Paperback. Condizione: Very Good. This book tells the story of five Irish women who were unusual in a variety of ways mostly because of their ruthlessness, political cunning or merely because they rebelled violently against the repressive mores of their times. These five women Aoibheall the Banshee, Maire Rua McMahon, Lady Betty…, Moll Shaughnessy and Alice Kyteler each have their distinct place in history. Eddie Lenihan, in telling the stories of their lives and the legends that grew up around them, ensures that we will not forget the prominent part played by these women in our Irish heritage. Paperback. Condizione: Very Good. The tragic tale of the sinking of the famine ship, the St. John in Massachusetts Bay in 1849. The Great Irish Famine drove huge numbers of Irish men and women to leave the island and pursue their survival in foreign lands. In 1847, some 200,000 people sailed for Boston alone. Of this massive gro…up, 2,000 never made it to their destination, killed by disease and hunger during the voyages, their remains consigned to a watery grave. The sinking of the brig St. John off the coast of Massachusetts in October 1849, was only one of many tragic events to occur during this mass exodus. The ship had sailed from Galway, loaded with passengers so desperate to escape the effects of famine that some had walked from as far afield as Clare to reach the ship. The passengers on the St. John made it to within sight of the New World before their ship went down and they were abandoned by their captain, who denied that there had been any survivors when he and some of his crew made it ashore. For those who died in the seas off Massachusetts, there was nothing to mark their last resting place; no name, no memory of them ever having existed, just another statistic in a terrible tragedy. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged.

Paperback. Condizione: Very Good. Even those who know a great deal about the Easter Rising may not know that there were temporary ceasefires in the St Stephen's Green area, to allow the park attendants to feed the Green's ducks. Few know that the first shots of the rising were actually fired near Portlaoise and not in Dublin or…indeed that both sides issued receipts: the rebels for food, the British for handcuffs. It features excerpts from a previously unpublished diary written by a member of the Jacob's garrison; the story of how rebel communications (being sent in a tin can from rooftop to rooftop) were interrupted by a British crackshot sniper and many other remarkable facts. 50 Things you didn't know about 1916 is a treasure trove of trivia and information that will appeal to the avid student of 1916 as well as the casual reader. Paperback. Condizione: Very Good. My parents were now dabbling with drugs and Southern Comfort, even going so far as to put a selection of hallucinogens into my bottle to witness the effects for their own amusement. I only know this because my mum made no attempt to hide it, often speaking openly about their experiments with my…milk supply. Her only regret being the time she added a small amount of speed to my formula to see how long it would take me to fall asleep. Set in the UK and Ireland in the late 1970s and early 1980s, You Shot My Dog and I Love You, is a harrowing story of horrific physical and mental abuse inflicted on the author at the hands of his parents. In addition, the author's parents demanded that he assist them in their life of crime, go on the run in Europe to evade the law, and hide out in a caravan from the local police force. This is just some of the trauma that the author writes about. The story is intertwined with darkly comic elements to provide relief from the disturbing events of a tumultuous childhood. Due to the nature of the content You Shot My Dog and I Love You is written anonymously. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged.

Paperback. Condizione: Very Good. What would you do to save your child? When Vera Twomey's daughter Ava was diagnosed with Dravet Syndrome, a rare form of epilepsy that causes multiple seizures a day, the family's life was thrown into chaos. Where they hoped to find treatment and support in the medical system, they found only fr…ustration. The only medication that would have any effect on Ava's condition is a form of medicinal cannabis that was unavailable in Ireland. Thus began the family's fight to alleviate their daughter's suffering and give her a chance at life. Faced with an intransigent system and political establishment, Vera's campaign eventually culminated in her decision to walk from Cork to Leinster House in Dublin in protest to ask health minister Simon Harris for help in person. For Ava tells the story of the campaign for Ava's medication and the family's move to the Netherlands in order to legally access the medication that would save her life. It also pays tribute to the people who helped Vera achieve her goal. Above all, this is a moving story about the lengths a parent will go to for their child's health and happiness. The period takes in the revival of interest in all things Irish around 1913, the heroic Easter Rising of 1916, the bloody War of Independence 19191921 and the bitter Civil War of 19221923. This book gives the reader glimpses of what happened and what life was like during the Irish revolution through photographs of the time. Paperback. Condizione: Very Good. In the late nineteenth century, before women had the vote, a group of respectable ladies operated outside the law to fight for the rights of the landless poor in Ireland. These women were feared by both the British government and Irish Republicans. They were considered too militant, even by the…militants, and because they were women, even the law couldn't stop them. They were the Ladies' Land League, founded in January 1881 by Miss Anna Stewart Parnell. When the male leaders of the original Land League were imprisoned by the British, the Ladies League took over their work. Exploiting loopholes in the law, they soon became more successful than the men, establishing over 400 branches in Ireland. But when Anna started questioning the men's political strategies instead of merely distributing alms, she became a threat to more than the British she became a threat to the Republican movement itself. There was only one man who could silence her: Her brother, Charles Stewart Parnell. Before j…oining the Times, Martin had an eventful career. He worked as a sports commentator in the Irish Press and the 'Irish Independent', sports editor of the 'Sunday Tribune' and as a columnist in the 'Evening Herald'. As Moscow correspondent for 'The Irish Time's, he was an eyewitness to the collapse of communism and the dissolution of the Soviet Union. Later, he covered the release of Nelson Mandela from prison, the collapse of the apartheid regime and the arrival of democracy in South Africa and reported on Mandela's rise to president.
