Paperback. Condizione: new. Paperback. Rest, Rest, Kelp, and Sway (Standard Paperback Edition)A Story of Counting, Balance, and Getting It Right (and a Little Night Music)The Math Explorers Series - Book 9The Minnowlin Inn and Spa is ready to open.Almost.Across the Still Pond, the rooms are prepared, the restaurants are waiting, the staff is trained, and the walkways are polished for guests who have not yet arrived. The orchestra is rehearsing. The crows are coordinating messages. The minnows are watching the water. Everyone knows the opening matters. But readiness is not the same as simplicity. As reservations increase, menus multiply, schedules shift, and guests arrive from different places with different expectations, Tamias and his companions begin to see that opening the Inn is not just a matter of effort. It is a matter of counting carefully, understanding choices, and knowing which parts of a system depend on which other parts.A menu with five courses may look simple-until every course offers multiple choices. A time written on a schedule may seem clear-until someone asks what one o'clock means somewhere else. A rare event may feel impossible-until the numbers show that rare is not the same as never. And a system that appears calm on the surface may contain far more possibilities than anyone first imagined. As the grand opening approaches, the community must think through probability, proportion, time zones, combinations, permutations, branching choices, capacity, reservations, and the hidden structure behind ordinary decisions. How many possible meals can one menu create? What happens when choices depend on earlier choices? Why does order sometimes matter? How does a credit card represent trust rather than coins? And how does good planning become almost invisible when everything finally works?Through quiet observation, careful reasoning, and the familiar humor of the Stream and Pond, Tamias helps reveal the mathematics beneath the opening of the Minnowlin Inn and Spa. The story moves from kitchens and crow routes to orchestra rehearsals, time zones, dining rooms, check-ins, messages, menus, and one very unfair frog.Along the way, readers return to a wide cast of familiar characters, including Elm and Aspen, Gregor Gormay, Wolfgang Duck, Corvus and the crows, Barsh and the minnows, Juan Zhong, Tiana, Zubin, Odinata, Melvyn Rana, and many others as the Inn prepares to welcome the world. As with every volume in The Math Explorers Series, the story introduces real mathematical ideas through narrative rather than instruction. Concepts such as probability, proportion, counting methods, independent and dependent choices, permutations, combinations, time systems, capacity, abstraction, and decision trees emerge naturally as the characters work through the challenges of a complex opening day.Extensive appendices for parents, teachers, and curious readers explore the mathematical thinking behind the story and provide discussion prompts and activities that connect these ideas to real-world systems-from menus and schedules to maps, payments, reservations, and event planning. At its heart, Rest, Rest, Kelp, and Sway is a story about how careful counting supports careful judgment. It is about the difference between guessing and knowing, between being busy and being ready, and between seeing isolated details and understanding the system that connects them.Because when everything is about to begin, every choice matters. And getting it right still matters. Paperback. Condizione: new. Paperback. The Cargo Conundrum (Standard Paperback Edition)A Story of Precision, Professionalism, and Becoming the Pilot Others Can Depend OnBook 8 of The Flying Explorers SeriesTamias has learned to fly the airplane. Now he must learn to fly like a professional. After his long-range cargo adventure, Tamias returns to Toad University with a new goal: earn his commercial pilot certificate. But Strix Caelum makes one thing clear from the beginning.Commercial flying is not simply about being paid to fly.It is about becoming the kind of pilot a system can depend on.Training begins with an unexpected opportunity. Toad University has acquired a Cirrus Vision Jet G3, giving Tamias a close look at an airplane where speed, automation, energy, and workload leave little room for sloppy thinking. The jet can manage enormous amounts of information-but the pilot must remain ahead of it.Then Tamias returns to the Cessna 172, where precision becomes the standard.Steep turns demand exact altitude and airspeed control. Chandelles turn airspeed into altitude. Lazy eights require timing and patience. Steep spirals force the pilot to manage the airplane's remaining energy without power. Every maneuver teaches the same lesson in a different way: Skill is not enough. It must be repeatable. Then Crow HQ presents a problem no checklist can solve. The Minnowlin Inn and Spa is expanding, and enormous hardwood planks for the new ballroom have arrived at a warehouse miles away. They are too large for the crows to carry, too heavy for ordinary transportation, and must somehow be delivered intact beside the water.Tamias sees a solution.Fly them. With Strix beside him and an amphibious Cessna Caravan beneath him, Tamias enters an entirely new kind of operation-one involving cargo weight, aircraft performance, water landings, changing surfaces, float operations, and the unforgiving importance of having the landing gear in exactly the right position. The cargo mission becomes commercial training of the most practical kind.Along the way, Tamias encounters advanced aircraft systems, CAPS whole-aircraft parachute technology, emergency autoland, seaplane operations, cargo loading, energy management, and the increasingly demanding standards expected of a professional pilot. But the greatest change is not in the airplanes he flies. It is in the way he thinks. The Cargo Conundrum is a story about precision, reliability, problem-solving, and professional judgment. It explores the difference between being able to perform a maneuver and being able to perform it correctly, consistently, and under pressure-while showing how aviation, engineering, logistics, and good decision-making are all parts of the same system.Perfect for readers who value real-world aviation concepts, disciplined thinking, and story-driven learning, this eighth volume takes Tamias closer than ever to becoming something he once only dreamed about: A professional pilot.New to the series? Paperback. Condizione: new. Paperback. Between Heat and Horizon (Standard Paperback Edition)A Story of Systems, Judgment, and Learning to Fly Beyond the FamiliarBook 7 of The Flying Explorers SeriesTamias has learned to trust the instruments. Now he must learn to manage an entire operation. When Captain Corax and Strix Caelum accept a long-range cargo contract, Tamias is invited aboard as the third pilot. The mission will take them across multiple states, through changing weather, busy airspace, unfamiliar airports, and twelve demanding stops. This is no ordinary training flight. The Aquila T-9 Meridian is faster, heavier, and far more advanced than the airplanes Tamias knows. Its glass cockpit, flight management system, coupled autopilot, weather radar, and integrated navigation equipment can reduce a pilot's workload-but only when the pilot understands exactly what the airplane has been commanded to do.Tamias quickly discovers that automation does not eliminate mistakes. It can carry them out with perfect precision.A wrongly selected altitude brings immediate scrutiny from air traffic control. Holding instructions test his ability to remain organized under pressure. Weather forces the crew to reconsider carefully planned routes. Weight, balance, fuel, fatigue, and aircraft performance must be recalculated at every stop.Under Corax's sharp judgment and Strix's calm instruction, Tamias learns that professional aviation is not about looking confident. It is about remaining accurate when tired, uncertain, or under pressure. Each leg presents a different challenge: layered airspace, instrument approaches, changing cargo loads, partial-panel failures, diversions, lost communications, and the constant responsibility of staying ahead of a fast-moving airplane. At the heart of the journey is one essential lesson: the airplane will not do what the pilot intended. It will do what the pilot commanded.Between Heat and Horizon is a story about automation, discipline, fatigue, weather, and operational judgment. It explores the difference between flying an airplane and managing a complete aviation system-where every decision affects the next.Perfect for readers who value real-world aviation concepts, disciplined thinking, and story-driven learning, this seventh volume takes The Flying Explorers Series farther, faster, and deeper into the responsibilities of professional flight.New to the series? Paperback. Condizione: new. Paperback. Seeing When You Can't See (Standard Paperback Edition)A Story of Instruments, Judgment, and Learning to Trust What Is TrueBook 5 of The Flying Explorers SeriesTamias has learned how to go somewhere. Now he has to learn how to see when he cannot see.At Toad University, flight training enters a more serious phase. Flying is no longer only about looking outside, following landmarks, correcting for wind, or returning safely from a cross-country route. Now the outside world can disappear. The horizon can become unavailable. The body can lie. And the pilot must learn to trust instruments, procedures, and disciplined thought over instinct. When Tamias begins instrument work under the hood, the task sounds almost impossible: fly the airplane without using the view outside. But aviation has never rewarded comfort. The scan must hold. The instruments must be interpreted. And when something fails-or appears to fail-the pilot must decide what information is trustworthy and what is not.Under the exacting instruction of Captain Corax, with Esquilo's steady systems knowledge and Professor Flugbatt's evaluating eye never far away, Tamias begins to understand that seeing is not the same as looking. A pilot can stare at the sky and still miss the truth. A pilot can lose the horizon and still remain in control-if the scan, the procedures, and the judgment are strong enough.Along the way, Tamias encounters more complex aircraft, including a Beechcraft Bonanza G36 and a scaled Cirrus G2 jet, discovering that advanced systems do not make a pilot more capable. They reveal whether the pilot is already disciplined enough to manage them. More power, more displays, and more automation do not remove responsibility. They increase it.At the heart of this journey is a single idea: the airplane does not care what the pilot feels. To fly safely, Tamias must learn to separate sensation from fact, curiosity from task, and confidence from assumption. He must recognize instrument failures, manage partial-panel flight, understand medical certification, and prepare for the practical test that will determine whether he is ready to become a certificated pilot.Seeing When You Can't See is a story about trust-but not blind trust. It is about learning which information deserves belief, which instincts must be questioned, and why real confidence comes from disciplined verification. It is about flying the airplane first.Perfect for readers who value clarity, systems thinking, and real-world aviation concepts woven seamlessly into story, this fifth volume deepens the journey of The Flying Explorers Series while standing strongly on its own.New to the series?
