The Chicago school of pragmatism was one of the most controversial and prominent intellectual movements of the late 1800s and early 1900s. Spanning the ferment of academic and social thought that erupted in those turbulent times in America,…the Chicago pragmatists earned widespread attention and respect for many decades. They were a central force in philospohy, contesting realism and idealism for supremacy in metaphysics, epistemology and value theory. Their functionalist views formed the Chicago school of religion, which sparked intense scrutiny into the real meaning of theism, religious experience and the role of religious values in society. Their social standpoint on psychology generated the Chicago school of sociology, social pscyhology and symbolic interactionism, aiming to make schools more reponsive to the democratic and industrial character of the country. In economics, labour issues, civil rights and liberal politics, the Chicago school was also impossible to ignore. This four-volume set focuses on the cornerstones of the thought grounding such intellectual activism - their philosophies of human nature, intelligence, values and social purpose. Key writings of these major philosophers are set in their proper context of important writings of James Angell, Edward Ames, Addison Moore, and of many of their graduates who had significant careers, including Ella Flagg Young, H. The "International Education Series" brings together Western writings upon educational subjects from ancient times to the First World War. The range of writings cover practical, theoretical and historical education. Taken together…these historical and critical texts provide a theoretical framework for the practice of teaching. Many of these texts are very uncommon and should be of use to both historians of education, social history and educationalists. Originally published between 1890 and 1915, the series was devised and edited by William Torey Harris (1835-1909), United States Commissioner of Education. Harris wrote on philosophy, and in particular Hegel and Hegelianism, as well as being a prominent educationalist. He was an active public lecturer, leader of the St Louis movement, editor of Wedster's "Dictionary" and of America's first regular devoted to philosophy ("The Journal of Speculative Philosophy, 1867-93), and author of some 500 articles. For this series, Harris provided introductions, analyses and commentaries to the individual volumes. "Froebel and Nursery Education" is the third collection in the series. Focused on Friedrich Froebel (1782-1852), the German philosopher of education most famous for starting the kindergarten movement, the set gathers 10 volumes on the early education of children, including translations of some of Froebel's most important writings, expositions of Froebel's philosophy by others, and other notable authors on the development of the young child. This collection of rare writings includes the 4-volume "Works", containing all of Grove's sermons, discourses and tracts, collected and published posthumously by pupil, assistant and successor at the Academy, Thomas Amory. In addition the set contains the scarce 2-volume "System of Moral Philosophy" and John Ball's rare pamphlet "Remarks on a New Way of Teaching", a polemic to which Grove replies in the "Works". Hardback Frederic Boase's "Modern English Biography" (1892-1921) contains over 25,000 biographies of English men and women from the 19th century, making this six-volume dictionary a reference work for scholars in many disciplines. For a period of over twenty years Boase (1…843-1916) made a collection of notes relating to English persons deceased since 1850. The work contains memoirs of a variety of members of parliament. Other persons included are architects, inventors, publishers, actors, painters, engravers, physicians, eccentric characters and notorious criminals: "in fact any one who has been well known and about whom a question might arise in general conversations". Each memoir contains the main details of each life, sources of portraits and, for authors, short titles of their main works. Boase's information was carefully obtained and checked from various sources to give accurate details, such as birth and death dates. Containing a wealth of information, this important contribution to English biography of the 19th century supplements other biographical sources such as the "Dictionary of National Biography", "English Men of Letters", "Alumni Oxionienses" and "Cantabrigienses".
