The species Myrothecium belongs to the fungi imperfect…i, order of Moniliales, family Tubercularia ceae (30, 17, 32). The distinction between these and other closely related fungal species is difficult. It has been studied and discussed by various authors (82, 16, 55, 75, 62, 43). Myrothecium species are parasitic on leaves of Gardenia, tomatoes, violets, kidney beans, snapdragons and other common plants. They are also found on decaying tissue and in soil. It was known earlier that cultures of the two species mentioned exhibit cellulolytic properties due to the presence of a very active cellulase which was used for the treatment of cellulose during the production of textiles [for leading references see (42, 66)]. The first investigation of the secondary metabolites of these micro organisms was carried out by BRIAN and MCGOWAN (16). They isolated a crystalline compound, designated as glutinosin and assigned the formula C4sH60016, from cultures of Metarrhizium glutinosum S. Pope, which in fact is a Myrothecium species (82, 55). Glutinosin exhibited anti fungal activity. Eight years later BOWDEN and SCHANTZ (14) described the isolation and characterization of a dermatitic or skinirritating crystal line compound melting at 38°, and possessing the formula C H 04, 1s 22 from culture filtrates of Myrothecium verrucaria. They suspected the presence of additional biologically active substances. 712 pp. Englisch.

During this conventi…on a three-day symposium on Neurosurgery and Medical Ethics was held. In this time of tremendous technical advancement in medicine in general and neurosurgery in particular, we are liable to lose sight of the sick patient as a human being, and the odds are that he will be the object rather than the subject of our action in the near future. It is a purpose and a task of the Academia Eurasiana Neurochirurgica to recognize this thread and to pay attention to tradition, morality and ethics in neurological surgery. The theme of this convention and the subject of the symposium met this purpose as no other. In the scientific sessions during the first day, the moral backgrounds of medical ethics in the most important cultures and religions in east and west were elucidated by invited experts in this field. A mutual respectful understanding of each other's conception of and belief in ethical principles is a growing necessity in our multicultural societies in both continents. On the second day, the ethical aspects of different fields of neurological surgery were discussed by members of the Academia. In this context, also the internationally much-discussed and much-criticized regulations on euthanasia in The Netherlands were explained. 112 pp. Englisch.

For a long time no real… differentiation was possible between the tetra- and penta cyclic triterpenes and the sterols. Then the two latter became disting uishable by their selenium. dehydrogenation products, i. e. , picene and naphthalene derivatives from the pentacyclic triterpenes and DIELS' hydrocarbon from the sterols. It is now apparent that those compounds yielding predominantly I: 2: 8-trimethylphenanthrene on dehydro genation represent yet another class, and this property is regarded as typical of the tetracyclic triterpenes. The group contains both C and C 30 3l compounds and, although the latter fall outside RUZICKA'S strict definition of triterpenes (I42), it seems desirable to permit this deviation. Members with thirty-two carbon atoms may well be discovered in due course. In a most valuable account of the triterpenes written in I949, JEGER. (II3) was able to summarize all that was known about the tetra cyclic group in a very small compass. Most of the work discussed in the present article has been published during the last five years and in that time the structures of some twenty compounds have been elucidated. Of outstanding importance is the revelation of close structural relation ships tQ the steroids, and the presence of C and C side-chains, skeletally 8 9 identical with those of cholesterol and ergosterol. 564 pp. Englisch.

Es hat sich allerdings gezeigt, daB auch eini…ge Nachteile in dieser Art der Behandlung liegen. Ais gravierendst wird diesbezuglich angesehen, daB der Patient von jenem Arzt, der die Blockaden durchfUhrt, abhangig wird und sich bei Abwesenheit dieses Therapeuten verlassen vorkommt, ja verlassen ist, da niemand im Faile neuerlich auftretender Schmerzen so effizient helfen kann. Dazu kommt, daB manchmal an der Therapie mit Nervenblockaden interessierte Arzte die hierzu n6tigen Voraussetzungen nicht mitbringen oder anschaffen. Daraus resultiert, daB bei manchen Anfangern in dieser Technik wesentlich haufiger als n6tig Nebenwirkungen auftreten und die Effizienz doch leidet. Beide diese Nachteile lassen sich durch Anwendung von elektrischem Strom (in ganz spezifischer Weise) umgehen. Das soil nicht heiBen, daB wir von pharmakologischen Nervenblockaden abraten, ganz im Gegenteil. Allerdings benutzen auch wir fUr manche Zustande eher elektrische Blockaden (siehe Haufigkeits tabelle). Vorerst muB jedoch bewiesen werden, daB unter den verschiedenen Arten der Anwendung des elektrischen Stromes von der Haut aus ganz bestimmte Stromfor men bzw. Reizformen eine Wirkung auf Nerven haben. Denn nur bei Nachweis einer solchen Wirkung lassen sich die Prinzipien der Nervenblockade durch Lokalanaesthe tika auch auf Anwendung des elektrischen Stromes ubertragen und die Vorteile der Blockadentechnik auf Behandlung mittels elektrischem Strom anwenden. Die Anleitung zum Ge- brauch der Zahlentafeln war so gehalten, daB sie auch fur Statiker, denen die Plattentheorie nicht gelaufig ist, verstandlich sein solIte. Die verwendeten plattentheoretischen Formeln waren in einem Anhang wiedergegeben; die meisten von ihnen waren damals in keinem anderen Buch zu finden, nur der Losungsansatz war bekannt. Inzwischen ist in den Deutschen und den Osterreichischen Normen fur Massivbrucken die Berechnung der Fahrbahnplatten nach der Plattentheorie vorgeschrieben worden; Hand in Hand damit ging die Vermehrung des Schrifttums urn einschlagige Tafelwerke. Andere Tafelwerke dienen zur Berechnung von Deckenplatten und Behalterwanden. Cacti occur…frequently in tlie more arid and less accessible regions of the American Continent, nearly always within very narrow and definite borderlines. The habitat of a species is in many instances a single valley located in a remote, uninhabited region of the Cordillera. Thus the collection of flowering specimens fit for botanical identification is some times extremely difficult. On the other hand, cacti are apt to develop individual variations in their characteristic morphological features, rendering the definition of a species difficult and often illusory. Specimens taken from their normal habitat to botanical gardens or arboreta often die, degenerate or stop flowering. Taking into account all these difficulties, it is not surprising to find considerable differences of opinion among botanists on the taxonomy of the cactaceae. A considerable number of species have not been well defined and in many cases different names have been given to the same species. Die Beob achtung von Befruchtungsvorgangen zeigt, daB der eigentlichen Ver schmelzung der Geschlechtszellen Reaktionen vorausgehen, an denen offensichtlich chemische Wechselwirkungen beteiligt sind. Besonders deutlich lassen sich solche stoffiichen Wechselwirkungen bei niederen Pflanzen beobachten, bei denen beispielsweise Geschlechtsorgane nur gebildet werden, wenn der entsprechende Partner oder Filtrate seines Kulturmediums vorhanden sind. In anderen Fallen kann man beobachten, daB Geschlechtsorgane durch Luft oder Wasser gerichtet aufeinander zu wachsen oder, daB freibewegliche mannliche Gameten sich gezielt zu stationaren weiblichen Gameten hinbewegen. Solche biologischen Reak tionen sind auBerordentlich empfindlich, und die Konzentration der beteiligten Stoffe ist entsprechend gering. Dies macht die Ansammlung von gentigenden Mengen fUr die StrukturaufkIarung zu einem auBerst mtih samen Unternehmen. Obwohl auch in der alteren Literatur zahlreiche Hinweise auf chemische Wechselwirkungen zwischen Sexualpartnern vor handen sind (42, 43), konnten bisher erst wenige derartige Geschlechts stoffe identifiziert werden. Erst die hochleistungsnihigen modernen Ana lysenmethoden, wie Massen- und Kernresonanz-Spektroskopie, haben hierbei die Forschung wesentlich vorangetrieben. In 1954, with a good number of examples on record, these spectra were analyzed and identified as those of straight-chain conjugated polyenes, comprising tetraenes, pentaenes, hexaenes and heptaenes (85, I30). These antibiotics have since been commonly referred to as the polyene antifungal antibiotics to distinguish them from a host of other miscellaneous antibiotics which also have antifungal properties. Within the next few years, reports of discoveries of new members of this class multiplied rapidly, and almost sixty are now known. Unquestionably, a number of these will eventually be found to be identical with others, as has already happened in several instances: for example, the tetraene 'tennecetin' proved to be a rediscovery of pimaricin (34), and in the methyl pentaenes 'moldcidin E' has been identified with pentamycin (83), and 'lagosin' appears to be indistinguishable from fungichromin (22). Those that have been purified have turned out to be of fairly high molecular weight (ca. 700-1300) and all appear to be substances of rather similar molecular structure. So far only three, pimaricin, fungi chromin (lagosin) and filipin, have been structurally elucidated. 376 pp. Englisch, Deutsch.
