Paperback. Condizione: New. Ecology and economics share a common root: the Greek word oikos, meaning a house. Ecology is the way the natural world manages its house. Economics is the way society manages its house. The contentions of this book are that the natural world is the best guide to our economic activities, that supply an…d demand are insufficient determinants, that profit and loss are not alternatives, that wealth cannot be created but can be lost. Ecological economics is a term that has been coined to encapsulate these ideas. We can stop throwing away food before and after it gets to the table. We can learn to deal with our pollution. We can stop wasting our resources. We must look again at our priorities. We're in a race against time. Perhaps there's not time enough, but it's in everyone's interest to try. If we keep our activities on a human scale, maybe the passengers can regain control of the runaway train.

Paperback. Condizione: New. Pockets of Heaven is a small book designed to be carried with you at all times, in your pocket, in your bag, in your car. When you have challenges in your life or you feel unloved, in need of a little uplifting or inspiration, even if you're just having something of a bad day, read this book and take…from its warmth and wisdom. Like taking a deep breath, the words will fill you with a sense of peace. After leaving the routines of work, the author wasn't sure what to do with herself. One day she woke up feeling out of sorts, so she lit a candle, put on some relaxing music, and closed her eyes. Before long there was a voice: the first of many stories. Since then many stories have proceeded from the spirit, culminating in the writing of this book. These tender stories and writings come from a deeply spiritual place. They are visions from angels and spirits to be shared with you, pages of God's love, parables of staying true and enduring what life throws at you, dreamlike messages and wisdom, little pockets of heaven.

Paperback. Condizione: New. These poems deal with some ordinary and not so ordinary facets of a rich life, and they will appeal to those who enjoy words and value the ways in which they can help us to experience life with a greater intensity. Snails creep slowly from one place to another, leaving sticky trails which are very har…d to wipe away. In the same way, words lay down a trail, and it's often only years later that we can make sense of the trail they have left. Michel Foucault was the writer who inspired the author to come to terms with the capacity of language to deceive as well as to define, instruct and enlighten, and so, in a way, this book is a tribute to him.

Paperback. Condizione: New. In this experimental dream-poem a famous European cathedral literally takes off and travels - as in a Japanese animated film - calling in at the Sargasso Sea, then the West Mariana Ridge in the western Pacific, and on to the Transantarctic Mountains. On board are a small band of people who happen to b…e in the cathedral when she takes off, led by a young and bemused cathedral canon. The East Anglian Fenland - especially as it was in early medieval times - lies deep within the cathedral's sense of herself and her people as she travels the globe. But she isn't all local memory; her twenty-first-century almost-silent Octagon engyn powers her and her crew on a tour through geological and historic time.In her newfound freedom the cathedral gets up close and personal with Archean grey gneiss, discovers eel leptocephali, finds magical ancient plants in her own transept, and welcomes a stowaway cat called Mrs Chippy. Drawing on many sources of inspiration, including Geoffrey Chaucer's The House of Fame, this poem is surreal, intricate and sometimes comic.

Paperback. Condizione: New. What do you think of when anyone mentions to you the words "Dick Whittington"? For most people, maybe the first words that spring to mind might be "cat", "mayor", or "pantomime" .However, there is more to this fellow than meets the eye. You see, Dick Whittington was real. He existed.Born in the 1350s,… he grew up to be a wealthy businessman, using his wealth to pay for public projects. He was a Councilman for London, Alderman and Sheriff of the City of London (but not all at the same time!). He was a friend of kings and mayor of London, no less than 4 times - and, as regards the pantomime, this was first performed around 1814 and continues as a firm favourite amongst pantomime goers to this day! Now, in this delightful little book, Eileen Fry describes some less well known facts about this most charismatic character from history . Many of the places associated with him can still be visited today, including St Michael Paternoster Church in London, where he is buried (though the exact burial site itself is not known).

Paperback. Condizione: New. The colour thief of Bristol is a book about two friends, Alba and Evie, who live in the colourful streets of Bristol. One day a mean looking man comes to their fun and vibrant school and visits their headmistress. After the visit she looks uncharacteristically angry and stern and then proceeds to take… all the colour and fun out of their school. When they hear that something similar has happened at their friend's school, they race around Bristol following the man, hoping to stop him and return the colour to their school. They follow him through the city, bumping into more friends. After losing him on a hot air balloon they think of a way to find him again and then track him back to his house. Here, they discover that the villain, rather than being bad, was sad all along. He took the colour out of schools as the sound of children's laughter reminded him of his horrible childhood. Alba and Evie heal him with their warmth and the three of them return the colour to Bristol. This book considers how childhood shapes a person and invites the child to think about why someone may do bad things and to consider the healing effect of being around kindness and warmth. Lilford, Vicky (illustratore).

Paperback. Condizione: New. For a brief time in her life Mrs. Rosaline McCheyne became one of the heroines of the East London Federation of Suffragettes. "The Splendid Mrs. McCheyne" tells the story of her involvement in the women's suffrage movement and what she did in the years which followed. Drawing on the papers of Sylvia P…ankhurst, an extensive interview with Rosaline's descendant, Anne Padfield, and her own research into the history of East London, Jane McChrystal presents us with a portrait of a woman caught up in momentous events, who could all too easily have disappeared without a trace. "The Splendid Mrs. McCheyne" describes some of the key social and political changes which formed the backdrop to Rosaline's life during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, whose legacy lives on to this day. It includes a collection of articles about Rosaline's life and work, showing family historians how potentially dry and dusty research material can be turned into a lively and engaging read. The Splendid Mrs. McCheyne will appeal to readers with an interest in the history of the suffragettes and the east End of London in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries.

Paperback. Condizione: New. Holding the Border is a debut collection of poems from frontline clinical care in UK General Practice by Dr James Brockbank who was a GP in West London for nearly 30 years. The 48 poems are not marshalled into any particular category, the stories have 'come through the door' in random order, just as p…atients do.Like many clinicians Dr Brockbank is well placed to observe stories that reveal much about being human and these poems capture in word and rhythm his experience. GPs work at the interface between symptomatic illness and biomedical disease, where human suffering and distress meets the classification of scientific medicine. This is where the border lies and it is where these stories were found. This book contributes to the canon of Medical Humanities which explores how the humanities, traditionally concerned with recording and exploring human experience, engage with specific experiences of patients, doctors, health, illness and suffering.Dr Brockbank's poems represent the stories heard in family practice, concealed behind the mask of symptoms or disease and demonstrate the value of using the arts and creative expression to explore lived experience. This is a book that conveys the challenges and rewards of being a family doctor. It is for patients and healthcare professionals alike.

Paperback. Condizione: New. Kate Rhodes' poetry reflects her upbringing, travels, and lifelong fascination with light. Her early verse, shaped by years teaching in Central Africa (1960-1964), captures landscapes and daily life with precision and honesty, the fierce sun both subject and metaphor. Later, her fascination with glass… - clear, coloured, stained - inspired poems rooted in Bolton Priory and York Minster, where she worked as a guide. In pieces such as The Glazier's Night-Prayer, she blends wit, reverence, and vision. Living on a Yorkshire farm, her work turned earthward, engaging vividly with weather, birds, and soil, yet always reaching toward the spiritual. Across these phases, Rhodes' poetry grows freer, more candid, and unified by her deep sensitivity to light.
