Carmen is recognized as one of the greatest of all 19th century operas. Composed in 1873-1874, it was first performed in Paris at the Opéra-Comique on 3 March 1875 to a libretto by H. Meilhac and L. Halévy after Mérimée under the baton of Adolphe Deloffre (1817-1876).

Mit der sogenannten, unregelmäßig schwarz gedruckt, "black page" (Bd. I, S. 73/73) und der berühmten "marbled page", die in Band III (S. 169/170) tatsächlich aufwendig mit der Marmoriertechnik in rot, gelb und grün gestaltet wurde. Sterne rezipierte auch die Linientheorie ("line of beauty") William Hogarths (1697-1764), indem er im Teil VI plötzlich 5 "tolerable straight line[s]" einfügt (S. 152/153). "Sterne, der sich des Witzes seiner unerwarteten Vorgehensweise bewusst ist, demonstriert, dass nicht nur Figuren und Bewegungen, sondern auch Romane auf Linien reduziert werden können."
