Rickshaw pullers: work environment, social security and welfare. 8. Mandate for improvement: in light of facts. Annexures. References. Majority of the workforce in India are in the informal sector. This sector has a myriad of less visible and even invisible workers such as the agriculture workers, construction workers, house based workers, barbers, cobblers, rag pickers, vendors, head-loaders, cart pullers, rickshaw pullers and cart drivers living at the survivalist end of the spectrum. They have very fragile incomes, poor working and living conditions and, by and large, remain excluded by the law and all sorts of social protection mechanisms. This volume is based on a study on the workers in informal sector with special reference to rickshaw pullers. These rickshaw pullers, though, play an essential role by providing cheap and flexible transport services to the urban poor, however, continue to remain ignored in most policy-making frameworks. Most of them are among the poorest of the poor and have an unregulated work environment marked by hazardous working and living conditions and daily harassment. Besides providing conceptual framework on informal sector, this book presents various aspects like the migration, socio economic profile, health, welfare and work environment of the rickshaw pullers who, by and large, remain on the margins of the process of development. As these workers are socially and economically vulnerable and deprived due to lack of education, skills and awareness, the book has brought out ways and means via which their quality of life can be improved. The book, thus, suggests various social work intervention strategies and recommendations for their overall development. This book will prove very useful for researchers, students and educators in field of informal Economy, Social Policy and Social Work practice.

The world can be a better place through our thoughtful actions. "A New Dawn" strives to give a voice to the simmering issues of social dignity and justice. The book is a collection of thought provoking poems on women, nature, animals and phylosophy, etc. It hopes to elevate the readers' minds to a new height of hope, consciousness and spirituality. While denouncing exploitation of any kind anywhere, the poet has tried in a subtle but sure way to guide every soul to love and respect the mother earth, and the life in any form, to exhibit sympathy, kindness, and dignity. Nature sometimes becomes cruel, shattering human dreams and aspirations. And this is precisely the reason for all humans to stand together, for each other, not to live an insignificant life in selfish isolation; but a big life; joy of sharing and caring being it's principal moto. The poet reaffirms Benjamin Disraeli's noble thought, "Life is too short to be little." (jacket).

It captures an array of human emotions, makes connections to nature and its various seasons, reconnects to the different qualities of inner soul. The poet and the artist have only one metaphor - the dew. The poems are as simple, reflective and diverse as the dew. As the dew travels through forms, states and seasons so do the poems. As the simplicity of humanity unfolds through the dews, the illustrations add further simplicity to them. To the lovers of pure, simple and charming creations and to the believers of non-extravagant, just-sufficient and heart-warming expressions, Mirrored Dew is a perfect gift!

Rabi describes the journey in the most lyrical way through his native India. The novel tells the story of the real India - the rural India - where humans, animals and every form of life is respected and valued. The main character of A Peddler of Emptiness is a modern person who is filled with contradictions. He is a mixture of many emotions. He has a connection to the nature and its beauty. He is absolutely overwhelmed by what he sees, observes and notices. The flashbacks, the memories and the old charm are reminding him that life must move on. Interlaced with poems (written by Rabi himself), the narration gets enough space to move and flow and finally reaches its climax. An ocean of emotions is waiting to be explored for readers reading this masterpiece.

It's strange to state this, as words for me are phantom things that hint at deeper realities, and poetry has always been at the heart of my thinking. Not the mechanics of words and intentions, structure and word play, but the penumbral possibilities that lurk alongside metaphor, cultural clues and organic being.

In the discussion of different concepts of electromagnetism, use of vectors and coordinates systems are unavoidable. Most of the books avoid details of these topics due to scope of the book or the syllabus. Most of the students take it for granted the formulae stated in the book. Some students when try to understand the three dimensional aspects of the coordinate systems they find some confusion. To help student clear their concepts on these aspects and to answer how different readily given expressions are derived we have come forward to write this book. The book starts discussion from very basic definitions of vector terminology and then relates this with the coordinate systems. Most needed coordinate systems are Cartesian, cylindrical and spherical coordinate systems. These systems are discussed from the basic level and culminate into the derivations of the longer expressions. As problems are already available in the books of similar nature authors have not included them in this book. It is hoped that this book would clear most of the concepts needed to study the electromagnetism.

The Integrated Cooperative Development Project (ICDP) was introduced by National Cooperative Development Corporation (NCDC) during 1985-86. This project has been in operation in majority of the districts in India. However, very few attempts have been made to study the impact of this project. The present work analyzed the impact of ICDP and the sustainability of the outcome of the project in Theni district, Tamil Nadu. The project was introduced in Theni district during the year 2005-06 with the total outlay of Rs 987.73 lakhs and the project was completed on 31 March 2011. This study found that ICDP's monetary and non-monetary interventions have created both tangible and intangible impact on the business profile of cooperative societies in this district. As compare to pre-project period with post-project period, the latter witnessed many cooperatives in the district which have become viable entities and could retain their image among the members and other stakeholders through enhanced service, general facelift, and inclusive approach. The books available at present in the field of Cooperation and Cooperatives have not detailed about this Pan India Project of National Cooperative Development Corporation, New Delhi. This book has been written keeping in mind the requirements of both the researchers and the officials with examples for office note/resolutions. (jacket).

Factor Productivity in Textile Industries. 5. Technology and Technical Progress of Textile Industry. 6. Concluding Remarks and Way Ahead. Appendix. References. Index. The economic reforms initiated in 1991 introduced far-reaching measures, which changed the working and machinery of the economy. The reforms have unlocked India's enormous growth potential and unleashed powerful entrepreneurial forces. Indian textile industry, until the economic liberalization of Indian economy was predominantly an unorganized industry. The textile and clothing sector is an important one in the Indian economy. Textiles and clothing sector has been significant in India's export basket as well as largest generator of employment. The economic liberalization of Indian economy in the early 1990s led to stupendous growth of this Indian industry. Further, phasing out of quotas on textiles trade in 2005 on textile exports from India and its competing countries led to increased trade in textiles. An attempt has been made in the book to analyze the impact of trade liberalization and textile policies on growth, factor productivities, sources of productivity growth and technical progress of Indian textile industry during pre- and post-liberalization period and post-MFA regime. It is well intended to study inter and intra-product group growth in the pre- and post-liberalization and post-MFA regime and to estimate partial and total factor productivity. Another important objective is to study and formulate development strategies for the textile industry. This book concludes with some policy measures to make the Indian textiles industry globally competitive for enhancing the exports of textiles and clothing from our country. This book will be useful for students, researchers, and policymakers. (jacket).

Comments on Broader Indian Literature. The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has recently adopted a flexible inflation targeting regime, a hybrid Taylor s rule that in a way recognizes endogenous money supply as a ubiquitous phenomenon. The endogenous money thesis, however, can be an intrinsic part of different theoretical policy perspectives. The dominant perspective that challenges the Taylor s rule, in its purest form, is a post-Keynesian one, though the development of the existing post-Keynesian perspective challenges some of the basic Keynes s insights. The present book, in a rigorous but non-mathematical presentation, makes clear the endogenous money output links that are consistent with Keynes s General Theory-led insights. More specifically, this understanding separates out Keynes s interest rate determination from that of the determination that underlies RBI s inflation targeting. This book in this manner zeroes in on various implicit and explicit controversies that can surround the high versus low interest rate debates. The book is a useful text for senior students of economics as well as the practitioners.

The volume argues that India must take the lead role in establishing ocean management for littoral countries to maintain maritime stability and good order in the Indian Ocean Region (IOR). The volume discusses how maritime sphere of influence has become a dominant factor in global affairs. Ninety per cent of the world's trade travels by sea, major international trade centres and economic powers are located on the coast and thirty six per cent of the world's oceans are encompassed within the exclusive economic zone. There is a strong link between economy and the world's oceans, and hence good order at sea is essential. After end of the Cold War when the liberalization process commenced, India realized the importance of its role in maintaining peace, security and stability in the IOR as a responsible maritime state. Fourteen papers in this volume examine the current and future prospects of maritime stability and good order in the IOR and approach India should adopt.

The pursuit to construct "world-class" universities is an ongoing global obsession across the world, which lays emphasis on the development of competitive higher education and research systems as core national economic approach. The portrayal "world-class" is more contextual rather than absolute, the expression "world-class university" has an irrefutable cachet. There is no solo, clear-cut definition of what organises a world-class university (WCU), but there are few common attributes that majority of the experts point towards. The three attributes stated by Philip Altbach and Jamil Salmi that focus on a high concentration of talent, abundant resources and favourable governance have been widely discussed in writings and practice. Both in developing and developed countries, policymakers and higher education leaders are attempting to identify and outline their desires and plans aimed at achieving global ranking for their university/universities. Despite condemnation of the methodology, the choice of indicators and weightings, and the reliability and quality of data used for comparing performance, the obsession for constructing world-class universities has increased over the period of time. But how much do we really discern or comprehend regarding the ranking systems? What do the rankings really measure? Do rankings measure the quality and help in attaining the broad assignment of higher education? Does the competition as outcome of ranking raise standards? Is the ranking system an apposite instrument to frame higher education policies? This edited volume tries to look at the concept of world-class universities in milieu of different countries of the world and explore their experiences either in existing WCUs or constructing WCU or attempting to create WCU. The country-based chapters show differentiated paths of achievements and their approach towards the concept of WCU.

Aggiungi al carrelloHardcover. Condizione: New. Indo-Pacific, as a single maritime entity, represents more than one-third of world population and four largest economies: US, China, Japan and India. Besides, ten countries of ASEAN are seen as the fastest growing economies in Asia/world and the region is considered to be centre of the Indo-Pacific. Indo-Pacific consists of 38 countries, shares 44 per cent of world surface, hosts 65 per cent of world population, and contributes 62 per cent of world GDP and 46 per cent of world merchandise trade. Convergence/confluence of Indian Ocean and Pacific Ocean is called as Indo-Pacific as a single maritime entity. Major Powers and their allies are trying to synergise these two oceans into a single geo-political construct. Indo-Pacific is the chosen acronym being popularised by US, India and their other maritime partners, like Australia and Japan. This new maritime conundrum of 21st century is meant to counter the growing expansion of China s power and its presence in Indian Ocean. Chinese occupation of islands belonging to other littorals in South China Sea and its open defiance of international law of the sea principles, like freedom of navigation in high seas added greater steam to the US-led campaign against China of which India, Japan, Australia and other countries are willing partners. China s ambitious Belt Road Initiative project and its oceanic component, Maritime Silk Route are raising several issues of geo-political concern to the littoral powers of the two oceans. Against the backdrop of the above bourgeoning developments embracing Indian Ocean and Pacific Ocean, this volume facilitates different stakeholders including policy planners/makers, bureaucrats, naval personnel, statesmen and researchers to know about various issues related to Indo-Pacific.
