Paperback. Condizione: new. Paperback. Text in Spanish. The Pilgrim Way Project was launched in 1994 when the Ministry of the Environment instructed the Directorate for Nature Management and The Directorate of Cultural Heritage to reconstruct the walk along the old roads to Nidaros (the former name of Trondheim). The work to reopen the old roads has been carried out in close co-operation with the 29 municipalities through which the Pilgrim Way winds. A steady stream of pilgrims flocked to Saint Olav's shrine in Nidaros Cathedral, from around 1050 until 1537, the time of the Reformation. Now, almost 500 years after the introduction of Protestantism saw the end of the pilgrimages, people are again encouraged to wander in the tracks of the pilgrims. The intention of this text is to stimulate interest in an important part of Norwegian history, to encourage outdoor activities and to let people share cultural experiences. Paperback. Condizione: new. Paperback. The rapid development and the increased competition in the labor market make continuing education a necessity for an increasing number of people. Equal opportunities for adults to engage in education are therefore important in order to combat exclusion from the labor market. To increase the provision of equality in opportunity for engagement in education we need to understand the psychological processes involved in participation in education. This report presents results from a European Commission Leonardo da Vinci-supported study of adult education in Great Britain, Norway, and Spain. The purpose of the project was, in a comparative perspective, to analyze psychological processes involved in participation and non-participation in adult education. The study focuses on the scale of participation, both in general and in different types of courses: which groups of adults participate the most, motivational aspects of participation, barriers to learning, conceptions of learning, and perceived benefits of adult education. Presents results from a European Commission Leonardo da Vinci - supported study of adult education in Great Britain, Norway, and Spain. The purpose of this project was, in a comparative perspective, to analyze psychological processes involved in participation and non-participation in adult education. Paperback. Condizione: new. Paperback. Whilst a large number of foreign and state initiated water management systems have failed for various reasons, locally developed water harvesting systems have proven their viability by surviving for hundreds of years. Whilst there has to be some recognition of the geographical limits and some questions asked about the quality of these water supplies, even with these detractors accounted for these systems often remain superior to those imposed by political and private interests, not only in terms of their reliability, but also in terms of their flexibility and more equitable control. This book aims to offer a closer look at local flexible strategies for securing water resources under demanding climatic conditions and during environmental changes. The research dealt with here aims to identify a range of initiatives that have been created by and for members of indigenous communities to address such challenges, such as traditional structures for collecting run-off and rainwater. It poses the questions: How have these strategies been formed and made to operate? What positive and negative lessons can be learned from the interplay between local knowledge, subsistence strategies, and the influx of knowledge and initiatives from the outside? As well as describing the function and social significance of water harvesting systems, a further aim of this book is to highlight the wider political and economic context of local knowledge about water harvesting and its uses, and the impact of contrasting management strategies on social development in the local communities involved. Water harvesting and irrigation systems form an important part of the vast knowledge that indigenous and local populations have of their natural environment. Such knowledge is embedded within complex social organisations, and forms the basis of both formal and important non-formal social networks. Indeed, together with the management of land, the management of water resources frequently provides the basis of social institutions and relationships to which ideas of belonging and community membership are tied.Indeed, water resources, along with other natural resources, comprise not only a vital element of subsistence, but also a vital field of social and political inter-action and practice. Whilst a large number of foreign and state initiated water management systems have failed, locally developed water harvesting systems have proven their viability by surviving for hundreds of years. This book looks at local flexible strategies for securing water resources under demanding climatic conditions and during environmental changes. Paperback. Condizione: new. Paperback. The Norwegian University of Science and Technology hosted a conference on the Anglo-American Middle East in Trondheim 2 to 4 May 2005. A distinguished group of scholars accepted our invitations and gracefully agreed to rewrite their lectures for inclusion in this book. They also easily transcended the, perhaps, narrow theme of the conference, making their papers a sophisticated discussion, by and large, how the different great powers have, not always successfully, tried to control the Middle East. Hence the title of this book, 'Controlling the Uncontrollable'. Edward Ingram compares with a grand sweep the British and the American imperial experience in the Middle East, he notes that too many scholars exaggerate the power of nineteenth-century Great Britain in order to compare it with the present day 'US paramountcy'. Alan Milward is on a different tack, explaining how the oil crisis and oil embargo forced the European Common Market to take a new approach towards the Arabs, in the process cutting loose from the American embrace and laying the foundation for a common EU foreign policy. In his article, Douglas Little deepens our understanding of his concept American Orientalism -- the tendency to dismiss Muslims as backward, decadent and evil -- ending his essay with a withering criticism of George W Bush who has rejected the doctrine of containment in favour of preventive war when invading Iraq, needlessly creating the current imbroglio there. Peter Hahn discusses American-Israeli relations in the period 1945-1961, showing that Israeli and American officials were often at loggerheads on the future of the Jewish state. Rounding off the essays is Mary Ann Heiss' account of key episodes of American oil policy since 1945. Even with the importance of oil, as Heiss explains, the balance of power had by 1974 shifted in favour of the oil producers; that had 'shrewdly divided the Atlantic Alliance, pitting the Western Europeans against both the Americans and each other'. Includes papers which discuss how the different great powers have, not always successfully, tried to control the Middle East. This book compares the British and the American imperial experience in the Middle East. It explains how the oil crisis and oil embargo forced the European Common Market to take a different approach towards the Arabs. Paperback. Condizione: new. Paperback. While the dependability requirements of distributed real-time systems are expanding, there is currently no framework for defining and mapping these requirements into the system design and operation. A method of controlling and achieving the dependability level is real-time monitoring, which measures the degree of requirements fulfilment, relates it to the pre-defined, measurable system-level expectations and dynamically adapts the system, based on quality metrics, risk analysis, cost evaluation, control theory, neural networks, data acquisition and system knowledge management. The book deduces a framework to reveal, define, quantify, measure, analyse, design, implement, test, monitor and enhance dependability (functional and non-functional) requirements of a distributed system with real-time constraints. It is presented how the framework can be applied throughout all life-cycle stages, under varying constraints and with maximised cost effectiveness. An overview of the tools and methodologies applicable has been given and an integrated and generalised architecture for ensuring continuous fulfilment of system requirements, proposed. The framework provides a multilevel specification mechanism to establish the preservation of system requirements. This ensures the correct functioning of system through adaptations at run time. Among the benefits are controlled access and coordinated resource sharing in accordance with service-level agreement policies, multi-stakeholder interest preservation, transparency with respect to location, naming, performance etc., achievement of quality of service on demand, decentralisation, seamless integration of resources and applications, as well as increased predictability. READERSHIP: The intended audience is broad: real time and distributed systems scientists and developers, software engineers, students, quality assurance managers, contractors, users, service providers and all those searching for an alternative approach to handling and ensuring automated control of fulfilment of system requirements. Moreover, those needing a handbook on contract negotiations and a method of tracing operational results back into system requirements of long lived projects with high dependability and integrity demands. While the dependability requirements of distributed real-time systems are expanding, there is currently no framework for defining and mapping these requirements into the system design and operation. Paperback. Condizione: new. Paperback. This publication contains contributions by participants from various parts of the world, sharing the intellectual interest in better understanding common challenges facing higher education. The very concept of quality is a disputed one in higher education, with meanings linked to different streams of demands and to a variety of understandings of what the mission of higher education should be. Changing definitions of quality in education constitutes a very controversial topic that cannot be understood disassociated from the analysis of relatively complex power struggles. The publication discusses perceptions of quality, university rankings and benchmarking with a special focus on teaching and learning in higher education institutions. The participants address questions such as: What are benchmarking procedures really measuring? What is the contribution of university rankings? In what respects do they differ, and what do they present in common? What do we understand by "quality teaching/learning, and what steps are to be taken to maintain high standards? What are good indicators of quality in higher education? How do perceptions of quality differ world-wide?The publication is a result of the 6th International Conference on Universities' Quality Development Under Globalisation, UNIQUAL, organised at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU) in 2009. Hardcover. Condizione: new. Hardcover. Norwegian spring-spawning herring and Northeast Arctic cod are two of the largest and commercially most important fish stocks in the North Atlantic. Both these stocks have their spawning fields at the Norwegian coast and they have been the major target species for Norwegian fisheries for a millennium. They are also among the few fish stocks in the world which have been systematically investigated and monitored for more than a century. The scientific results arrived at early in the century for these two stocks, formed the basis for much of the development in international fisheries science later on. This book describes how fisheries, fisheries science and management for Norwegian spring-spawning herring and Northeast Arctic cod developed during the 20th century. Both populations had serious declines in stock size and yield due to overfishing. The herring stock was in a state of collapse for about 20 years. Management measures introduced during the two-three last decades made both stocks recover in the 1990s. Paperback. Condizione: new. Paperback. Virtual worlds are increasingly incorporated into modern universities and teaching pedagogy. Over 190 higher education institutions world-wide have done teaching in the virtual world of Second Life (SL). This book is based on the first Scandinavian project to experiment with the design and testing of teaching platforms for life long learning in SL. In 2007 it created a virtual island or "sim" in SL called "Kamimo Education Island". The project generated a number of courses taught in Second Life, and instructed educators in the use of SL. This book disseminates the experiences and lessons learned in that project and from other educational projects in SL. The book identifies the gaps in traditional forms of education. It provides a roadmap on issues of: instructional design, learner modelling, building simulations, exploring alternatives to design and integrating tools in education with other learning systems. Paperback. Condizione: new. Paperback. The deep integration of technology in our modern society forces us to rethink the relationship humans have to their surroundings. The rise of complex sociotechnical systems denotes how humans and technology have entered a symbiotic relationship where the co-ordinated and fluent interaction between us and technology is a crucial condition for modern societies to function. The disharmony in the relationship between humans and technology has immediate and serious consequences. Accidents and failed operations in transport, incomprehensible user interfaces, and failure to learn from experience are all examples from everyday life suggesting that the understanding of human-technology relationships is not sufficient. This book investigates how humans relate to technology in our modern society, and how our basic assumption of human thought and behaviour guide our efforts to improve and control technology. The fact is that the skilled use of technology in expert systems and everyday life challenges the traditional conception of humans and technology as two separate elements in the analysis of work. This book shows how this dualism is evident and problematic in a wide range of areas, such as investigation of human error in accidents, case studies of innovative interface solutions, simulator training strategies, analysis of work practices in complex systems, and traffic safety research. This book is written for researchers, students and professionals, to supplement the ongoing effort to understand how technology can be integrated with more confidence in modern society. The deep integration of technology in our modern society forces us to rethink the relationship humans have to their surroundings. This book investigates how humans relate to technology in our modern society, and how our basic assumption of human thought and behaviour guide our efforts to improve and control technology. Paperback. Condizione: new. Paperback. Few textbooks offer a comprehensive overview of geographic information systems (GIS) today. The literature common in academic circles is highly technical and pays little attention to the role GIS plays, and has played, as a tool in the planning and shaping of society and the world around us. The authors of this book feel strongly about the potential inherent in the concepts and methodologies that make up a geographic information system. Similarly, the authors are aware of the limitations of the uniformly technical and structural approach that dominates discussions about GIS in many professional circles. The authors' ambition with this book is to guide the reader on an educational, easy-to-understand journey that introduces the concepts and methodologies that lie behind todays geographic information systems. Their goal is thus to make GIS both more familiar and relevant to a far broader section of the professional circles who plan, organise and shape our surroundings. Guides the reader on an educational journey that introduces the concepts and methodologies that lie behind geographic information systems.
