This circumstance has certain…ly had a negative impact on the development of knowledge in clinical medicine about cerebral venous disease. Cerebra} venous pathology and its consequence is, however, a frequent problern in clinical neurosur gery, both with regard to operative techniques and conservative manage ment. Therefore, it is not surprising that the initiative to collect, for the first time, data on our present knowledge in basic research of cerebral veins, their structure and function under normal and pathological circumstances, came from clinicians. Regarding the cerebral veins the clinician has primarily in view the dysfunctions originating from embryogenetic malformations, phlebitic obstruction, tumourous shunts, or traumatic lesions. But in addition to that, particular attention should be paid to the microstructure ofthe venous vessel walls, their barrier function, and the venous vasomotor system. In addition, a Symposium on the Transfer of Physical Characte…ristics in Moving Fluids which, orig inally, had been scheduled to take place in Stockholm was rescheduled to be held in Vienna immediately following the Symposium on the Irre versible Aspects of Continuum Mechanics. It was felt that the subjects of the two symposia were so closely related that participants should be given an opportunity to attend both. Both decisions were unanimously approved by the members of the General Assembly of IUTAM. Prof. H. PARKUS, Vienna, was appointed Chairman of the Symposium on the Irreversible Aspects, and Prof. L. I. SEDOV, Moscow, was appointed Chairman of the Symposium on the Transfer of Physical Characteristics, with Prof. P ARKUS being re sponsible for the local organization of both symposia. In accordance with the policy set forth by IUTAM, membership of the Symposia was limited and by invitation only. Ein Land wie Österreich, in dem der Wasserkraft und dem Hochwasserschutz eine so wichtige Rolle zukommt, bedarf von Zeit zu Z…eit einer zusammenfassenden statistischen Darstellung dieses technischen Sondergebietes. Die Staubeckenkommission im Bundesministerium für Land- und Forstwirtschaft hat sich schon früh auf Grund der Anregungen des Geschäftsführers, Mi n.-Rat Dr. Otto La n se r, mit der Statistik der Österreichischen Talsperren befaßt. Mit dem in kraft treten der Wasserrechtsnovelle 1959 und der darin gesetzlich verankerten schärferen Gewässeraufsicht sowie strengeren Überwachung der Talsperren ist deren statistische Erfassung nach dem heutigen Stande zu einer dringenden Notwendigkeit geworden. Prof. Dr. Hermann G re n g g hat sich nun auf Grund der Anregung und Bitte der Staubeckenkommission der mühevollen Aufgabe unterzogen, alle wesentlichen technischen Einzelheiten der Österreichischen Talsperren zu erheben und zu einer umfassenden, mit Plänen und Bildern ausgestatteten Statistik zu verarbeiten. Das hiefür besonders geeignete Aufgabenwerk meines Lehrers und Vorgängers im Lehramte für Mechanik an der Technischen Hochschule Graz, F. Wittenbauer, das 1907 erschienen und nach dem Tode des Verfassers von Th. Pöschl in vollständig umgearbeiteter 6. Auflage 1929 herausgegeben worden ist, ist schon seit langem vergriffen. Da das Fehlen dieses Übungsbehelfes von den Studierenden als große Erschwerung beim Studium für die vorgeschriebenen Prüfungen empfunden wird, so glaube ich die immer wieder gewünschte Herausgabe meiner im Laufe von drei Jahrzehnten entstandenen Beispielsammlung, die auch einen Teil meiner Prüfungsaufgaben umfaßt, nicht länger hinausschieben zu dürfen. Diese Sammlung enthält vorwiegend einfache Aufgaben aus der Mechanik des Punktes und starrer Systeme nebst den Lösungen und glie dert sich in drei Teile: I. Statik, H. Kinematik und Kinetik des Massen punktes, IH. Kinematik und Kinetik starrer Systeme.
