Hardcover. Condizione: new. Hardcover. This book is a photographic essay in which classical Indian and Southeast Asian sculptures originating in the first millennium CE are juxtaposed with photographs of cut flowers. The two inhabit very different domains: the flowers are natural organic forms while the sculptures are stone man-…made artifices; the flowers are alive, of the moment, their life span measured in days, whilst the sculptures are very much of the past, inanimate, frozen hundreds of years ago. The flowers display themselves in colourful exuberance while the sculptures, as we have them, are stolidly monochromatic. Paperback. Condizione: new. Paperback. When Alix Cleo Roubaud died at the age of 31, she left behind a profound and deeply personal body of work exploring self-portraiture, life, illness, the body and death. Helene Giannecchini was the curator tasked with sorting through some six hundred photographs, letters, and other written d…ocuments belonging to the artist ahead of a posthumous retrospective held at the Bibliotheque Nationale de France in 2014. But she had never met Alix Cleo Roubaud and this absence is felt keenly through her writing as she treads the boundaries between biography and fiction, life and art. Helene Giannecchini pieces together the fragments that remain of this fleeting but dazzling life, spotlighting the theoretical underpinnings of the photographer's ideas on the double, repetition and drawing out the influences of Wittgenstein and Gertrude Stein on her practice. Just as Alix Cleo Roubaud's art is approached through the notes jotted in her journal, and the material evidence of trial prints and chemical experiments from the darkroom, so too Helene Giannecchini respects the interstices in her account, allowing the blind spots of memory to be. This translation has been occasioned by a new showing of Alix Cleo Roubaud's work alongside that of Francesca Woodman, Shala Miller, Carla Williams and Justine Kurland in a group exhibition curated by Moyra Davey for Galerie Buchholz, New York. Shipping may be from multiple locations in the US or from the UK, depending on stock availability.

Paperback. Condizione: new. Paperback. An Italian naif from the town of Reggio Emilia travels America and his home province, reflecting as he does on the oddity of what he finds. Through his unguarded eyes, the world is revealed in all its fundamental strangeness, pathos and humour. If there are blues to be heard, then this is p…artly because any description or explanation, however successful it may be, is bound to go awry when it is required to pass into another language. At once story and reflection, essay and narrative, this cahier by one of Italy s most eminent translators and translation theorists is a celebration of the space between languages, which both unites and divides us. Paperback. Condizione: new. Paperback. In this cahier, Chevillard addresses important topics like turning fifty, water-closets, an enemy, returns, theories and eyes. Using the first letters of the keyboard as his guide, the author assembles an eclectic medley of reflections and autobiographical experiences. Yet his attempt to su…bject content to the formal order of a French keyboard is twice undermined: through its translation into English, and by the nature of the texts themselves, which demonstrate insistently the power exercised by disorder over writing. the text is complemented by images by the renowned French engraver and artist Philippe Favier. 12 color plates Shipping may be from multiple locations in the US or from the UK, depending on stock availability. Paperback. Condizione: new. Paperback. A highly intelligent girl becomes entranced by the sounds that birds make. In time, this develops into a fascination - an obsession even - with avian communication; as an accomplished neuroscientist, she devotes her life to attempting to unlock the mystery of bird song. What celebrated nove…list Neel Mukherjee explores here is the extent to which communication systems can exert a pull on the human psyche - as well as the costs and dangers that may await the individual who cedes to that pull. Mukherjee's gripping and poignant tale is accompanied by finely-detailed paintings by Chinese artist Lu Chao in which the relation between earth and air, weight and weightlessness, is constantly in question. The Cahiers Series continues its exploration of translation in all its aspects with this new tale by the award-winning novelist Neel Mukherjee. Paperback. Condizione: new. Paperback. The Cahiers Series continues its exploration of translation in all its aspects with this account by retired professor of Russian literature Michael Finke of his fascinating with flight. Deskbound and myopic, ever since his childhood Finke has dreamt of flight. After decades as a university…professor whose secret vice was to spend weekends soaring in lightplanes and gliders, he came across little-studied writings of leading Russian authors of the 1920s who, at the direction of Soviet authorities, engaged aviation as a signal promise of progress in Bolshevik Russia - another dream asking to be translated into reality. The resulting essay allows the literary scholar to meet the flier in an exploration of the sources and meanings of the several dreams inspired by flight. Placed alongside the text are paintings by the British artist Rachael Plummer, paintings which have their own oneiric quality, as airplanes disintegrate into abstraction, and as the offer of an aerial perspective renders landscape almost - but in the end not quite - legible. Shipping may be from multiple locations in the US or from the UK, depending on stock availability.

Paperback. Condizione: new. Paperback. Characteristically fusing essay, poetry and criticism, this cahier by the celebrated Canadian poet and classicist Anne Carson explores the role of silence in translation. Two texts, essay and poem, sit side by side, encouraging the reader to discover the resonances between them. Ranging fro…m Homer through Joan of Arc to Paul Celan, Carson s essay examines how the refusal to translate can sometimes be a form of resistance. In the poem, By Chance the Cycladic People , the order of the lines has been determined by a random number generator. The cahier is illustrated by Lanfranco Quadrio s drawings and gouaches, inspired by his reading of Anne Carson s texts. Densely packed with ideas and experiments in form, Nay Rather offers an opportunity to encounter one of contemporary poetry s most nimble and original minds meditating on the nuances of her craft. Unites two texts by Canadian poet Anne Carson. This title includes an essay on the stakes involved when translation happens and covers works ranging from Homer through Joan of Arc to Paul Celan. It also includes a poem about Cycladic culture in which the order of the lines has been determined by a random number generator. Shipping may be from multiple locations in the US or from the UK, depending on stock availability. Quadrio, Lanfranco (illustratore).

It is a play, and has been performed as such, but there are no characters, no obvious action, and only the deepest possible engagement w…ith Walser s language and personality. The text highlights what Jelinek calls the fundamental fragmentation of Walser's voice, revealing Walser as one of those people who, when they said I , did not mean themselves . At the same time, it shows Jelinek to be a virtuosic reader of classic European writers. Paperback. Condizione: new. Paperback. Writer Kirsty Gunn meditates upon her childhood in New Zealand, revisiting in writing the landscapes she once explored by sight, sound and touch. In the process she uncovers what it is about these wild places in particular the part known as the bush that so moved, challenged, and disturbed…her. Interweaving essay, memoir and narrative, she evokes the ways in which this landscape s very foreignness could also provide refuge to a child, and an escape from the suffocating cultural norms of colonial society. Paperback. Condizione: new. Paperback. In this cahier, American poet Idra Novey explores several notions of translation through two sequences of poems. In the first sequence, 'Letters to C,' she addresses the figure and the words of a writer she has recently translated, Brazilian novelist Clarice Lispector. In the second, 'Regar…ding Marmalade, Cognates, and Visitors,' Novey looks at the connections between language, translation, and the hosting of visitors, including her newborn son. Idra Novey's texts are in conversation with works by the artist Erica Baum - images of books that seem both to invite and resist attempts to read them. Hardcover. Condizione: new. Hardcover. Wandering in and about London, the characters of On Wandsworth Bridge often seem larger than life. Never reduced to stereotypes, though, they develop and come alive with a touching humanity and humour that makes the reader care deeply about their actions and fates. At the heart of Hattie Po…nd's novel is a hero's journey--though that hero has few redeeming features, is wholly unaware of his importance, and ultimately inflicts great harm on those around him. The story's underlying theme builds on C. P. Snow's theory of two cultures--the sciences and the humanities--and explores the dangers of allowing a separation between them. Pond also weaves minor science fiction elements and social satire throughout the novel's structure; amid an otherwise realist novel, for example, we encounter the multiverse and time travel. These are not merely plot mechanisms or purely for comedic effect, however--Pond bases her depictions on existing scientific theories. Presented through delightful dialogue and vivid depiction, the characters of On Wandsworth Bridge will remain with readers long after the last page. Hardcover. Condizione: new. Hardcover. The Cahiers Series continues its exploration of translation in all its aspects with this account by acclaimed novelist Rachel Cusk and her husband artist Siemon Scamell-Katz of themes of arrival, transition, and loss as they represent in their different ways a shared time spent in Greece. T…he experience of the potency and fragility of landscape leads to an examination of the moral ambiguity of human creativity. Questions about representation, reproduction, gender, the meaning of location, and the role of translation in the maintenance of coherence, arise amid the cross-currents of a sensory experience of place and nature. Rachel Cusk's text is partnered - rather than illustrated - by Siemon Scamell-Katz's paintings which create a visual essay of their own. This dialogue between language and image also represents a search for meaning, by two artists whose shared life nonetheless gives way to the autonomy and solitude of the creative act.
