4to., 288pp., 971 illustrations including 64 colour plates, orig. cloth gilt. A practically fine clean copy in a VG dustwrapper. A large and important of early paintings and drawings including the earliest works of Pablo Picasso. They begin with a charming drawing of a bullfight and some doves which he did when he was nine, and ends with the quite extraordinary etchings and paintings he produced in his early twenties, after a stay in Paris, the stimulus for his Blue Period. In between are hundreds of examples of schoolbook doodling, portraits of his parents and sister, sensitive studies of the mountain village where he spent his holidays, and a whole evocation of the lively cafe and carnival society of Barcelona before the turn of the twentieth century.
