The goal of the research presented here is to show that an archi tecture specialized for Prolog can achieve a ten-fold improve ment in performance over conventional, general-purpose architec tures. This book presents such an architecture for high perfor mance execution of Prolog programs. The architecture is based on the abstract machine descrip tion introduced by David H.D. Warren known as the Warren Abstract Machine (W AM). The execution model of the W AM is described and extended to provide a complete Instruction Set Architecture (lSA) for Prolog known as the PLM. This ISA is then realized in a microarchitecture and finally in a hardware design. The work described here represents one of the first efforts to implement the W AM model in hardware. The approach taken is that of direct implementation of the high level WAM instruction set in hardware resulting in a elSe style archi tecture.

We have to look far beyond the area of traditional atomic spectroscopy since methods of atomic and ion collision physics, nuclear physics, and even particle physics all make important contributions to our knowledge of the static and dynamical state of atoms and ions, and thereby greatly add to the continuing fascination of a field of research which has given us so much fundamental knowledge since the middle of the last century. This symposium was sponsored by IBM Germany and was held September 17-19, 1979, in Bad Neuenahr, West Germany.…According to Graham Richards [Nature 278, 507 (1979)] the 'Third Age of Quantum Chemistry' has started-;-where the results of quantum chemical calculations have become so accurate and reliable that they can guide the experimentalists in their search for the unknown. The particular example highlighted by Richards was the suc cessful prediction and subsequent identification of the relative energies, transition probabilities and geometries of the lowest triplet states of acetylene. The theoretical predictions were based chiefly upon the work of three groups: Kammer [Chern. Phys. Lett. ~, 529 (1970)] had made qualitatively correct predictions; Demoulin [Chern. Phys. 11, 329 (1975)] had calculated the potential energy curves for the two lowest triplet states (3 and 3 ) of B A acetylene; and Wetmore and Schaefer III [J. Chern. Phys. ~~ 1648 (1978)] had determined the geometries of the cis (3B and ~A ) and the trans (3B and 3A ) isomers of these two sta~es. Inua 2 2 guided search, Wendt, Hunziker and Hippler [J. Chern. PHys. 70, 4044 (1979)] succeeded in finding the predicted near infrared absorption of the cis triplet acetylene (no corresponding absorp tion for the trans form was found, which is in agreement with theory), and the resolved structure of the spectrum confirmed the predicted geometries conclusively. 344 pp. Englisch.

In contrast to the considerable attention paid by conferences, schools and workshops to t…he static and structural aspects of glasses, there has been no forum devoted primarily to the dynamic and energetic aspects of amorphous solids. The NATO Workshop on Coherence and Energy Transfer in Glasses was organized to address this deficiency. The intent was to bring together in an intense and interactive environment, experts in several rather disparate subfields relating to the dynamics and energetics of disordered systems. This volume represents the Proceedings of that Workshop, which took place in September 1982 at Clare College of Cambridge University. Forty-three scientists from eight NATO countries participated. These included representatives from universities and industrial laboratories, as well as government research institutions. The meeting was organized into eight formal sessions and one informal session devoted entirely to unstructured discussion. Each formal session featured two comprehensive lectures. An additional 60 to 90 minutes was devoted in each session to discussions and contributions related to the lectures. Since only about 60% of the session time was devoted to formal presentations, the discussions formed an equally important part of the workshop. In all, a total of 79 lecturers and students attended the meeting: they had diverse backgrounds in chemistry, physics and mathematics. In my proposal to NATO requesting financial support for an Advanced Study Institute, I suggested that molecular physics was facing a qualitatively new experimental situation in which the exploration of previously inaccessible dynamical phenomena would become of increasing importance. At the same time I was aware that in recent years powerful theoretical techniques, that might prove crucial tools for the interpretation of the new experiments, have been developed in mathematics and theoretical physics. The aim of the ASI was to review at an advanced level these recent developments, juxtaposing new theory with new experimental pos sibilities in the hope that the participants in the-Institute would through their subsequent work increase the awareness of the whole molecular theory community of the changing nature of chemical physics. The solid, liquid, and gaseous states are ordinary states, but the fourth state of matter, the plasma state, has retained a somewhat extraordinary character. It is now recognized that most of the matter of the universe is in the ionized state. but on the earth. the plasma state is still the exception. Hence the importance and also the difficulty of investigations dealing with ionized matter, which have been greatly furthered by the development of thermonuclear fusion research. The study of matter in the ionized state comprises a large diversity of problems belonging to many different branches of phys ics. A number of them relate to the microscopic properties of plasmas and concern the structure and the collisional behavior of atomic constituents. This Institute was the third course of the Internationa…l School of Low Tempera ture Physics, which was established at the Centre in 1977 with the guidance and inspiration of T. Regge and A. Zichichi. The 1982 Course was centered on a topic which brought together fundamental basic research and the most recent promising technological applications. Accordingly, the participants represented a wide spectrum of industrial and government laboratories, as well as universities from various countries. The program of topics and speakers was developed with the advice of the Organizing Committee, composed of H. Frohlich, T. Regge, B. Stritzker, and L. Testardi. This Institute emphasized recent developments in the science and technology of superconductivity. A historical perspective was provided by H. Frohlich, whose lectures recall the earliest discoveries and theoretical attempts to understand superconductivity. Ironically, his early suggestion of the electron-phonon coupling as a key to superconductivity was met with initial widespread skepticism. Later, the development of field theory methods for solid state physics problems, and the evolution of the BCS theory has led to a seemingly unanimous concensus regarding the e1ectron phonon mechanism as the predominant source of superconductivity in known materials. The existence of re ceptor substances on the surface of cells that recognize and bind to extracellula…r molecules was proposed at the beginning of the century by the pharmacologist and immunologist Paul Ehrlich and the physiologist J. N. Langley. Since then, receptors have been found to play an important role in numerous physiological and pathological processes. Over the years many attempts have been made to physically isolate and chemically characterize receptors, but because of the receptors' extremely low concentration and membrane localization, these ef forts have met with limited success. Yet, despite the failure to characterize receptor substances, the concept of the presence of such molecules has had considerable heuristic value. Using pharmacological, physiological, and im munologic approaches, researchers have identified several specific receptors, e. g. , a-and ~-adrenergic, nicotinic and muscarinic cholinergic, and histami nergic. With the characterization of various types of receptors on cell mem branes, many drugs were developed that proved to be experimentally and ther apeutically useful. It was only in the early 1970s that methods for the specific measurement, chemical characterization, and physical isolation of cell membrane receptors were developed. These advances were made possible by the availability of ligands with high specific radioactivity that retained their biological activity and of experimental procedures that differentiated between specific and non specific binding of ligands. 696 pp. Englisch.

Perhaps because…they so wanted the working class to achieve greater social and economic justice and because they insisted it was not happening, I became curious to know the reasons why. Without even being aware of it, I began to explore a possible explanation-the internal diver sity of the working class. In my studies of autoworkers (the prototype proletarians) in the United States, Italy, Argentina, and India, I discovered that they seemed to be more divided economically, socially, and politically in the more eco nomically advanced countries-an idea that ran contrary to the evolution ary predictions of my Marxist friends. When I reported this in Blue-Collar Stratification (1976), I was surprised that some of them who were commit ted to an ideology of working-class solidarity attacked the hypothesis because it ran against their convictions. 400 pp. Englisch.
