Paperback. Condizione: Good. The Cultures of the West focuses on the ways in which the major ideas and passions of Western culture developed, internally, and how they interacted with the broader world - for good and for ill. Key among these ideas and passions are religion, science, and philosophy, all of whose development form the central narrative of this book. The Cultures of the West stands apart from other textbooks in a variety of ways, the first being thematic unity. What did people think and believe, throughout our history, about human nature, the right way to live, God, the best forms of government, or the meaning of human life? Rather than maintaining a single interpretive stance, the author relies upon a consistent (or at least a persistent) set of questions: What did people think and feel throughout the centuries about politics, science, religion, and sex? How did they come to their positions regarding the right way to live? Clifford Backman's many years of experience in the classroom have informed his approach: students respond to engaging questions more than they are inspired by facts. The Cultures of the West also differs in its geographic catchment area: since Western Civilization begins in Mesopotamia, there is no reason to exclude the Near East from our history. Islam is, after all, just as much a Western religion as Judaism and Christianity are; it is in fact one of the products of Western Civilization. Hence, The Cultures of the West book incorporates the history of Jewish Palestine, the medieval Islamic world, the Ottoman state, and the modern Middle East into the main narrative. …

Paperback. Condizione: Good. For American writers self-exiled to Paris during the 1920s and 1930s, the French capital represented what their homeland could not: a milieu that nurtured the full expression of the creative imagination. How these expatriates interpreted and gave modernist shape to the myth of the Paris moment is the focus of Donald Pizer's study.…

Paperback. Condizione: Good. For decades, historians have primarily analyzed charges of black-on-white rape in the South through accounts of lynching or manifestly unfair trial proceedings, suggesting that white southerners invariably responded with extralegal violence and sham trials when white women accused black men of assault. Lisa Lindquist Dorr challenges this view with a careful study of legal records, newspapers, and clemency files from early-twentieth-century Virginia. White Virginians' inflammatory rhetoric, she argues, did not necessarily predict black men's ultimate punishment. While trials were often grand public spectacles at which white men acted to protect white women and to police interracial relationships, Dorr points to cracks in white solidarity across class and gender lines. At the same time, trials and pardon proceedings presented African Americans with opportunities to challenge white racial power. Taken together, these cases uncover a world in which the mandates of segregation did not always hold sway, in which whites and blacks interacted in the most intimate of ways, and in which white women and white men saw their interests in conflict. In Dorr's account, cases of black-on-white rape illuminate the paradoxes at the heart of segregated southern society: the tension between civilization and savagery, the desire for orderly and predictable racial boundaries despite conflicts among whites and relationships across racial boundaries, and the dignity of African Americans in a system dependent on their supposed inferiority. The rhetoric of protecting white women spoke of white supremacy and patriarchy, but its practice revealed the limits of both.…

Paperback. Condizione: Good. In Christian theology, a skandalon is a distraction from grace, a maze of error where we wander pointlessly, wasting our lives. To the ancient Greeks, a skandalon was the trigger of a trap. T.R. Hummer's labyrinthine new collection encompasses these meanings and more, as its poems take various paths to unexpected destinations.…

Paperback. Condizione: Very Good. Man is a born philosopher and since the beginning of existence he has been searching for a meaning to life. Key Thinkers in Christianity introduces some of the most brilliant minds we have known and shows the capacity of their ideas to endure the test of time and shape the way philosophy and Christianity have developed throughout history. From Irenaeus in the 2nd century to Hans Urs von Balthasar in the 20th century, this short selection links together some of the most profound ideas of all time, taking the reader on a journey through a history of thought, relevant for both Christian and non-Christian thinkers of the future. Some of the thinkers in this volume were not chosen purely for their insights and observations, but for the fact that other thinkers since have gone back to their ideas, others represent an age or a way of thinking. Although these thinkers are no longer alive, their observations and ideas remain important and their throughts are still the subject of study today. How relevant are the writings of Origen to the aspirations of modern day Christians? To what extent was Athanasius influenced by the thoughts of Origen? What impact did Martin Luther have on Christianity in Northern Europe during the Renaissance? What did Immanuel Kant have to say about Christian thinking? Why has there been a recent resurgence in interest in Kierkegaard's work? Why has there been a recent decline in interest in Bultmann's work? Was Karl Barth the greatest theologian of the 20th century? What did Karl Rahner think of Hans Urs von Balthasar's ideas.…

Paperback. Condizione: Good. This is not your ordinary short story collection. In his newest work, Daniel Chacón subverts expectation and bends the rules of reality to create stories that are intriguing, hilarious, and deeply rooted in Chicano culture. These stories explore the concept of a wall that reaches beyond our immediate thoughts of a towering physical structure. While Chacón aims to address the partition along the U.S.-Mexico border, he also uses these stories to work through the intangible walls that divide communities and individuals-particularly those who straddle multiple cultures in their daily lives. Set in El Paso and other Latinx-dominant urban spaces, Kafka in a Skirt is an immersive look into the myriad lives of the characters who inhabit these culturally diverse areas. Chacón masterfully weaves elements of the surreal and fantastic through a shining tapestry of fiction, creating moments of touching realism in contrast with scenes that are fascinatingly unfamiliar. Occasionally teasing the ghosts of Jorge Luis Borges and the Argentine poet Alejandra Pizarnik, this collection disregards boundaries and transports readers into a world merely parallel to our own. Kafka in a Skirt unravels the intricacies of culture, sexuality, love, and loneliness in a collection that shows the personal implications of barriers while remaining hopeful and bright.…

Paperback. Condizione: Good. Tina Modotti, known to a few as the beautiful Italian actress in Erich von Stroheim's silent film Greed, was also a dedicated political activist and a photographer whose best work has a powerful dignity and integrity. She lived with Edward Weston in postrevolutionary Mexico in the 1920s. During the Spanish Civil War in the 1930s, she was a nurse in Madrid and on various fronts. In Spain she knew Antonio Machado and Pablo Neruda, who wrote a poem about her after her death in Mexico in 1942. Margaret Gibson's Memories of the Future is based on Modotti's vivid but enigmatic life. Drawn from daybooks that Gibson imagines Modotti to have kept at the end of her life in Mexico City, these poems give us the reflections of a woman whose intensity and vision, evident in her own photographs, are matched by the depth and breadth of her experience and personal transformation in times of deep social and political upheaval.…

Paperback. Condizione: Good. Patterns of World History offers a distinct framework for understanding the global past through the study of origins, interactions, and adaptations. Authors Peter von Sivers, Charles A. Desnoyers, and George Stow - each specialists in their respective fields - examine the full range of human ingenuity over time and space in a comprehensive, even-handed, and critical fashion. The book helps students to see and understand patterns through: ORIGINS - INTERACTIONS - ADAPTATIONSThese key features show the O-A-I framework in action:* Seeing Patterns, a list of key questions at the beginning of each chapter, focuses students on the 3-5 over-arching patterns, which are revisited, considered, and synthesized at the end of the chapter in Thinking Through Patterns.* Each chapter includes a Patterns Up Close case study that brings into sharp relief the O-I-A pattern using a specific idea or thing that has developed in human history (and helped, in turn, develop human history), like the innovation of the Chinese writing system or religious syncretism in India. Each case study clearly shows how an innovation originated either in one geographical center or independently in several different centers. It demonstrates how, as people in the centers interacted with their neighbors, the neighbors adapted to - and in many cases were transformed by - the idea, object, or event. Adaptations include the entire spectrum of human responses, ranging from outright rejection to creative borrowing and, at times, forced acceptance.…

Paperback. Condizione: Good. From the signing of the Treaty of Waitangi between Indigenous and settler cultures to the emergence of the first-ever state-funded M?ori television network, New Zealand has been a hotbed of Indigenous concerns. Given its history of colonization, coping with biculturalism is central to New Zealand life. Much of this ?bicultural drama? plays out in the media and is molded by an anxiety surrounding the ongoing struggle over citizenship rights that is seated within the politics of recognition. The Fourth Eye brings together Indigenous and non-Indigenous scholars to provide a critical and comprehensive account of the intricate and complex relationship between the media and M?ori culture. Examining the Indigenous mediascape, The Fourth Eye shows how M?ori filmmakers, actors, and media producers have depicted conflicts over citizenship rights and negotiated the representation of Indigenous people. From nineteenth-century M?ori-language newspapers to contemporary M?ori film and television, the contributors explore a variety of media forms including magazine cover stories, print advertisements, commercial images, and current M?ori-language newspapers to illustrate the construction, expression, and production of indigeneity through media.Focusing on New Zealand as a case study, the authors address the broader question: what is Indigenous media? While engaging with distinct themes such as the misrepresentation of M?ori people in the media, access of Indigenous communities to media technologies, and the use of media for activism, the essays in this much-needed new collection articulate an Indigenous media landscape that converses with issues that reach far beyond New Zealand.
