Aggiungi al carrelloPaperback. Condizione: Sehr gut. The copy is in a very good and clean condition without markings. - "If the pace of the novel suggests a detective story, the concerns that drive it are far more spiritual, and considerably more frightening." - The Washington Post -- "A master, a writer who has achieved a marvellous blend of Western existential thought and fiction with something inherently Japanese." - The Observer -- A "provocative, impassioned meditation. with the unerring grace that defines a novelist in the fullest command of his craft." - Publishers Weekly -- An enigmatic train of events is set in motion when Suguro, an aging, respectably married Catholic novelist is accosted by a drunken woman at a party. She claims to know him from his frequent visits to the unsavory porn district of Tokyo, where his portrait is being exhibited. Suguro denies any knowledge of the picture or ever having been in that part of town. Yet when a morbid curiosity compels him to track down the portrait, it seems oddly familiar, like a leering, degenerate-looking version of himself. Scandal is at once a psychological thriller and a literary work of art that grips and propels the reader as it subtly peels off layers from the dark side of human nature -- Shusaku Endo was born in Tokyo in 1923. He graduated with a degree in French literature from Keio University, then studied in Lyons on a French government scholarship. In his books, Endo fuses the literary traditions of East and West as no other writer has done, and has been called by Graham Greene "one of the finest living novelists." Endo has received honorary doctorates from a number of American universities and won several major literary awards, including the Akutagawa Prize, the Mainichi Cultural Prize, the Shincho Prize, and the Tanizaki Prize. Van C. Gessel teaches modern Japanese literature at the University of California at Berkeley. Scandal is the fourth of Shusaku Endo's books he has translated into English. Black-and-white crests by Hide Doki. Guter Zustand. Schutzumschlag leicht fleckig. Aus dem Klappentext: "In this exquisite volume of haiku, Günther Klinge takes us on a journey through the days and nights of each of the seasons, beginning with the spring dawn and ending with a winter midnight. - Haiku (jap. Previous owner's note on the endpaper in ballpoint pen, the binding is slightly rubbed, the pages are slightly browned due to the paper, otherwise a very good and clean copy without markings. - (publishing text:) HERE AT LAST is an entertaining account in English of the historical mass seppuku (disembowelment) of the forty-seven ronin, or masterless samurai, shortly after the turn of the 18th century in the feudal Tokugawa days of old Japan. The forty-seven ronin were ordered to commit seppuku for their vindictive slaying of a corrupt court official whom they held ultimately responsible for bringing about the death of their master, Lord Asano. Asano was the brash young daimyo from the country whose ignorance of and unfamiliarity with the changing ways of the Edo court led not only to his own seppuku but also to the complete ruin and dissemination of his family and clan. Though based on an actual incident, many details have been lost to history, and, as a result, several versions of the forty-seven ronin story have been told. But the fact remains that they were given the death penalty for their deed, which, at the time, so embodied the Japanese's ideals of the noble samurai's devotion to his lord that the forty-seven ronin were enshrined at Sengaku Temple beside their beloved master. Thus came to a dramatic close the final chapter of what has been acclaimed the most famous vendetta in the annals of Japan. JOHN ALLYN is a film and music editor in the motion picture and television industries and also a writer/director of industrial films in the aerospace field. Mr. Allyn attended the Army Specialized Training Program at Stanford University in 1944, majoring in the Japanese language, and also attended the Army Intensive Japanese Language School at the University of Michigan in 1945, receiving a B.A. degree from the latter. During the first four years of the U.S. occupation of Japan, he worked as Pictorial Censor of the Civil Censorship Detachment of G2, SCAP, in Osaka and Tokyo. After his return to the United States he entered UCLA in Los Angeles from where he received his master's degree in Theater Arts in 1951. He is currently working toward a Ph.D degree in Theater History at UCLA, specializing in the modern Japanese theater. In addition to The Forty-Seven Ronin Story, Mr. Allyn is now preparing "The History of Modern Theater in Japan." He was born in Los Angeles where he now lives with his wife. Aggiungi al carrelloPaperback. Condizione: Sehr gut. 3rd printing. xii, 271 p., Ill. The copy is in a very good and clean condition without markings. - (publishing text:) Readers of medieval Japanese literature; es- pecially those who have been charmed by its romance and attracted by its philosophy, will be pleased to have two more of its masterpieces made available to them in Professor Sadler's pleasant English. The Ten Foot Square Hut offers the memorable reflections of a recluse who has retired in dis- gust from a world too full of violent contrasts and cataclysms. Written some seven hundred years ago, it has an astonishing timeliness today. Tales of the Heike is a kind of Japanese equiv- alent of Tales of a Scottish Clan. Professor Sad- ler's translation presents vivid selections from the story of the Heike clan from the days of its splendour down to its tragic end, when its leaders, utterly defeated by the Minamoto clan and scorning to surrender, throw them- selves into the sea and perish. It is fortunate indeed that Professor Sadler, long a devotee of Japan and its culture, chose to bring these two classics of Japanese literature into the repertory of translations for Western readers. The late A. L. SADLER, M.A., was Professor of Oriental Studies at the University of Sydney from 1922 to 1948, at which time he became emeritus professor. He also served as Professor of Japanese at the Royal Military College of Australia. Among his numerous published works, in addition to the present volume, are The Life of Tokugawa Ieyasu (1936), Three Mil- itary Classics of China (1944), A Short History of Japan (1946), and a number of translations from Japanese literature. His Cha-No-Yu (1933) and A Short History of Japanese Architecture (1941) have recently appeared in reprint versions of the same type as the present volume. Professor Sadler made his home in England until his death in 1970. ISBN 9780804808798 Sprache: Englisch Gewicht in Gramm: 247.
