The goal of this project is to develop techniques for modeling real objects and/or environments into geometric and photometric models through computer vision techniques. By developing such techniques, time consuming modeling process, currently un dertaken by human programmers, can be (semi-)automatically performed, and, as a result, we can drastically shorten the developing time of such virtual reality systems, reduce their developing cost, and widen their application areas. Originally, we began to develop geometric modeling techniques that acquire shape information of objects/environments for object recognition. Soon, this effort evolved into an independent modeling project, virtual-reality modeling, with the inclusion of photometric modeling aspects that acquire appearance information, such as color, texture, and smoothness. Over the course of this development, it became apparent that environmental modeling techniques were necessary when applying our techniques to mixed realities that seamlessly combine generated virtual models with other real/virtual images. However, as field and laboratory work continued, there began to develop a suspicion that not all of the Eocene story was being told. It became apparent that most fossil samples, especially those from the American West, were derived from similar preservational circumstances and similar depositional settings. A program was initiated to look for other potential sources of fossil samples, either from non-traditional lithologies or from geographic areas that were not typically sampled. As this program of research grew it began to demonstrate that different lithologies and different geographic areas told different stories from those that had been developed based on more typical faunal assemblages. This book is conceived as an introduction to non-traditional Eocene fossils samples, and as a place to document and discuss features of these fossil assemblages that are rare or that come from rarely represented habitats.

This series was established at the ZFMK in the early 1980s, and has variably focused on systematics and ecology of tropical organisms, with an emphasis on Africa. Previous volumes are those edited by Schuchmann (1985), Peters and Hutterer (1990), Ulrich (1997), and Rheinwald (2000). The symposium in 2004 was organized by the Entomology Department under the direction of Michael Schmitt. The intention was to focus on Africa rather than on a particular taxon, and to highlight biodiversity at all levels ranging from molecules to ecosystems. This focus was timely partly because of the currently running BIOTA Africa programmes (BIOdiversity Monitoring Transect Analysis in Africa). BIOTA is an interdisciplinary research project focusing on sustainable use and conservation of biodiversity in Africa . Session titles were Biogeography and Speciation Processes, Phylogenetic Patterns and Systematics, Diversity Declines and Conservation, and Applied Biodiversity Informatics. Each session was opened by an invited speaker, and all together 77 lectures and 59 posters were presented. There were over 200 participants and it was gratifying to us to meet colleagues from 26 nations, including Russia, Ukraine, Japan, USA, and ten African countries. We thank all participants for their valuable contributions.
