The procedures we employ for preparing tissues and cells are not totally understood, but enough information is available to allow investigators to make reasonable choices concerning the best techniques to apply to their parti cular problems. There are countless specialized techniques in the field of electron and light microscopy that require the acquisition of specialized knowledge, particularly for interpretation of results (electron tomography and energy dispersive spectroscopy immediately come to mind), but most laboratories possessing the equipment to effect these approaches have specialists to help the casual user. The advent of computer operated electron microscopes has also broadened access to these instruments, allowing users with little technical knowledge about electron microscope design to quickly become operators. This has been a welcome advance, because earlier instru ments required a level of knowledge about electron optics and vacuum systems to produce optimal photographs and to avoid 'crashing' the instruments that typically made it difficult for beginners.

Mobile computing is a new paradigm of computing in which users carrying portable devices have access to shared infrastruc ture in any location at any time. Mobile computing is a very challenging topic for scientists in computer science and electrical engineering. The representative system for ad hoc wireless networking is called MANET, an acronym for 'Mobile Ad hoc NETworks'. MANET is an autonomous system consisting of mobile hosts connected by wireless links which can be quickly deployed.

However, bone loss is related to a suite of complex and often synergistically related factors including genetics, pathology, nutrition, mechani cal usage, and lifestyle. It is not surprising that its incidence and severity vary among populations. There has been increasing interest to investigate bone loss and osteoporosis from an anthropological perspective that utilizes a biocultural approach. Biocultural approaches recognize the inter-relationship between biological, cultural, and environmental variables. Anthropological studies also highlight the value of evolutionary and population approaches to the study of bone loss. These approaches are particularly suited to elucidate the multifactorial etiology of bone loss. The idea for this volume came out of a symposium organized by the editors at the 70th annual meeting of The American Association of Physical Anthropologists in Kansas City, Missouri. Many of the symposium participants, along with several additional leading scientists involved in bone and osteoporosis research, are brought together in this volume. This is obviously a very ambitious title and I will only be able to talk on a few selected topics. I th was very pleased with the invitation to come and address this 75 anniversary. First because of the importance that I associate to institutions like the WIFO as part of the democratic processes by which economic policy decisions get made - that is one of the themes that I am going to come back to. Second, of course, because the fact that the WIFO was founded by von Hayek and von Mises makes it a very interesting institution for any economist. The events of the last 75 years could hardly have been anticipated by either von Mises or von Hayek in the 1920s when the institution was founded.
