Paperback. Condizione: Very Good. Have you read about the day Eamon Dunphy went for a drink in London with George Best? Or the day Paul Kimmage sat down with Roy Keane in Saipan? Or the story about Paul OConnell and the Superman tee-shirt? Have you met Hurling Man? Do you know why prop forwards rule the roost in Rugby Hell? Or why a famous goal brought so much misery to the man who scored it? These stories and many more can be found in a new collection, On The Seventh Day, an anthology of some of the best sports writing published in Ireland over the last thirty years. There is a literary quality to the best of sports writing - a refusal to dumb down. The cliche that fans are some kind of one-dimensional bozos is largely a creation of people who know little about sport and less about those who are passionate about it. These are the kind of people who have espoused a ban on alcohol sponsorship in sport but not in the arts because the more refined types are wiser to the dangers of alcohol than the ruffian hordes who go to football games. On the Seventh Day showcases some of the best of Irish sports writing, and features undoubted stars of the genre like Paul Kimmage, Eamon Dunphy and David Walsh. Kimmages remarkable piece, `Inside the team that Mick built, which tells the story of Irelands memorable win over Holland in 2001, opens the book and sets the tone for a stunning collection of articles spanning the years from Euro 88 to the summer of 2018. Featured writers also include Eamonn Sweeney, Joe Brolly, Neil Francis, Colm ORourke, Brendan Fanning, Marie Crowe, Anthony Cronin, Dion Fanning, Richard Sadlier, Cliona Foley, Tommy Conlon, and Mick Doyle, covering the GAA, soccer, rugby, golf, athletics, horse racing, boxing, snooker and more. On The Seventh Day explores anger, joy, humour, sadness, pity, tragedy, beauty; there are memories, controversies and celebrations; tales of addiction and tales of redemption. Together, the pieces, which are taken from the pages of the Sunday Independent over the last three decades, show how truly great sports writing stands the test of time. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged.…

Perfect for the tourist market. Author is a genuine full-time storyteller. This collection contains ten stories which convey the sense of wonder of the world of fairies, where the marvellous and unexpected can always happen. Sometimes he wears a cap with a feather. The leprechaun is the keeper of the crock of gold at the end of the rainbow and he knows where all the wealth of the world is buried. Paperback. Condizione: Very Good. In today's education system, there is no longer such an emphasis on learning by heart as there was in former times. Our parents could recite entire poems from beginning to end, word perfect, thereby enriching both their lives and their speech. This book looks at hos the emphasis has now changed from learning to experiencing poetry. Thomas Welsh draws upon his 25 years of experience in Irish classrooms to produce a collection of the most memorable, of the poems learned in school in Ireland long ago. The majority of the poems are by Irish poets, although there are a fair number of English and American poets included; the latter, however, have a distinct Irish flavour. All of the poems have one thing in common; they aim to stir a nostalgic chord. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. Paperback. Condizione: Very Good. One woman's investigation of the role of women in the Christian Church since its inception, as she counters the Roman Catholic church's argument for excluding them from the priesthood Details the gradual exclusion of women from positions of power as the Roman Catholic Church evolved. Accessible account from the viewpoint of an ordinary woman in the Church. Cover quotes from Mary McAleese, Fr. Tony Flannery and Mary T. Malone. What About Me? Women and the Catholic Churchis an exploration by an ordinary woman, born into the Catholic faith of the arguments given to exclude her from ministry. Using her research skills, Sharon examines the New Testament, Christian writings and Papal documents. It is a personal quest to shed light on the story of women in the Christian movement from its earliest days to the present. The objective of the book is to explore, inform, speculate and question and it should appeal to a general audience. The context of the book is the 2010 move by Pope Benedict XVI to elevate the crime of ordaining women to Catholic ministry and the subsequent censoring of religious personnel who questioned this edict. This book details a quest to find out where the strong antipathy towards women in the Roman Catholic Church's institutional mindset comes from. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Paperback. Condizione: Very Good. The period from 1913 to 1923 in Ireland's history of rebellion, is undoubtedly the most significant. The period takes in the revival of interest in all things Irish around 1913, the heroic Easter Rising of 1916, the bloody War of Independence 19191921 and the bitter Civil War of 19221923. Here for the first time, are images of all these episodes, the people, the places, city and country, with insightful commentary describing the context of each photograph. This book gives the reader glimpses of what happened and what life was like during the Irish revolution through photographs of the time. Photographs played an increasingly important role as the Irish struggle for independence took hold, first as memorabilia after the Easter Rising, later as propaganda, and were also of vital importance in the intelligence war fought between the IRA and the British. Includes previously unpublished photos sourced from private collections, the Irish Military Archives, Kilmainham Gaol and British military museums. Paperback. Condizione: Very Good. The tragic tale of the sinking of the famine ship, the St. John in Massachusetts Bay in 1849. The Great Irish Famine drove huge numbers of Irish men and women to leave the island and pursue their survival in foreign lands. In 1847, some 200,000 people sailed for Boston alone. Of this massive group, 2,000 never made it to their destination, killed by disease and hunger during the voyages, their remains consigned to a watery grave. The sinking of the brig St. John off the coast of Massachusetts in October 1849, was only one of many tragic events to occur during this mass exodus. The ship had sailed from Galway, loaded with passengers so desperate to escape the effects of famine that some had walked from as far afield as Clare to reach the ship. The passengers on the St. John made it to within sight of the New World before their ship went down and they were abandoned by their captain, who denied that there had been any survivors when he and some of his crew made it ashore. For those who died in the seas off Massachusetts, there was nothing to mark their last resting place; no name, no memory of them ever having existed, just another statistic in a terrible tragedy. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged.…

From the simplest slab of weathered stone to the most imposing monument, every marker in Glasnevin cemetery bears witness to a life that, in ways small or large, helped shape the history and culture of the Irish state. Shane MacThomais offers a fascinating insight into some of these lives in this book. Within its pages, you'll meet not only the heroes of the Irish fight for freedom, like Michael Collins and Eamon de Valera, but also lesser-known Irish men and women who made important contributions to the state in the arts, sports, military service, politics and other areas of Irish life. Glasnevin Cemetery, encompassing Mount Jerome, Bully's Acre, the Hugeunot Cemetery and the jewish Cemetery, has great national significance through the social and historical influence of the people buried there from all walks of life over 178 years. Famous people interred there include the founder of the cemetery, Daniel O'Connell, as well as Charles Stewart Parnell, Anne Devlin, O'Donovan Rossa, Christy Brown, Brendan Behan and Luke Kelly.
