinology organized its second congress in Budapest between 1 and 3 July, 1971. The sudden death on the 27th of July, 1970, of Professor Max Reiss, the President of the Society, nearly caused a break in the preparation ofthe Congress, but with the invaluable help of Professor Donald H. Ford, Treasurer and Acting President, and Professor Francesca Brambilla, Secretary of the Society, the Organizing Committee surmounted the difficulties. The Organizing Committee of the Congress set out five main topics discussed in five sections by invited lecturers and collective papers by regis tered discussants. Technically, the Congress was organized by the Hungarian Physiological Society in cooperation with the Federation of Hungarian Medical Societies in the building of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences. Thanks to the generosity of the Medical Section of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences we are able to publish the Pro ceedings of the Congress by the Publishing House of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences jointly with Plenum Press, New York. The Congress was sponsored by the International Society of Psychoneuroendo crinology, the Hungarian Academy of Sciences, the Hungarian Pharmaceutical Industry, the Factory of Electronic Measuring Instruments, the Upjohn Co., Kalamzoo, Michigan and the Wellcome Research Laboratory, Langley Court, Backenhom, Kent, England. On behalf of the Organizing Committee may I ex press our grateful thanks for their generous assistance which, despite many difficulties, made the successful organization of an international congress possible.Springer Verlag GmbH, Tiergartenstr. 17, 69121 Heidelberg 532 pp. Englisch.…

Taschenbuch. Condizione: Neu. This item is printed on demand - Print on Demand Titel. Neuware -Liane B. Russell Biology Division, Oak Ridge National Laboratory Oak Ridge, TN 37830 Composite individuals have always excited mankind's imagina tion. Even the earliest recorded mythologies are full of fanciful examples of creatures such as centaurs, mermaids, androgynes, and winged horses. While real, naturally occurring, mosaics might not appear as spectacular to the popular mind, their study -- particu larly in Drosophila and plants -- has made important contributions to genetics, starting relatively early in this century. In mammals, too, examples of mosaics resulting from early or late somatic muta tions and from abnormal egg maturation and/or fertilization events have been known since the 1930's and exploited for the information they could provide on such subjects as the or1g1n of the germline and the extent of cell mixing (see Russell 1964). Two major, and unrelated, advances, both published 17 years ago, suddenly provided a wealth of material for the study of mam malian mosaicism. One was the successful manipulation of early embryos to make viable aggregation chimeras (Tarkowski 1961; Mintz 1962) -- a feat made possible by earlier advances in embryo culture and transfer. The other was the hypothesis that only one X chromo some of a mammal is active (Lyon 1961; Russell 1961) and that, by virtue of the fact that the choice of the active X is made at ran dom early in development, the normal mammalian female is a mosaic for any X-linked genetic heterozygosity.Springer Verlag GmbH, Tiergartenstr. 17, 69121 Heidelberg 500 pp. Englisch.…

Taschenbuch. Condizione: Neu. This item is printed on demand - Print on Demand Titel. Neuware -The application of solid-state detectors of high energy resolution to x-ray spectrometry, and the increasing use of compu ters in both measurement and data evaluation, are giving a new stimulus to x-ray techniques in analytical chemistry. The Twentieth Annual Denver X-ray Conference reflects this renewed interest in several ways. The invited papers, grouped in Session I, review the charac teristics of the detectors used in the measurement of x-rays. One paper is dedicated to the detection of single ions. Although such a subject may appear to be marginal to the purposes of the Denver Conference, we must recognize the affinity of techniques applied to similar purposes. Ion probe mass spectrometry is dedicated to tasks similar to those performed by x-ray spectrometry with the electron probe microanalyzer. Scientists and technologists will see these two techniques discussed in the same meetings. The discussion of automation and programming is not limited to the two invited speakers, but extends to papers presented in more than one session. The matter of fluorescence analysis by isotope- and tube-excitation will also be of great interest to those concerned with the practical applications of x-ray techniques. The communications contained in this volume, and the lively discussions which frequently followed the presentation of papers, attest to the vitality of the subjects which are the concern of the Annual Denver X-ray Conference.Springer Verlag GmbH, Tiergartenstr. 17, 69121 Heidelberg 588 pp. Englisch.…

Neuware -This book contains nineteen of the twenty papers which were pre sented at the conference on 'Heterogeneous Kinetics at Elevated Tem peratures' held on September 8, 9 and 10, 1969 at the University of Pennsylvania. B. Alcock for vigorously leading the final discussion period and for his entertaining after-dinner remarks on the evening of the conference banquet. The Chairmen would also like to place on record their indeptedness to Dr. D. R. Gaskell who, with the assistance of Mr. P. C. Shumaker, was largely responsible for the efficient technical arrangements of the meeting; to Dr. P. Italy from 8th-15th October 198~. Aims and contributions are described at greater length in the Introduction and the following chapters. It is hoped that this volume will provide a critical overview of hemispheric specialization in relation to individual differences, but one that is not intended to be comprehensive. Three contributions on this theme are made by authors who were invited to the Workshop but were unable to participate in it. The volume contains a critical appraisal of the differentially specialized functions of left and right human cerebral hemispheres in verbal and visuospatial domains respectively (formerly cerebral dominance). in relation to individual variation due. for example. to gender and handedness. Critical cross-comparison of several methods of assessing hemispheric specialization such as perceptual/behavioral. clinical/neurological. electrophysiological and 'real time' methods of assessment of cerebral orientation have been made. Individual differences have been considered in relation to statistical concepts in the assessment of cerebral lateralization. Some emphasis has been placed on the application of these methods and concepts to psychopathology.Springer Verlag GmbH, Tiergartenstr. 17, 69121 Heidelberg 420 pp. Englisch.…
