The conference endeavored to bring together re searchers in a field where, paradoxically, the underlying phenomena studied are increasingly coordinated and internationalized, yet the observers remain pre dominantly isolated. Only rarely do they resort to comparisons between coun tries, and still less frequently to an analysis from a transnational outlook. As the contributions to this collection demonstrate, it has become clearer and clearer that -whether or not as a result of a random process, or of technological conditions, or of deliberate enterprise strategy - the determinants of market structures and their changes as time passes, have created fundamentally similar effects in different countries, resulting in industrial structures of the same kind. Following that occasion, we began to seek each other out in order to continue such conversations, because we had found no other opportunity to discuss these significant events. We knew our experiences were rich sources of cross-cultural data and stimuli to rethinking anthro pological theory and methods. A cursory review of the literature on fieldwork revealed, to our surprise, that fieldworker's experiences with children were rarely and only briefly mentioned (Hostetler and Huntington, 1970, are an early exception). In order to learn more about research that included the ethnographers' children, we organized a conference on the topic at Michigan State University on May 1, 1982. This volume includes papers from that conference, as well as insights and ideas from the formal and informal discussions among the conference participants and audience. This volume, like the conference which preceded it, is intended to be the effects of accompanying children on anthropological an exploration of field research and on the effects of fieldwork on the children themselves. During the Second World War, this problem grew out of the very high incidence of upper respira tory infections appearing in new military recruits who were brought together in very large, open quarters. As a result, very interest ing methods were developed to measure these airborne agents, espe cially bacteria, and some important methods were refined for their control. These methods primarily concentrated on ultraviolet radia tion, propylene glycol and other means to reduce the dust in an en vironment. Because of the specialized circumstances at that time the whole consideration of airborne particles became prominent. Now, with the new strides in the recognition of mutagenic and carcinogenic effects attributed to exposure to airborne chemicals from today's technology, the problem has again become quite promi nent. T. ) of which this volume is the scientific proceedings, was held in Istanbul, Turkey on August 22-26, 1994. It is this broad scope that is emphasized in this book. In my opinion, four original contributions define the field as it exists today. The first, a monograph by Broman,1 entitled The Permeability of the Cerebrospinal Vessels in Normal and Pathological Conditions, was the model for many subsequent clinical and 3 experimental studies on BBB pathology. Second, experiments by Davson, summarized in his book entitled Physiology of the Ocular and Cerebrospinal Fluids, indicated that passive entry of nonelectrolytes into brain from blood is governed largely by their lipid 4 solubility. This research supported the original suggestion by Gesell and Hertzman that cerebral membranes have the semipermeability properties of cell membranes. The modem era of the barrier was introduced with the 1965 paper by Crone,2 entitled 'Facilitated transfer of glucose from blood to brain tissue. ' This paper identified stereospecific, facilitated transport of glucose as part of a system of regulatory barrier properties at a time when only a barrier to passive diffusion had been contemplated. Finally, the 1967 paper by Reese and Kamovsky, 11 entitled 'Fine structural localization of a blood-brain barrier to exogenous peroxidase,' sited the barrier at the continuous layer of cerebrovascular endothelial cells, which are connected by tight junctions. 436 pp. Englisch.

We have made the central focus water and electrolyte physiology with an emphasis on endocrinology and tried to comprehensively cover this area of physiology in some of the more heavily studied environments. Although studies on the role of lipoproteins in the mechanism of lipid transport are meritorious in their own right, the ever-increasing interest in chemical and functional properties of this remarkable class of conjugated proteins stems from the impressive evidence of their direct involvement in the genesis and develop ment of atherosclerotic lesions. The initial emphasis on neutral lipids and phospholipids as the most characteristic constituents of operationally defined lipoprotein classes has shifted in recent years to their protein moieties or apolipoproteins. The discovery of a number of apolipoproteins and characterization of familial hypolipoproteinemias as apolipoprotein deficiency disorders indicated that apolipoproteins play an essential role in maintaining the structural stability and integrity of lipoprotein particles. In addition to their role in the formation of lipoproteins, apolipoproteins were shown to perform a variety of functions in metabolic conversion of lipoproteins and their interactions with cellular surfaces. Results from several laboratories have demonstrated that the chemical and metabolic heterogeneity of operationally-defined lipoprotein classes is due to the presence of several discrete lipoprotein particles with similar physical properties but different and characteristic apolipoprotein composition. Whilst this book is a testament to the activity and success of staff of the CEA, it also reviews a number ofthe advances made in the discipline. How ever, it is not intended to be an exhaustive account of those advances; it is assumed that the reader can, if desired, consult the standard monographs, and more recent, more specialized works (notably W.C. Davis and W. Fickett, and C.L. Mader). The history of the discipline is interesting in itself, and also as an illustra tion of the causes which lead to progress in a coherent body of scientific work. The association of materials and cryogenic engineers increases their awareness of recent research in each other's fields and influences the course of future research. The proposal to call a meeting of experts on Waste Heat and Nutrient-Loaded Efflu ents in Aquaculture came from Dr. Ole Devik. His proposal was accepted and sponsored by the Special Program Panel on Eco-Sciences, a subsidiary body of the NATO Science Committee. NATO has extensive programs in the scientific and environmental fields, and I would like to take this opportunity to give you a short outline of these programs. Collaboration and consultation between member countries of the Alliance have been of major concern to the North Atlantic Treaty Organization ever since it was established. In the mid-fifties a serious attempt was made to imple ment the collaboration in nonmilitary fields, and a report\* from a committee of foreign ministers-Lester B. Pearson (Canada), Gaetano Martino (Italy), and Halvard Lange (Norway)-named scientific and technological cooperation as especially important. In the process of traversing the terrain of several intellectual traditions and cutting through various disciplinary forests and thickets, a number of striking observations were made-all leading to two sober ing conclusions.
