Aggiungi al carrelloPaperback. Condizione: Very Good. Art historian, collector, museum director and broadcaster, Kenneth Clark was one of the leading cultural figures in Britain in the midtwentieth century. Accompanying a major exhibition, this book considers all aspects of his life and work, including his television career that climaxed in the landmark series 'Civilisation'. Particular emphasis is placed on Clark's support of, and influence upon, the art of his time. As director of the National Gallery he oversaw the relocation of the collection during the Second World War. He chaired the pioneering War Artists Advisory Committee, and persauded the government not to conscript artists - Henry Moore was one such artist who greatly benefited from Clark's support. After the war he resigned his directorship to concentrate on writing, in 1954 was co-founder of the broadcasting company that was to become ITV, and chaired the Arts Council from 1955 to 1960. A passionate advocate of art being made accessible to all, in 1969 Clark wrote and presented 'Civilisation' for the BBC, distilling the history of Western philosophy, culture and art into thirteen groundbreaking episodes. After a period of neglect, there is now considerable interest in Clark among academics, publishers and broadcasters. As well as providing new research and information on Clark, the book is a significant intervention into histories of modern British art. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Movements in Modern Art seriesAccessible introductions to the most important and influential art movements of the twentieth century; Each book includes illustrations of major works from collections around the world; Expert authors write for a general readership The term Abstract Expressionism, though coined by critics and resisted by some of the artists involved, has come to signify the fascinating body of work made by American artists in post-war New York, mainly between 1947 and 1953. Artists including Jackson Pollock, Mark Rothko, Clyfford Still, Barnett Newman, Lee Krasner and Willem de Kooning created large-scale canvases that revitalised contemporary art in America. Although inspired to some extent by the Surrealists and by European abstract painting, Abstract Expressionism was hailed as the first truly American modern art movement, and was in turn to have enormous influence on the activities of artists in Europe. An epilogue explains the critical critical reception of Abstract Expressionism at the time up until the present day in both the United States and abroad. Aggiungi al carrelloPaperback. Condizione: Very Good. This volume forms part of Tate Publishing's Modern Artists monographs. In a career spanning five decades, Peter Blake has established himself as one of the most influential and original artists working in Britain. Coming to prominence in the late 1950s and 60s his deployment of popular culture icons and consumer goods in his work earned him the title of 'father of pop'. His continued engagement with the technique of collage gave rise to one of the most iconic images of the 1960s, the cover he designed for The Beatles' @Sgt Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band'. Preferring to work outside of art world trends, Blake has instinctively drawn from his own life experience to produce work that unabashedly celebrates sentimental themes such as love, magic and nostalgia. A revelatory behind-the-scenes look at the work of Britain's best-loved illustrator Quentin Blake, providing an insight by the artist himself into his own practice and some of his most famous collaborations. Pens Ink & Places is a wonderful new publication from the inimitable Quentin Blake, containing a wealth of new material, ranging from touching series of vignettes for Great Ormond Street Hospital to gigantic drawings for the Jerwood Gallery in Hastings (now Hastings Contemporary); from the sombre apocalyptic landscapes of Riddley Walker to the energetic fantasy of Billy and the Minpins. This beautiful volume also includes Blake's unique illustrations made to accompany the works of John Ruskin, La Fontaine, Lucius Apuleius and Beatrix Potter. Blake's commentary straight, as it were, from the drawing board explores the challenges and opportunities in the creation of drawings known around the world, as well as others seen here for the first time. Aggiungi al carrelloPaperback. Condizione: Very Good. Samuel Palmer (1805-1881) is one of the best loved, but least understood, figures in British art. The bulk of his most original work was produced before he reached the age of thirty, but he continued to paint until his death in 1881. A romantic at heart, he lived on through most of the Victorian age, increasingly at odds with the world around him, yet sustained by the belief and the abiding values of beauty, of poetry and of landscape. This book is the first to examine critically Palmer's career, and to present his work within the artistic and cultural context of his times. It explores the visual and literary sources of his early pastoral drawings, and examines the tensions which lay behnd the apparently idlyllic representations of the Kent village of Shoreham, where he lived from 1828 to 1835. The later part of Palmer's career is discussed against the background of his struggle for recognition. It reveals the role played by critics in shaping the reception of his work, and the importance of the various societies he joined in giving his individual vision credibility and support. Sometimes seen as bland and conventional, Palmer's later works engage with many of the most burning cont. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Aggiungi al carrelloPaperback. Condizione: Very Good. Award-winning artist and illustrator Sara Fanelli is one of the world's foremost illustrators, renowned for her experimental techniques that have spawned many imitators. Her unique contribution to book illustration is evident in such memorable books as "Dear Diary" ('one of the most extraordinary picture books ever devised' - "The independent"; 'an eccentric masterpiece' - "The Guardian"), "Mythological Monsters" ('a model of artistic engagement' - "Kirkus Reviews") and "My Map Book" ('an exhilarating and liberating book for all' - "The Guardian"). More recently she illustrated "The New Faber Book of Children's Verse and Pinocchio" (for the cover of which she was awarded first prize in the V&A Illustration Awards). Fanelli's inspiration lies not only in the visual arts but also in literature and the theatre. "Sometimes I Think, Sometimes I Am" is a remarkable creation by the artist, in which Fanelli takes the quotations and aphorisms that inspire her work, from Dante and Goethe to Calvino and Beckett, and places them in the context of a completely original artistic creation - sketchbooks, collages, paintings and drawings - at the heart of which lies a beautiful miniature book-within-a-book. The book opens with a newly commissioned text from Steven Heller, while Marina Warner introduces each of the five 'chapters' - 'Devils and Angels', 'Love', 'Colour', 'Myth' and 'The Absurd' - that make up this unique work. This is a book that will be enjoyed by anyone alert to the possibilities of what a book can be. It will be treasured, collected and marvelled at for years to come. Aggiungi al carrelloPaperback. Condizione: Very Good. I have always loved painting and scenery. The connection between the British landscape seen by all of us with the naked eye and the same landscape seen through the eyes of artists, musicians and writers is fascinating. In A Picture of Britain I will be exploring these links and looking at their impact on our national character, seeking out the countryside we admire and the reasons we cherish it.? David Dimbleby Accompanying a major new BBC One series presented by David Dimbleby and an important exhibition at Tate Britain, A Picture of Britain is a celebration of the British landscape and the art that it has inspired, from Constable to Lowry, from Turner to Nash. Written by David Dimbleby and leading experts on British art from Tate, it is beautifully illustrated with landscape photography and great works of art. From the slopes of Snowdonia to the industrial Black Country. from the grandeur of the Scottish Highlands to the meadows of Suffolk, the British landscape has inspired artists and writers for generations. But the authors show that it is only in the last two hundred years, stirred by art and poetry, that large numbers of people have sought out and visited wilder and more rugged vistas. In paintings, photographs and words, this remarkable book captures our rich cultural heritage, creating for the reader A Picture of Britain. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Aggiungi al carrelloPaperback. Condizione: Very Good. This work looks at the art of Thomas Gainsborough, widely acknowledged as one of the great masters of the 18th century. Published to accompany a major exhibition at the Tate Britain the text aims to demonstrate the sheer range, quality and originality of this artist's work. It intends to present a new angle of the artist, exploring his studio practice and innovative use of colour as well as highlighting the inventiveness and complexity of his techniques. Gainsborough shunned the theory-led practice of the Royal Academy in preference for an art based on pleasure over convention, this volume draws on the view that his work has a continuing significance for British culture today.
