The relatively large number of papers would result in quite a sizable volume if bound in one set of covers. For this reason, and to present the material in areas of more specific mterest, Volume 7 was divided into two parts, Part A, Physical-Inorganic, and Part B, Physical-Organic Developments. Neuware - Hyperbilirubinemia of the neonate and the related risk of brain damage with conseguent important alterations in motor development, particularly in sick preterm babies, remains a major problem in nurseries throughout the world. Since its introduction in the 1950's phototherapy has been used… for reducing serum bilirubin concentrations in the newborn with hyperbilirubinemia; however, only recently the photoprocesses invoked by light on various substrates including bilirubin have been clari fied in sufficient detail. Light treatment actually exemplifies the intimate relationship between the clinical and basic sciences: the better understanding of the mechanism of phototherapy as a result of investigations initiated in the laboratory has been extended to the bedside as new types of lamps or new schedules of treatment. As a consequence, phototherapy of hyperbilirubinemia has emerged as a well-established branch of photomedicine, based on molecular photo biology, scientific method, and creative use of physics and sophis ticated electrooptical capabilities. The collaboration and exchange of information between workers in different basic and clinical di sciplines is likely to stimulate a further optimization of photo therapy. The purpose of this monograph is to discuss some of the new aspects of bilirubin metabolism and phototherapeutic treatment. Bilirubin conjugation in the fetal and early neonatal life, the mechanism of bilirubin entry into the brain, the measurements of bilirubin concentration in the skin and serum bilirubin binding capacity are discussed by a number of prominent neonatologists.

In this span, the symposia have shown a steady increase in attendance, in the number of…papers presented, in the number of sessions, and in the number of days the conference lasted. The duration of the most recent sym posium was four days, with sessions devoted to molecular spectroscopy, including infrared, Raman, ultraviolet, and visible, and to X-ray, NMR, emission, and flame spectroscopy, respectively, with a special session devoted to gas chroma tography because of its growing interest in applied spectro scopic work. Another feature of this last symposium was the attempt on part of the Symposium Committee to establish and maintain the scientific level at that of applied physics. This should place the present symposium at a level somewhere between that of the Ohio State symposium and that of the Pittsburgh meeting, thus approaching the level of applied chemical physics. In addition, the symposium was designed to offer to sci entists from other disciplines and students an opportunity to attend introductory panels and lectures and at the same time the mature investigators a meeting ground and the chance to keep abreast of the latest developments in spectroscopy. It is therefore appropriate to devote a meeting to the topic. The first such meeting was organized by the late Ron Duckworth, and held… in 1974 at the University of Strathclyde in Scotland. As a result of this first meeting, the organization known as International Symposium on the Properties of Water (ISOPOW) was born, and since that first ISOPOW meeting there have been five international meetings. At each meeting, participants from academia and from industry have shared state of the science information pertinent to the role of water in foods. Each meeting has served as a review of the current state of knowledge. ISOPOW 6 is the first of these meetings where Ron Duckworth's presence has not been felt, though he clearly attended the meeting in spirit. A lively group of academics and industrial scientists assembled in Santa Rosa, California, to discuss the current state of the science. As meeting chairperson, I must acknowledge the tremendous contributions made by the organizing committee, by the session chairpersons and by the central committee. Without all their help, nothing could have been achieved. Most important to the success of the meeting, however, was the very active participation of all attendees. It includes first a detailed description of applications of physical techniques-such as X-ray fiber diffraction methods (Chapter 1), 2H and 13C NMR spectroscopy (Chapter 2), and calorimetry (Chapter 3)-in the study of the properties of lipid model membranes. A description of how to measure molecular mobility in membranes (Chapter 4) follows, and the book concludes with three chapters in which biological membranes are the subject of study. Such has been the case in the area under consideration he…re beginning about fifteen years ago when the possibility of studying chemical reactions in crossed molecular beams captured the imagination of physical chemists, for one could imagine investigating chemical kinetics at the same level of molecular detail that had previously been possible only in spectroscopic investigations of molecular stucture. This created an interest among chemists in scattering theory, the molecular level description of a bimolecular collision process. Many other new and also powerful experimental techniques have evolved to supplement the molecular beam method, and the resulting wealth of new information about chemical dynamics has generated the present intense activity in molecular collision theory. During the early years when chemists were first becoming acquainted with scattering theory, it was mainly a matter of reading the physics literature because scattering experiments have long been the staple of that field. It was natural to apply the approximations and models that had been developed for nuclear and elementary particle physics, and although some of them were useful in describing molecular collision phenomena, many were not. The most relevant treatise then available to students was Mott and Massey's classic The Theory of Atomic Collisions, \* but, as the title implies, it dealt only sparingly with the special features that arise when at least one of the collision partners is a molecule. 336 pp. Englisch.

In addition, n-bonding has expanded the intriguing area of organometallic chemistry threefold, bringing in all the transition metals, the lanthanides, and the actinides. So much has been discovered and developed in the area of n-bonded 'complexes' of the metals that important new industrial processes based on such substances have been developed. A truly comprehensive review of all n-bonded compounds of the metals would now result in an impossibly large and expensive volume, and would require monthly revision. In…general, the papers selected by the editors are those of the symposium type and not those papers pertaining to a specific research topic that one expects to be sub mitted to a journal. Not all of the submitted papers were included. Some revisions could not meet the deadline and others were not accepted based on the advice of the reviewers. It is the opinion of the committee that this type of publication has an important place in the literature. The Mid-America Symposium is sponsored annually by the Chicago Section in cooperation with the Cincinnati, Detroit, Indianapolis, Milwaukee, Niagara Frontier, and St. Louis Sections of the Society of Applied Spectroscopy, and the Chicago Gas Chromatography Group. Although the Mid-America is often thought of as a regional meeting, its attendees and authors generally come from all parts of the United States and Canada. Both applied and theoretical principles were provided in sessions on X-ray, emission, atomic-absorption, nuclear magnetic resonance, infrared, Raman, nuclear-particle, and gamma ray spectroscopy; activation analysis; and gas chromatography. Yet, in spite of the ancient lineage and the practical as well as theoretical significance of polychloroaromatics, there has existed so far no review exclusively devoted to their chemistry. Three inter national symposia on polychloro-chemistry since 1968, in which polychloroaromatics figured prominently in discussions amongst chemists and biologists, are evidence for the growing importance of this subject. Althoug…h we were expecting a progressive increase in awareness of the role played by viruses in different diseases, we did not expect the outbreak of a fatal disease that was going to shake the roots of our society. The appearance of the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV-1) in the early 80's, has prompted a unique re search impetus in the area of Medical Virology. The knowledge that we are gaining in our attempt to understand the biology of HIV-1 and the immuno logical response to this virus should not only help us control the spread of this virus, but should also help us to better understand other viral infections. Let us hope that during the 1990's we can learn how to control HIV-1 infections so that by the end of the decade, no more human lives succumb to an infection with this virus. Clear…ly, the aim of such studies is that, once identified, these agents can be eliminated from the environment. Yet, despite these advances and the elimination of some important carcinogenic agents, one major problem exists. It is a constant monitor of all oncologic study and diminishes the importance of every experiment and of every clinical observation. As we noted earlier, that problem is our inability to define the malignant cell. It is through studies of the fundamental biology of tumors that we seek this definition. A vast amount of information has been gathered which describes what this cell does and-to a lesser extent-how it does it. But the why evades us. We have been unable to define the malignant cell, save in broad terms by comparing it to its normal counterpart. The major problem appears to be that the malignant cell does so much. It is a chimera, mystifyingly composed of normal activities and structures, of phenotypic schizophrenia with embryonic, fetal, and adult charac teristics and, occasionally, a hint of an unclassifiable capacity unique to malignant cells. 456 pp. Englisch.

Much of this effort has been directed toward… the rubbery rather than the glassy state. It is generally assumed that networks possess an av erage composition to which average properties may be assigned; from such a continuum view, a powerful analysis of such properties as modulus, swelling, birefringence and thermoelasticity has emerged. In the years following the rise of polymer characterization (the late 40's and early 50's), many scientists began to study ap parent relations between the properties of linear polymer molecules and the networks obtainable therefrom. This search was also stimu lated by the wide range of applications of polymer networks in com mercial elastomers, thermosets and coatings. Frequently, these data were confidently matched with curves obtained from statisti cally describable models of networks of ghost chains, uniformly distributed in space. More recently, it has become apparent that polymer chains in networks are not as ideal as assumed in the formulation of statis tical models, and there has been a shift in emphasis towards the less than ideal, perturbed and possibly inhomogeneous networks which are more frequently encountered in practice. The continuum approach, however, had to be developed before inhomogeneous systems could be described; the present volume, therefore, contains both views. 508 pp. Englisch.

Whereas the topics of the first week have been mostly concerned with the general aspects of cell interactions in embryogenesis (section I and II of this book), the second week has been mainly devoted to the structures and functions of the direct cell contact sites at the membrane level as gap junctions, including electrophysiological aspects, dye coupling and selective cell-cooperation in some model systems as the neuro-muscular junctions (section III-V of this book). Concentrated solutions, on the other hand, were commonly regarded as mainly of interes…t to practitioners, being too complex for the rigorous application of statistical theory. Given the preoccupation with the isolated polymer molecule and the attendant focus on the state of infinite dilution, it is not surprising that aggregation, and inter-polymer associ ation in general, was the bugaboo of experimentalists. These attitudes have changed remarkably over the last few decades. The application of sealing theory to polymer solutions has stimulated investigation of the semi-dilute state, and the region between infinite dilution and swollen gel is no longer perceived as terra incognita. New techniques, such as dynamic light scattering, have proven to be of much value in such investigations. At the same time, it has become clear that consideration of strong inter- and intra-polymer forces, superimposed on the familiar description of the statistical chain, is prerequisite to the application of polymer science to numerous systems of interest.
