Paperback. Condizione: Very Good. The EY Exhibition: Impressionists in London: French Artists in Exile charts the story of the French artists who took refuge in London during and after the devastating Franco-Prussian War and the Paris Commune. Following these traumatic events there was a creative flourishing in London as the exi…les responded to British culture and social life -regattas, processions, parks, and of course the Thames. Many artists returned to France after the Entente Cordiale in 1904, which in the case of the impressionists in general and Monet in particular, marked the culmination of an artistic project initiated in exile. New texts from a range of leading writers draw out key figures and events from this remarkable period, revealing the artists' connections with patrons, art dealers and British artists, and considering both the contribution they made to British art and art education and the impact their cross-Channel experiences had on French art. Lavishly illustrated throughout with over 170 beautiful works (including drawing and sculpture as well as painting), this significant and timely book shows us London seen through French eyes and illuminates a key period in this enduringly popular movement. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged.

Paperback. Condizione: Very Good. A revelatory behind-the-scenes look at the work of Britain's best-loved illustrator Quentin Blake, providing an insight by the artist himself into his own practice and some of his most famous collaborations. Pens Ink & Places is a wonderful new publication from the inimitable Quentin Blake, cont…aining a wealth of new material, ranging from touching series of vignettes for Great Ormond Street Hospital to gigantic drawings for the Jerwood Gallery in Hastings (now Hastings Contemporary); from the sombre apocalyptic landscapes of Riddley Walker to the energetic fantasy of Billy and the Minpins. This beautiful volume also includes Blake's unique illustrations made to accompany the works of John Ruskin, La Fontaine, Lucius Apuleius and Beatrix Potter. Blake's commentary straight, as it were, from the drawing board explores the challenges and opportunities in the creation of drawings known around the world, as well as others seen here for the first time. It is clear from every page of this informative and richly illustrated volume that there has been no slackening of brio in the scratchy pen nib of an artist who has been called the 'Godfather of Illustration'. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged.

Paperback. Condizione: Very Good. Stanley Spencer is best-known for two things: his immortalization of Cookham, the Berkshire village where he was born and lived for most of his life; and his celebration of sex both in his painted works and in his unconventional attitude to relationships. This book shows how Spencer's work grew…out of places, experiences and social relations aiming to enrich his visionary imagination by illuminating the groundedness in landscapes, homes and human relationships that he felt so strongly. Paperback. Condizione: Very Good. I have always loved painting and scenery. The connection between the British landscape seen by all of us with the naked eye and the same landscape seen through the eyes of artists, musicians and writers is fascinating. In A Picture of Britain I will be exploring these links and looking at their…impact on our national character, seeking out the countryside we admire and the reasons we cherish it.? David Dimbleby Accompanying a major new BBC One series presented by David Dimbleby and an important exhibition at Tate Britain, A Picture of Britain is a celebration of the British landscape and the art that it has inspired, from Constable to Lowry, from Turner to Nash. Written by David Dimbleby and leading experts on British art from Tate, it is beautifully illustrated with landscape photography and great works of art. From the slopes of Snowdonia to the industrial Black Country. from the grandeur of the Scottish Highlands to the meadows of Suffolk, the British landscape has inspired artists and writers for generations. But the authors show that it is only in the last two hundred years, stirred by art and poetry, that large numbers of people have sought out and visited wilder and more rugged vistas. In paintings, photographs and words, this remarkable book captures our rich cultural heritage, creating for the reader A Picture of Britain. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged.

Paperback. Condizione: Very Good. A society of young artists and writers, the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood was founded in London in 1848. They were known for controversially rebelling against the classical academic painting conventions of the day in favour of a meeting of medieval romanticism and a new realism, and were inspired b…y theories of John Ruskin who urged artists to 'go to nature', resulting in subject matter predominantly dealing with religious themes, love, death, and subjects from literature and poetry. The principal members of the group were William Holman Hunt, John Everett Millais, and Dante Gabriel Rossetti who all produced seminal and well-loved paintings such as "The Awakening Conscience" (1853), "Ophelia" (1851-2) and "The Beloved" (1855-6) respectively. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged.

Paperback. Condizione: Good. One of a series exploring the life and work of major artists associated with St Ives, this study of Alfred Wallis (1855-1942) sets out to revise previous accounts of his life in the light of new research. It also discusses the gradual development of his painting over 17 years of activity. Wallis spen…t most of his life in the Cornish ports of Newlyn, Penzance and St Ives, and went to sea as a young man. His main occupation was as a dealer in marine supplies, and it was only at the age of 70, and after the death of his wife, that he took up painting "for company". He sold his works for a few pence to anyone who wanted them, and died in the poorhouse near Penzance. He is now recognized as one of the most original British artists of the 20th century. After his encounter with Ben Nicholson and Christopher Wood in St Ives in 1928, his pictures of boats and harbours, produced on odd-shaped boards with the use of ordinary ship's paint, were an inspiration to artists seeking a new approach. The directness of his "primitive" vision and the object-like quality of his paintings were highly influential in the development of British Modernism. The book discusses the mythology that quickly grew up around Wallis's life, and at the sustained interest in an irascible eccentric whose work affected a whole generation of British artists. The book has been read but remains in clean condition. All pages are intact and the cover is intact. Some minor wear to the spine.
