AUTHOR: Luc Tuymans (01958) is one of the most important painters of his generation. His first major museum presentations were held in 1990 at the Provinciaal Museum voor Moderne Kunst, Ostend, Belgium, and the Vereniging voor het Museum van Hedendaagse Kunst, Ghent. In 1992, the artist participated in Documenta IX in Kassel, in addition to having a solo exhibition at Kunsthalle Bern, which helped cement his growing reputation in Europe. In 1994, Luc Tuymans: Superstition debuted at Portikus, Frankfurt, and travelled to David Zwirner, New York; the Art Gallery of York University, Toronto; The Renaissance Society at the University of Chicago; the Institute of Contemporary Arts, London; and Goldie Paley Gallery, Moore College of Art & Design, Philadelphia, establishing him as a major influential artist abroad. In 2001, the artist represented Belgium at the Venice Biennale to great acclaim. Tuymans lives and works in Antwerp and is represented by David Zwirner Gallery. SELLING POINTS: . AUTHOR: Denis Rouvre (01967) is a world class French photographer with an impressive portfolio. Rouvre is a portraitist, whose photos have been published internationally and exhibited and acquired by various museums. Letters As Symbols, contains logos from these submissions and was completed with contemporary work. AUTHOR: Paul Ibou was was a Belgian graphic designer and sculptor. He designed, among other things, a number of logos for large organizations. At the age of 17, Paul created his personal logo and pseudonym. Based on a few spheres and a simple body shape, he made a stylized owl. This owl shape would later return in many of his designs. Owl is "hibou" in French. Vermeersch left out the "h" and looked for a way to make "Ibou" an acronym. It became "Inventive Book Designer and Publisher". Paul Ibou worked first at an advertising studio and then briefly at a photogravure studio. In 1958 he completed the course "Publicity and Letters" at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts of Antwerp . He further studied at the "Higher Institute for Printing" of the Plantin Institute for Typography. Ibou then went to work for Nutricia as an art director. In 1961 Ibou became an independent designer and a few years later he received the first important commissions, including in 1965 for the Biennale for Sculpture in the Middelheim Park in Antwerp. In 1967 he made his first international study trip, which took him to New York. Ibou's fame increased and he received numerous assignments for major institutions. In 1980 he founded a magazine about design: Vorm in Vlaanderen. Of these, 14 issues and 2 yearbooks were published. In 1984 the magazine was stopped after Ibou was involved in a serious car accident, for which he had to recuperate for a long time. In 2001, Ibou stopped working as a graphic designer and focused on painting and sculpture. He sadly passed away in 2023, but his archive lives on through printed matter. SELLING POINTS: . With innumerable analyses by art historians, we thought the most fitting and exciting accompaniment to this display would be a collection of writers' reflections on Tuymans' work. Since one of the…things to make this retrospective display special is its being the artist's debut in Central-Europe, Hungary and Poland, we made a point of inviting authors from the region to comment on his art. We gave complete liberty to our authors to decide what to reflect on: a picture, Tuymans' activity as a painter, or some other aspect of his personality. AUTHOR: Luc Tuymans (01958) is one of the most important painters of his generation. His first major museum presentations were held in 1990 at the Provinciaal Museum voor Moderne Kunst, Ostend, Belgium, and the Vereniging voor het Museum van Hedendaagse Kunst, Ghent. In 1992, the artist participated in Documenta IX in Kassel, in addition to having a solo exhibition at Kunsthalle Bern, which helped cement his growing reputation in Europe. In 1994, Luc Tuymans: Superstition debuted at Portikus, Frankfurt, and travelled to David Zwirner, New York; the Art Gallery of York University, Toronto; The Renaissance Society at the University of Chicago; the Institute of Contemporary Arts, London; and Goldie Paley Gallery, Moore College of Art & Design, Philadelphia, establishing him as a major influential artist abroad. In 2001, the artist represented Belgium at the Venice Biennale to great acclaim. Tuymans lives and works in Antwerp and is represented by David Zwirner Gallery. SELLING POINTS: .
