All Leonardo's drawings have been interpreted in the light of modern knowledge by a practicing cardiac clinician and anatomist. The veracity of his work is proven against contemporary dissections of cardiac structure and comparison of his illustrations with contemporary images generated by Magnetic Resonance scanners and high definition ultrasound will astound the reader. Ein direktes Verbot von Sektionen durch die katholische Kirche kann weder in Konzilsaufzeichnungen noch in päpstlichen Dekreten nachgewiesen werden, jedoch bestand eine weit verbreitete Ablehnung der Leichenöffnung (unter anderen hatte sich auch der Kirchenvater Augustinus im 5. Jahrhundert scharf gegen die Anatomen gewandt). In die Zeit des Leonardo da Vinci fällt allerdings eine ausdrückliche Erlaubnis der Sezierung durch Papst Sixtus IV. Dabei kooperierte er meist mit angesehenen Ärzten der Zeit, wie etwa mit Marcantonio della Torre (14811511) in Pavia in dem mit diesem erarbeiteten Band zur Skelett- und Muskelanatomie, der über die Formbeschreibung hinaus bereits bewegungsphysiologische Aspekte darstellt. Auf Fragen nach seinem Tun antwortete er, derlei Studien hälfen ihm in der Malerei, den menschlichen Körper mit seinen Proportionen, seinen sichtbaren Muskeln und seinen anderen anatomischen Details korrekt wiederzugeben.
