This was the third conference in the general area of nuclidic masses…in recent years. The first, a symposium held at the Max Planck Institut fur Chemie in 1956, was international in character but not in name. The First International Conference on Nuclidic Masses was held at McMaster University in September of 1960 in conjunction with and shortly after the meeting of the General Assembly of the International Union of Pure and Applied Physics and the Kingston Conference on Nuclear Structure. The Second International Conference on Nuclidic Masses was held under the sponsorship of the International Union of Pure and Applied Physics and the Nuclear Science Committee of the National Academy of Sciences-National Research Council of the United States. Financial support for the conference came from the United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization. The conference committee was made up of the following individuals: Chairman: J. This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -A decade has passed since systematic studies were initiated in the USA in an attempt at establishing the experimental basis for a surgical technique which was to prove an effective tool in combatting one of the most common diseases…, i.e. cerebrovascular accidents. The development of such intricate vasculosurgical techniques as are required for extra intracranial arterial bypass operations would not have been possible without the aid of the surgical microscope, which had been designed some years earlier. In the past few years increasing emphasis has been placed on establishing clear-cut indications for the bypass operation, because satisfactory long-term results are unlikely to be obtained without them. Needless to say that this requires a close cooperation of the neurosurgeon with a team composed of neurologists, internists, radiologists, and pathologists. Fortunately enough, cooperation between the services of the University of Vienna Medical School proved to be exemplary. While there has been no lack of efforts by major medical centers both in Europe and the overseas countries to perfect bypass operations for cerebrovascular accidents, a comprehensive monograph reviewing all medical and operative problems involved in microvascular surgery for strokes was badly missed by many. 180 pp. Englisch.

Essential to sueeess is aecess to fresh postmortem human bodies, so that injeetions into the vaseular systems may be attempted before any disseetion has been made in the course of the routine pathologie examination. The fact that the English language is well on the way to becoming the international medium at European scientific conferences is a great asset in terms of mutual understanding. It is also worth noting that according to published series nearly 50% ofthe cases affect the thoraco-lumbar junction. From an anatomical point of view, we must note the severity of thoracic spinal cord lesions especially of the thoraco-lumbar junction and of the lumbar region and be able to associate injuries ofthe conus medullaris and of the ca uda equina where there is a possibility of neurological recovery. Clinical evaluation is not always easy, but remains the basis for diagnosis and prognosis. The neurological classification proposed by FRANKEL et al. in 1969 and used at STOKE MANDEVILLE Hospital seems to retain its value. A more sophisticated study of medullary evoked potentials, as described by TsUBOKAWA can allow a more precise localisation and appreciation of the extent ofthe lesion as well as a better evaluation ofthe prognosis and ofthe evaluation of treatment in the acute phase. The neuro-radiological study should include standard views ofthe whole of the spine with antero-posterior and lateral tomograms of the fractured or luxated area.
