Paperback. Condizione: new. Paperback. It espouses Rousseau's theory on power & philosophical doctrine by delving into what he viewed as the best way to establish a political community in the face of the problems of commercial society, which he had already identified in his Discourse on Inequality (1754). The Social Contract helped inspire political reforms or revolutions in Europe, especially in France. It argued against the idea that monarchs were divinely empowered to legislate. Rousseau asserts that only the people, who are sovereign, have that all-powerful right. In The Social Contract (1762) Rousseau argues that laws are binding only when they are supported by the general will of the people. When people aren't abiding the general will and they are "forced to be free", this wasn't advocating totalitarianism. The general will is laws that are accepted as just and those who don't follow the general will are breaking the law. Rousseau is advocating to force people to follow the law because it is in everyone's best interest to do so. Paperback. Condizione: new. Paperback. Los consejos de este sabio sobre la discrecion, la necedad de quejarse, el autocontrol, el buen gusto y el arte del disimulo resultan asombrosamente modernos.ENGLISH DESCRIPTIONA guide that will inspire anyone who wishes to direct their life boldly and strategically in an increasingly competitive and hostile world. Baltasar Gracian y Morales, better known as Baltasar Gracian, was a Spanish Jesuit and philosopher. Gracian's style, generically called conceptism, is characterized by ellipsis and the concentration of a maximum of significance in a minimum of form, an approach referred to in Spanish as agudeza (wit), and which is brought to its extreme in The Art of Prudence or The art of governing oneself which is almost entirely composed of three hundred maxims with commentary. He constantly plays with words: each phrase becomes a puzzle, using the most diverse rhetorical devices. His writings were lauded by Schopenhauer and Nietzsche. They have transformed the way we see ourselves and others. They have inspired debate, discord, war, and revolutions. They have illuminated, outraged, provoked, and comforted. They have enriched lives, but they have also destroyed them. Taurus publishes the works of great thinkers, pioneers, radicals, and visionaries, whose ideas shocked civilizations and pushed us to be who we are. How can we be happy and free despite lifes hardships? In this masterpiece of stoic thinking, also known as the Enchiridion, Epictetus invites us to focus on controlling nothing but what is up to us and accept what comes from external forces. With practical and everyday examples, the book summarizes the principles of stoicism, a philosophical current that searches for a serenity of spirit, a current of which, along with Marcus Aurelius and Seneca, Epictetus is the topmost representative. Paperback. Condizione: new. Paperback. Entonces no caminen, hagan otra cosa: rueden, deslicense, vuelen.ENGLISH DESCRIPTIONThis passionate affirmation of the simple life, and joy in simple things explores how walking influenced historys greatest thinkersfrom Henry David Thoreau and Jack Kerouac to Gandhi and Nietzsche (Observer). In this French bestseller, leading thinker and philosopher Frederic Gros charts the many different ways we get from A to Bthe pilgrimage, the promenade, the protest march, the nature rambleand reveals what they say about us.Gros draws attention to other thinkers who also saw walking as something central to their practice. On his travels he ponders Thoreaus eager seclusion in Walden Woods; the reason Rimbaud walked in a fury, while Nerval rambled to cure his melancholy. He shows us how Rousseau walked in order to think, while Nietzsche wandered the mountainside to write. In contrast, Kant marched through his hometown every day, exactly at the same hour, to escape the compulsion of thought. Brilliant and erudite, A Philosophy of Walking is an entertaining and insightful manifesto for putting one foot in front of the other. Hardcover. Condizione: new. Hardcover. In 1944, the European Zionist current was about to achieve the objective of founding its own State in Palestinian territory. Many intellectuals participated in its planning, among them Hannah Arendt, who elaborated a brief study about the viability of the project, leaning in favor of creating the State of Israel, though with certain reservations: this settlement should not be built without establishing clear conditions, due to the dangers that it could disembogue in a curtailed and hostile interaction. She also warned that the United States might try to take advantage of the situation to get hold of the regions oil. On Palestine harbors a fateful premonition that had been kept unpublished till today. In both the prologue and the epilogue, philosopher Thomas Meyer gives account of the context of the manuscript by this Jewish thinker and why it was never published, aside from the pressure by Zionist support committees. This volume also includes the memorandum entitled The Problem of Palestinian Refugees, written by several authors in 1958featuring, to her disgust, Hannah Arendtand published by the Institute for Mediterranean Affairs, a study in the form of an enlightening catalogue of issues regarding the Palestinian conflict, written ten years after the State of Israel became a reality, in the way Arendt had feared and predicted. Paperback. Condizione: new. Paperback. An original reflection on shame as the central feeling of our age - the expression of an anger that is the necessary condition for new struggles. Can shame become a source of political strength? Faced with injustice, growing inequality and systemic violence, we cry out in shame. We feel ashamed of obscene wealth amid wider deprivation. We feel ashamed of humanity for its ruthless and relentless exploitation of the earth. We feel ashamed of the racism and sexism that permeate society and our everyday lives. This difficult emotion is not just sadness or a withdrawal into oneself, nor is it a paralysing sense of inadequacy. As Frederic Gros argues in A Philosophy of Shame, it arises when our perception of reality rejects passivity and resignation and instead embraces imagination. Shame thus becomes the expression of an anger that is a powerful, transformative force -one that assumes a radical character. In dialogue with authors such as Primo Levi, Annie Ernaux, Virginie Despentes and James Baldwin, Gros explores a concept that is still little understood in its anthropological, moral, psychological and political depths. Shame is a revolutionary sentiment because it lies at the foundation of any path of subjective recognition, transformation and struggle. Paperback. Condizione: new. Paperback. We are a nation born from the conviction that people must be free. But since the middle of the last century, that idea has been co-opted. Forces on the political Right have justified exploitation by cloaking it in the rhetoric of freedom, leading to pharmaceutical companies freely overcharging for medication, a Big Tech free from oversight, politicians free to incite rebellion, corporations free to pollute, and more. How did we get here? Whose freedom are weand should webe thinking about? In The Road to Freedom, Nobel prize winner Joseph E. Stiglitz dissects Americas current economic system and the political ideology that created it, laying bare their twinned failure. Free and unfettered markets have only succeeded in delivering a series of crises: the financial crisis, the opioid crisis, and the crisis of inequality. While a small portion of the population has amassed considerable wealth, wages for most people have stagnated. Free and unfettered markets have exploited consumers, workers, and the environment alike. Such failures have fed populist movements that believe being free means abandoning any obligations citizens have to one another. As they grow in strength, these movements now pose a real threat to true economic and political freedom. As an economic advisor to presidents and as chief economist at the World Bank, Stiglitz has witnessed these profound changes firsthand. As he argues, the failures follow from the elites unshakeable dedication to the neoliberal experiment. Explicitly taking on giants such as Friedrich Hayek and Milton Friedman, Stiglitz exposes accepted ideas about our political and economic life for what they are: twisted visions that tear at the social fabric while they enrich the very few.The Road to Freedom breaks new ground, showing how economicsincluding recent advances in which Stiglitz has played such an important rolereframes how to think about freedom and the role of the state in a twenty-first century society. Paperback. Condizione: new. Paperback. OF THE YEAR, 2023: The Washington Post, The New Yorker, Lit Hub "Enthralling." The Wall Street Journal In this spellbinding portrait of obsession and flawed genius, the best-selling author of The Stranger in the Woods brings us into Breitwiesers strange worldunlike most thieves, he never stole for money, keeping all his treasures in a single room where he could admire them. For centuries, works of art have been stolen in countless ways from all over the world, but no one has been quite as successful at it as the master thief Stephane Breitwieser. Carrying out more than two hundred heists over nearly eight yearsin museums and cathedrals all over EuropeBreitwieser, along with his girlfriend who worked as his lookout, stole more than three hundred objects, until it all fell apart in spectacular fashion. In The Art Thief, Michael Finkel brings us into Breitwiesers strange and fascinating world. Unlike most thieves, Breitwieser never stole for money. Instead, he displayed all his treasures in a pair of secret rooms where he could admire them to his hearts content. Possessed of a remarkable athleticism and an innate ability to circumvent practically any security system, Breitwieser managed to pull off a breathtaking number of audacious thefts. Yet these strange talents bred a growing disregard for risk and an addicts need to score, leading Breitwieser to ignore his girlfriends pleas to stopuntil one final act of hubris brought everything crashing down. This is a riveting story of art, crime, love, and an insatiable hunger to possess beauty at any cost. Shipping may be from multiple locations in the US or from the UK, depending on stock availability.
