Very successful in a variety of positions, and acting for a number of institutions, Hochstetter also played a specific role in establishing the science of man in Vienna. Von häufigen Bronchitiden und Herz beschwerden geplagt, fand der Alternde in der Versenkung in die Fülle eines überreichen Lebens jene Freude und Entspannung, die ihm ein geselliger Verkehr nicht mehr zu bieten vermochte. Diese Aufzeichnungen waren aber Selbstzweck; an ihre Veröffentlichung dachte Wagner.Jauregg nicht, und nur seiner Familie und einem engeren Kreis von Fachgenossen sollten diese Blätter einmal zu gänglich gemacht werden. Durch einen Zufall gelangte das Manuskript vor wenigen Jahren in meine Hände. Da ich den Eindruck gewann, daß sein Inhalt allgemeineres Interesse beanspruchen darf, wandte ich mich an Professor Dr. Theodor Wagner-Jauregg, den Sohn des großen Arztes, mit der Frage, ob es nicht doch möglich sei, diese Blätter in geeigneter Form zu veröffentlichen. Ich erhielt seine Zustimmung und man wird verstehen, mit welcher Freude ich mich dieser Aufgabe .unterzog. Bei der Ausarbeitung unterstützte mich Frau Dr. Marlene lantsch, und ieh habe sie deshalb eingeladen, mit mir zusammen als Heraus geber zu zeichnen. Es war nicht möglich, das Manuskript vollkommen unverändert zu lassen. Es galt zunächst die Tatsache zu respektieren, daß Wagner Jauregg selbst nicht an eine Veröffentlichung gedacht hatte und daß daher die Drucklegung mancher Stellen sicherlich nicht in seinem Sinne gewesen wäre.
