Paperback. Condizione: Very Good. Choosing an easy life as an anaesthetist over the cut and thrust of art college, Steve Yentis has been drawing medical cartoons, whilst waiting for surgeons to turn up or his regional blocks to work, for the last 20 years. This collection of drawings represents a wry look at life in the operating theatre, wards and clinic, as seen from the Head End, which is, of course, by far the more important end. Appealing to anyone who has ever worked in a hospital, this book will help pass the time during those long periods of inactivity between audit meetings. Exam candidates in particular will find it contributes absolutely nothing to their chances of success. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged.

Paperback. Condizione: Very Good. This book is a succinct set of notes in a question and answer format covering the fundamental principles of surgery. It is aimed at anyone who works in a surgical speciality, not only surgeons, but also nurses, operating department assistants, assistants in surgical practice, trainee surgeons, junior doctors, dentists, podiatrists and medical students of all surgically-oriented disciplines. Many facts and principles are important to those who work in a surgical field, but there is no single unifying book that has covered all the basic, essential material that EVERYONE should know, regardless of their discipline. Equally, many of the existing surgical principle books are written purely for surgeons and, of course, eighty percent of their content is relevant only to surgeons and medical students, and not the wider audience. There is a lot of redundancy, not to mention expense, in reading these books. As well as surgeons, there is a large group of people who work in surgery who need to know the answers to such things, for example: How the sizing system for needles works? How does diathermy work? Why do we wear gloves? What types of suture materials are available? How do wounds heal? This book is equally relevant to postgraduate surgeons, especially with the reorganisation in surgical training becoming ever more prevalent. It is now even more essential to have a firm grasp of the fundamental principles of surgery before specialising into one of today's surgical disciplines. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged.

Paperback. Condizione: Very Good. It is now 50 years since the Formula 1 World Championship was created. This book celebrates the involvement of British drivers during those five decades of racing. It is a unique work in that it provides a detailed record of the achievements of every British driver ever to start a Grand Prix. In all, 137 British drivers have started Grand Prix and this book records every one of them. From the world famous names like Stirling Moss, Jackie Stewart and Damon Hill, to the less well-known racers of the 50s, 60s, 70s and 80s, this is a unique and definitive record. A driver summary, detailed career record and Grand Prix statistics are included for each of the 137 drivers. Illustrated by many rare photos covering most of the drivers, the book is a wonderful record of a period of British involvement in Grand Prix racing that started with drivers like Reg Parnell and Bob Gerard and ended with Damon Hill, Eddie Irvine and David Coulthard. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged.

Paperback. Condizione: new. Paperback. Although prostate cancer is rare in men before the age of 40, it may be present in 20% of men by the age of 50 and in about 80% by the age of 80. However, in many cases it does not cause any symptoms and remains clinically undetected, with death occurring due to other, unrelated, causes. Most prostate cancers are quite slow growing, although in some men - for reasons that remain unclear - they can progress more rapidly. The causes of prostate cancer are not yet understood, but it is known to have an ethnic association. There is also evidence that it has a genetic basis - men with a first-degree relative with prostate cancer being at greater than normal risk of developing the disease. This book provides up-to-date, clear explanations of what is currently known about prostate cancer. It describes the treatments that are available, as well as the different types of complementary therapies, and discusses possible risk factors and the potential role of diet in the development of the disease. Shipping may be from multiple locations in the US or from the UK, depending on stock availability.

Paperback. Condizione: new. Paperback. Several studies have looked at populations of volunteers, women from the electoral roll and women attending general practices, and have reported the ultrasound appearance of polycystic ovaries in as many as one in three to one in five. If groups of women with irregular periods are looked at, up to 90% will have polycystic ovaries at ultrasound. Similarly, when women with increased facial and body hair are screened, about 90% will have polycystic ovaries, as will three out of four women with acne. It has also been suggested by some studies that women with recurrent miscarriage or early pregnancy loss after in-vitro fertilization have an increased incidence of polycystic ovaries. However, not all studies support this hypothesis, and additional research is needed to evaluate this further. This book looks at the historical background of this condition; the structure and function of the female genital organs; symptoms and signs; diagnostic techniques; the inheritance of polycystic ovary syndrome; long-term effects; lifestyle factors; polycystic ovaries and the skin; ovulation induction; surgical treatment to induce ovulation; in-vitro fertilization; pregnancy outcomes. Paperback. Condizione: new. Paperback. David Gray is a disillusioned surgeon approaching retirement. One night, on the way home from an emergency aneurysm repair, he has a car crash and meets the spirit of the patient he's just operated on - a man called Alf Angel. Alf, a simple and straightforward character, becomes Gray's guardian and travelling companion on a fantastic journey through time. They visit scenes from Gray's formative years as a young medic, before moving further back in time to learn something of the early trials and tribulations of scientific surgery. Through it all, Gray earnestly seeks the worth of his calling as a doctor and surgeon and ultimately, the nature and meaning of life itself.Dead Medics' Society is a short novella told in a tongue-in-cheek style using a mixture of amusing whimsy and, at times, profound insight into the minds of men who wield scalpels for a living. Although this short tale is clearly fiction, the historical figures and operations depicted are real, though the characterisation is down to poetic licence. Read it and wonder. Paperback. Condizione: new. Paperback. Evgeniy Perelygin - a surgeon who is known to his friends as Perya - has managed to capture the funny, the amusing, and the ridiculous aspects of what surgeons do and think. Yes, surgeons take their profession very seriously and their patients even more so. But, what is true in any aspect of human life is also true for surgery - there is always something to laugh about, or even ridicule. And this includes, above all, surgeons themselves! In each of these cartoons lurks the kernel of a basic surgical truth. This truth has been blown up, distorted, and exaggerated, but remains at the heart of the picture. Each picture has a legend describing the situation, which is followed by an aphorism, quote, or comment. This book is essentially for surgical eyes - they are all cutting edge, and will have the reader in stitches. Readers may also wish to use the images to enliven PowerPoint lectures! The Editor, Moshe Schein, is a surgeon, and author of many publications, some of which have contributed cartoons and comments to this book."So stop taking yourself so seriously, do not be afraid to laugh or make others laugh. If anyone does not appreciate your humor, he/she can kiss your ass! A life without a sense of humor has no sense at all." Paperback. Condizione: new. Paperback. This book approaches IBS from a new and exciting viewpoint - that of coping with IBS using concepts and skills based on the individual's own psychological profile. Although we know more about IBS than ever before, medical treatment alone is ineffective for many people with IBS, who are often left to cope with IBS as best they can. This book discusses the intricate way in which the mind/brain and body interact, in producing a different "IBS experience" for each person. As well as covering more traditional areas such as stress, anxiety and depression, the authors discuss the ways in which a chronic illness such as IBS might affect memory and IQ. The role of shame and embarrassment, attitudes and beliefs, are also discussed in relation to chronic illness in general and IBS in particular. The book will be invaluable to anyone suffering from IBS (or their friends and relatives!), to gain a greater insight into this embarrassing and painful condition. It shows how sufferers can reduce the impact which their symptoms have on their day-to-day lives.Doctors, nurses and other health professionals will gain a greater understanding of this disorder, as complex psychological constructs are explained simply and with the aid of diagrams, questionnaires, and summaries of the latest research relating to chronic illness. The different ways people experience IBS are illustrated by accounts given by people suffering from the illness. Paperback. Condizione: new. Paperback. "Moshe Schein's life as a surgeon on four continents and his skills as a storyteller make for compelling reading." Abraham Verghese, Author of Cutting for Stone and The Covenant of WaterThis is a story of a 50-year-long surgical life, across four continents, and numerous hospitals - academic, community, and rural - in a few countries. Unlike the typical memoirs of surgeons, glorifying their accomplishments and paying tribute to our noble profession, this memoir is different: it's not written by a surgical 'giant' or a famous scientific innovator; it doesn't tell the story of a surgical Paganini but rather of a surgical workhorse. It portrays a surgical career in the trenches, as it is, in stark colors, warts and all - topics that others prefer not to write or speak about - complications, malpractice, medical politics, and intrigue. Although 'surgical' is its claim to fame, this memoir is aimed not only at surgeons or medical practitioners. Whenever possible, the author portrays events and persons against a background and perspective of the various times and places. The General Surgeon pays tribute to the author's brothers in the trenches - the humble, run-of-the-mill general surgeons worldwide. Paperback. Condizione: new. Paperback. This remarkable book is long overdue. It provides the insights essential for the lay reader to take personal control of their long-term health, and physical and emotional well-being. It empowers and educates the non-doctor like no book before it. The complexities and limitations of both modern medicine and alternative therapies, are explained in a way that is entertaining and easy to understand. More importantly however, the book provides access to state-of-the-art advice, not only for effective diet and weight control, but also for side-stepping Syndrome X and the other common serious illnesses, that confront all of us in the new millennium. Using a patient-centred and evidence-based approach, it reflects the dramatic changes in the way medical care will be delivered in the future, i.e. as an equal and mutually respectful partnership between well-informed patient and hopefully, well-informed doctor.Although written to provide the perfect medical advice manual for the lay public, the book is an excellent source of current medical knowledge, relating to the common diseases, and provokes and challenges in such a way, that would expect it to be widely read by the profession at large. Paperback. Condizione: new. Paperback. For nearly 25 years, the Catchpole cartoon was a hugely popular feature in Autosport magazine. Every week, Catchpole and his friends passed comment on events in motor sport through the skill and humour of artist Barry Foley. Now, Catchpole is back, with the publication of this collection of nearly 400 cartoons as printed in Autosport between 1970 and 1994. This rich collection of quotations, spanning multiple millennia from the ancient epochs to the contemporary era, is comprised of over five hundred inspirational thoughts and universal ideals enduringly coupled to the art, science, and philosophy of medical practice. These selected quotations encompass a wide breadth of keen observations and aphorisms directly linked to the history, grounding principles, and fundamental theories of medicine and surgery. The quotations in this volume have been drawn from past generations of legendary physicians and intrepid explorers of medical science as well as distinguished anatomists, physiologists, philosophers, writers, artists, and statesmen. The reader will ponder logical precepts, universal truths, and cogent words of guidance from ancient physicians and philosophers such as Hippocrates, Aristotle, and Socrates as well as be offered sage counsel from giants of medical history including Armand Trousseau, Sir William Osler, and Michael DeBakey, among many others. Additionally, the reader will hear the poignant words of world-renowned medical scientists such as Claude Bernard, Jonas Salk, and Marie Curie. There are also enlightening tenets from celebrated Renaissance men, scientists, and innovators including Leonardo da Vinci, Sir Isaac Newton, and Albert Einstein. This unique collection of motivational quotes substantively addresses the pursuit of success in medical practice. Consider these quotations a daily dose of inspiration regardless of the particular discipline or specialty of medicine you have chosen to pursue. These quotations have the capacity to bring into clear focus the fundamentals and principles that are illustrative of sound medical practice, empathetic patient care, and humble professionalism. These thoughts are cognitively stimulating to ponder and at times are refreshingly witty and even humorous. Paperback. Condizione: new. Paperback. This book is about the science of medicine and the men and women who advanced the knowledge and treatment of disease. History is driven by individuals and by their urge to make their ideas known. Medicine is unique, because these ideas benefit the sick. Physicians who render treatment and patients who receive it, give little thought to those whose ideas made it all possible and who frequently derived no commercial gains. This book refers to the origin of some of these ideas. It attempts to relate, in brief chapters, the travails, the successes and the disappointments of some of those who pioneered these advances. The book is not intended as reference material. The chapters are brief descriptions of some men and women, who opened new fields in medical sciences, who fought for their ideas, some of them committing honest errors before arriving at the truth. This book will appeal to anyone working in the fields of medicine and science or indeed anyone who has a burgeoning interest for either of these areas. Comprises 28 small chapters focusing on medical scientists and their discoveries. This book is of interest to those in medicine who have an interest in the history of outstanding medical discoveries and the individuals behind them. Paperback. Condizione: new. Paperback. The study of heart disease - cardiology - is an immensely satisfying branch of medicine. The heart is just so tangible; we can see it, touch it, hear it, and when all else fails, we can always manage to put a tube inside and take X-ray pictures of it. Because we try to make sense of a three-dimensional organ by taking two dimensional snapshots, we need a variety of angles to get the complete image, and so often use an oblique view. Day to day life in a cardiac unit is the same; often mundane, sometimes dramatic, but always amenable to being examined with a different slant. How do common cardiac drugs get their name? What sort of music do surgeons choose to listen to as they delve amongst our innards? Why can going to cardiac conferences be so damned irritating and just how close to reality are all those TV hospital dramas? What personalised number plates adorn doctors' cars, which accents best suit which specialties and what should you call a disease in order to ensure that it is your name that is immortalised in the medical textbooks for years to come? This collection of musings touches on these, as well as many other aspects of cardiology. They do not attempt to make sense of any of them; they aim only to broaden the mind a little by taking a sideways glance at medical life. How do common cardiac drugs get their name? What sort of music do surgeons choose to listen to as they delve amongst our innards? Why can going to cardiac conferences be so damned irritating and how close to reality are all those TV hospital dramas? Paperback. Condizione: new. Paperback. Securing a place in medical school can be competitive and daunting. This complex process starts from the GCSE level of education in a student's life and continues through to A-levels, with various hurdles such as the Universities and Colleges Admissions Service (UCAS) application, the University Clinical Aptitude Test (UCAT), volunteering and/or work experience, preparing a personal statement, and attending medical interviews. It is not uncommon for the candidate and their parents to face difficulties at each of these stages; this book provides appropriate advice and resources, and will facilitate the reader's preparation towards securing a place in medical school. There is an average of 15 to 20 applications for each medical school place. The competition increases every year and the selection processes are becoming more difficult. Recently, some medical schools have increased the grades needed at A-levels for their intake criteria. As candidates can apply for only four out of the 46 medical schools in the UK, it can be challenging to apply to the right university successfully. Each medical school has different criteria for selection and the candidate has to apply based on their personal achievements. Despite these difficulties, many young students still work hard and succeed in their ambition to enter the noble rewarding profession of medicine as their lifelong career. This book covers the entry criteria for most medical schools in the United Kingdom, but these principles will apply equally to other countries. It details each and every step of preparation for the candidate and guides them to their goal. Additionally, the book details the process of clearing in the Universities and Colleges Admissions Service for those who have failed the first time round. Finally, guidance is provided for applying to universities abroad. The authors together have amassed huge experience in conducting national courses for medical interviews and have helped hundreds of candidates to successfully secure a place in medical school. Their career guidance courses have received excellent feedback from delegates. Thanthullu Vasu is the organiser and founder of a popular national course for medical interviews and has more than 25 years of experience in the UK National Health Service. Siva Thanthullu is a third-year medical student and has recent experience of entering medicine and guiding others in securing medical school placements. Paperback. Condizione: new. Paperback. Written by one of the world's leading experts - Professor Gerard Said MD FRCP, Dpt de Neurologie, Hpital de la Salpetriere, Paris, FrancePeripheral neuropathy is a common medical condition, the diagnosis of which is often protracted or delayed. It is not always easy to relate a neuropathy to a specific cause. Many people do not receive a full diagnosis, their neuropathy often being described as 'idiopathic' or 'cryptogenic'. It is said that in Europe, one of the most common causes is diabetes mellitus but there are also many other known potential causes. The difficulty of diagnosis, the limited number of treatment options, a perceived lack of knowledge of the subject -except in specialised clinics, the number of which are limited - all add to the difficulties which many neuropathy patients have to face. Another additional problem for many patients is that once having received a full, or even a partial diagnosis, they are then often discharged back to their primary healthcare team who, in many instances, know little about this condition and how it may impact upon their patients' lives. In order to help bridge this gap in medical knowledge and to give healthcare providers a better understanding of this often distressing condition, The Neuropathy Trust has commissioned a new book on this complex topic. Written by one of the world's leading experts on neuropathy, Professor Gerard Said, it is a 'must read' and also a handy reference book for doctors, nurses, physiotherapists, chiropodists/podiatrists and other health professionals. As well as covering the anatomy of the nervous system and the basic pathological processes that may affect the peripheral nerves, the book covers a whole range of neuropathic conditions. These include, for example, Guillain-Barre syndrome, chronic inflammatory demyelinating polyneuropathy, vasculitic neuropathies, infectious neuropathies, diabetic and other metabolic neuropathies, hereditary neuropathies and neuropathies in patients with cancer. Given the almost explosive increase in diabetes predicted over the coming years and the high incidence of HIV infections alone, not to mention all the other possible causes of peripheral neuropathy, no self-respecting medical unit should be without a copy of this new book on their shelves. The author, Professor Gerard Said, is based in the Department of Neurology at the prestigious Hpital de la Salpetriere in Paris. He has devoted a lifetime to the study of peripheral neuropathy and - alongside other great neurological names - added much to the world's ever-growing store of knowledge on this complex but fascinating condition which affects so many individuals. Paperback. Condizione: new. Paperback. Modern science has shown that the widely held beliefs of clinicians about urinary tract infection (UTI) are wrong. A large body of meticulous, rigorous data, from different centres around the world makes this point. How can it be that doctors continue to practise in contradiction of what we now know? A few clinicians are now changing their approach with gratifying results so it is timely to encourage others to do likewise.Clinical guidelines have achieved such influence that most doctors feel compelled to follow them and may face censure if they do not. Regrettably the guidelines are mistaken and contradict the known science. The inertia of bureaucracy and the fear of antimicrobial resistance (AMR) do not help to encourage reflection. However, things are changing and the future should see new and better informed advice. It is a tragedy that these circumstances are leading to widespread suffering amongst many women, some men and children who experience untreated or inadequately treated infection that may plague them for years. This situation has to change. This book sets out the truth about this neglected field and explains the many errors that haunt the topic. The style makes the message accessible to all clinicians. The story is convincing, because the clinical stories that illustrate the text will be so familiar to practising clinicians, who have been baffled by their experiences. Above all, this book will help you and your patients by detailing an accessible, practical approach to resolving this difficult clinical problem in common practice. The scope of the book will cover: the history of the medicine of urinary tract infection (UTI); the urinary microbiome and what the microbes are really up to; the battles between the pathogens and the innate immune system; the truth about the tests and the criteria used to define UTI; antimicrobial resistance and the importance of Darwinian evolution; the science and ground-breaking research on UTIs; the use of antibiotics; successful treatment; supportive and other related treatments; ethics; the future; and, above all, the experiences of the patients.James Malone-Lee is an Emeritus Professor of Medicine at University College London (UCL). For 37 years as a clinical scientist at UCL he studied lower urinary tract symptoms. His research group made discoveries that challenged numerous strongly held beliefs about lower urinary tract disease, particularly infection. For many years this new knowledge was rejected by many, but in the wake of corroborative evidence from others around the world, this new thinking is becoming more widely accepted. Paperback. Condizione: new. Paperback. Winner of a HIGHLY COMMENDED AWARD in the Surgery category of the 2011 BMA Medical Book Competition.A vital question that concerns many: how to make surgery safer? Is it by tightening the regulations and imposing rigid protocols or by empowering surgeons with the resources to help them make safer decisions? This is the book for those who would choose the second option. What do you think separates smart surgeons from the rest? Why, on the other hand, do surgeons make blunders despite having experience and knowledge? There is only one answer to both questions - it is decision-making. Decision-making is an art and is at the heart of surgery. It decides between excellent and poor surgical performance.Although a vital part of professional activity, surgeons are not generally aware of how to optimize decision-making skills. Making a good decision is a skill that, like any skill, needs to be developed and this book reveals how surgeons can sharpen these skills. Presented here are the findings from decision science that surgeons, irrespective of specialty or seniority, can apply to everyday practice. Surgeons are required to adapt new strategies throughout their careers. Ideas taken from this book will help to speed up the learning curve. It offers answers to the questions which experienced surgeons may find difficult to explain. Equally, it answers the questions that trainees may even find difficult to ask. You are expected to be cognizant of the knowledge behind making decisions. Nonetheless, no-one tells you how to access this information easily. This book is the key to that vital information. "This is a very helpful book, written in a friendly and accessible style. It provides many fascinating examples of the phenomenon which so interests us surgeons. Surgeons of all ages and specialties will find it helpful to know about themselves and how they are challenged." Paperback. Condizione: new. Paperback. Of back pain there has been much written, and yet little proven. How can it be that everyone is an expert and yet there has been so little progress? The common forms of back pain defy meaningful diagnosis, treatment is unreliable, and disability and handicap show an inexorable increase. Are matters being made worse with well intentioned but misleading advice? Should published research be more severely criticised? How does one even begin to find a solution to these problems? This book goes a long way towards answering some of these questions. One of the fundamental aims was to produce a reliable and objective diagnostic classification for the common forms of low back pain. The resulting underlying concepts are surprisingly simple. This book will be of interest to anyone involved with treating cases of low back pain, whether they be a generalist, specialist, diagnostician or therapist. Dr. Brian Sweetman has been a Consultant Rheumatologist since 1981. He has dedicated much of his working life to back pain research, gaining a PhD on the topic of back pain in industry and an MD on the Numerical Classification of Common Low Back Pain. In the past he has served as Auditor, then Treasurer, to the Society for Back Pain Research. He still sees back pain patients regularly and also offers medico-legal, industrial and health and safety advice, and continues to publish and correspond on back and neck pain problems. Back pain is the commonest form of rheumatism and it is estimated to affect between 65 to 80 per cent of populations sampled. The actual symptom of back pain is one of the commonest and most perplexing encountered in medical practice. A proper understanding of what it means is crucial for further medical advance.
