Taschenbuch. Condizione: Neu. Neuware - Living Genres in Late Modernity rehears the American 1970s through the workings of its musical genres. Exploring stylistic developments from the late 1960s through the early 1980s, including soul, funk, disco, pop, the nocturne, and the concerto, Charles Kronengold treats genres as unstabl…e constellations of works, people, practices, institutions, technologies, money, conventions, forms, ideas, and multisensory experiences. What these genres share is a significant cultural moment: they arrive just after 'the sixties' and are haunted by a sense of belatedness, loss, or doubt, even as they embrace narratives of progress or abundance. These genres give us reasons--and means--to examine our culture's self-understandings. Through close readings and large-scale mappings of cultural and stylistic patterns, the book's five linked studies reveal how genres help construct personal and cultural identities that are both partial and overlapping, that exist in tension with one another, and that we experience in ebbs and flows.

Taschenbuch. Condizione: Neu. Neuware - The making of a culture of Black male respectability at Morehouse that underlines conservative notions of gender and class--by a former Spelman student who was once 'Miss Morehouse.' How does it feel to be groomed as the 'solution' to a national Black male 'problem' This is the guiding par…adox of Respectable, an in-depth examination of graduates of Morehouse College, the nation's only historically Black college for men. While Black male collegians are often culturally fetishized for 'beating the odds,' the image of Black male success that Morehouse assiduously promotes and celebrates is belied by many of the realities that challenge the students on this campus. Saida Grundy offers a unique insider perspective: a graduate of Spelman college and a former 'Miss Morehouse,' Grundy crafts an incisive feminist and sociological account informed by her personal insights and scholarly expertise. Respectable gathers the experiences of former students and others connected to Morehouse to illustrate the narrow, conservative vision of masculinity molded at a competitive Black institution. The thirty-two men interviewed unveil a culture that forges confining ideas of respectable Black manhood within a context of relentless peer competition and sexual violence, measured against unattainable archetypes of idealized racial leadership. Grundy underlines the high costs of making these men--the experiences of low-income students who navigate class issues at Morehouse, the widespread homophobia laced throughout the college's notions of Black male respectability, and the crushingly conformist expectations of a college that sees itself as making 'good' Black men. As Morehouse's problems continue to pour out into national newsfeeds, this book contextualizes these issues not as a defect of Black masculinity, but as a critique of what happens when an institution services an imagination of what Black men should be, at the expense of more fully understanding the many ways these young people see themselves.

Buch. Condizione: Neu. Neuware - The Babylonian Talmud is full of stories of demonic encounters, and it also includes many laws that attempt to regulate such encounters. In this book, Sara Ronis takes the reader on a journey across the rabbinic canon, exploring how late antique rabbis imagined, feared, and controlled demons. Ron…is contextualizes the Talmud's thought within the rich cultural matrix of Sasanian Babylonia, placing rabbinic thinking in conversation with Sumerian, Akkadian, Ugaritic, Syriac Christian, Zoroastrian, and Second Temple Jewish texts about demons to delve into the interactive communal context in which the rabbis created boundaries between the human and the supernatural, and between themselves and other religious communities. Demons in the Details explores the wide range of ways that the rabbis participated in broader discussions about beliefs and practices with their neighbors, out of which they created a profoundly Jewish demonology.

Taschenbuch. Condizione: Neu. Neuware - Some Unpublished Letters of Lord Chesterfield brings to light twenty-six previously unknown letters of the fourth Earl, written largely during the final months of his life. Preserved in handsome quarto volumes once belonging to the Earl of Carnarvon and now in private hands, these letters,… ten in Chesterfield's own script and the remainder dictated to his trusted valet James Walsh, provide rare insights into his last years. They reveal a mind undimmed by illness or age--sharp, trenchant, and characteristically unsentimental--continuing to offer witty judgments on men and events. Several letters are enriched by Walsh's postscripts, reflecting both the intimacy of his service and Chesterfield's reliance upon him when deafness and infirmity curtailed his activities. The collection is further augmented by three manuscript drafts outlining Chesterfield's evolving educational program for his godson and heir, which culminated in the long French letter of instruction to Georges Deyverdun, Edward Gibbon's friend and the chosen governor of the young Philip Stanhope. The letters deepen our understanding of Chesterfield not by altering his established image but by filling in its contours. They show him skeptical of fashionable charlatans such as Dr. William Dodd, yet resigned to the limits of his ward's promise. They also document his persistent distrust of Italy as a site for moral training, his preference for Geneva or Leipzig as centers of study, and his concern that the governor guide without smothering the youth. Alongside these specific plans, the letters continue to sparkle with the stylistic brilliance that made Chesterfield's Letters to His Son a classic, combining worldly counsel with ironic candor. Edited with attention to textual fidelity--Walsh's eccentric spellings normalized but Chesterfield's holographs preserved--the volume offers both scholars and general readers a vivid supplement to the well-known corpus, providing a last glimpse of a statesman-philosopher facing decline with wit, realism, and dignity. Taschenbuch. Condizione: Neu. Neuware - Bibliography and Footnotes: A Style Manual for Students and Writers serves as a guide for scholarly writers, providing techniques and conventions essential for the accurate citation of sources. The manual underscores the importance of documenting sources to acknowledge the author's relianc…e on them, invite scrutiny, and support interpretations and conclusions. Bibliography and footnotes serve complementary purposes: bibliographies offer detailed references to works consulted, while footnotes provide specific citations tied to the text. By clearly distinguishing these functions, the manual ensures citations are meaningful and intelligible, emphasizing clarity, conciseness, consistency, and accuracy. A consistent style of citation aids the reader in identifying and locating cited works without ambiguity, regardless of disciplinary differences in format preferences. The manual acknowledges variations in citation practices across fields, from the detailed references of humanities to the abbreviated styles of scientific and legal works. While offering a standard method for citation, it also accommodates modifications tailored to individual needs and subject requirements, provided these adhere to sound bibliographical principles. Writers are urged to adopt a systematic approach to recording references, avoiding common pitfalls like incomplete author names or publication details. Precision and consistency in citations not only save time but also reflect the rigor essential to scholarly work. The manual, therefore, is not just a technical guide but also a resource for cultivating habits of thoroughness and accuracy in academic writing, fostering both reliability and credibility. Taschenbuch. Condizione: Neu. Neuware - Cooper's Landscapes: An Essay on the Picturesque Vision delves into the vivid and enduring landscapes of James Fenimore Cooper's works, exploring how his descriptive artistry shaped the American literary imagination. This essay examines Cooper's unique ability to translate the grandeur of…early 19th-century America into powerful visual panoramas that resonate with readers long after the characters and plots fade. Drawing on insights from European aesthetic traditions and the picturesque conventions, the book highlights how Cooper's narrative settings were inspired by both his American roots and his transformative years abroad. This perspective not only contextualizes his work within the broader scope of art and landscape painting but also underscores Cooper's innovative approach to crafting scenes that intertwine with the thematic elements of his storytelling. The book also offers a fresh critique of Cooper's aesthetic education, focusing on his mastery of landscape organization, the influence of his European experiences, and his application of landscape gardening principles in fiction. From early romances like The Last of the Mohicans to the nuanced complexities of later works such as Wyandotte, the essay reveals how Cooper's visual imagination evolved to serve his narrative ambitions. By connecting Cooper's artistry to the broader Romantic movement and theories of visual perception, this study illuminates the profound interplay between literature and the sister arts, offering a rich framework for appreciating Cooper's enduring contributions to American cultural and literary history. Taschenbuch. Condizione: Neu. Neuware - This title is a detailed academic monograph that explores the use of linear and non-linear programming in economic theory, specifically applied to the theory of the firm. Originally developed as a doctoral dissertation at the University of California, the study draws heavily on contributio…ns from leading economists and mathematicians. The work acknowledges the influence of George Dantzig, who pioneered linear programming, as well as contributions from Professor G.C. Evans, who provided guidance on mathematical rigor. The monograph also recognizes Professor A.W. Tucker's foundational work on non-linear programming, which enabled the author's exploration of quadratic programming applications in monopolistic settings. The research, inspired by and partially funded through a United States Air Force initiative to advance administrative techniques, underscores the practical applications of programming theory within large organizations. This monograph emphasizes both the theoretical advances in economic modeling and the broader relevance of linear and quadratic programming approaches to real-world organizational challenges. Taschenbuch. Condizione: Neu. Neuware - In Medieval Poor Law: A Sketch of Canonical Theory and Its Application in England, Brian Tierney provides an insightful and groundbreaking exploration of the Church's pivotal role in the development of social services during the Middle Ages. Expanding on lectures delivered at UCLA, Tierney… examines the canonical framework established by the Decretum of Gratian in 1140 and its evolution through subsequent centuries of ecclesiastical legislation and commentary. He reveals how the Church functioned as a governing body parallel to secular authorities, shaping laws, administering aid, and developing principles of public assistance that predate the Elizabethan Poor Law of 1601 by centuries. Tierney's engaging analysis bridges the gap between medieval ecclesiastical jurisprudence and contemporary social welfare, offering both medievalists and modern social scientists a nuanced understanding of the enduring relevance of these early systems of poverty relief. Taschenbuch. Condizione: Neu. Neuware - This title compiles influential essays by Alfred Kroeber, written in the last decade of his life, reflecting his deep exploration of human culture, civilization, and history through an anthropological lens. Curated by Milton Singer and Theodora Kroeber, this collection showcases Kroeber's…unique perspective on the intersections of anthropology, history, and the humanities. Rather than focusing solely on ethnology or linguistic analysis, Kroeber broadens his scope to address questions about style, civilization patterns, and the historical continuity of cultures. His view of anthropology as a young, evolving science with ancient philosophical roots demonstrates his belief in the discipline's role in understanding human progress. The volume aims to engage both historians and anthropologists by presenting Kroeber's reflections on culture and the human condition, especially for a generation of scholars and students whose approach to anthropology is less historically oriented. Kroeber's personal approach to his field, developed over a lifetime of teaching and exploring anthropological themes such as 'Culture Growth,' emphasizes the evolving nature of culture as an 'aggregate' that shapes civilizations and values. By tracing Kroeber's intellectual journey, the book underscores the importance of historical context in anthropology, positioning it as a field capable of enriching broader humanistic inquiries and advancing our understanding of civilization's aesthetic, ethical, and structural evolution. Taschenbuch. Condizione: Neu. Neuware - Eugene Onegin, a narrative poem by Alexander Pushkin, is often regarded as his greatest work and a landmark of Russian literature. Written intermittently from 1823 to 1831, the poem is considered a masterpiece for its insightful portrayal of Russian society and its timeless depiction of lo…ve, regret, and the clash of characters and ideals. Pushkin's creation of Tatyana, the heroine, is especially notable, as she is viewed as the precursor to many of the compelling Russian women that would later appear in works by writers such as Turgenev, Dostoyevsky, and Tolstoy. This enduring legacy has made Eugene Onegin an essential text for students of Russian literature. The current translation draws heavily on Professor Patrick's meticulous prose version, which was carefully reviewed for accuracy. While earlier English translations have existed, such as Lieutenant-Colonel Spalding's 1881 edition, this translation aims to preserve the natural flow and grace of Pushkin's original. Pushkin's rhyme scheme, which follows a distinctive fourteen-line stanza with a specific rhyme pattern, has been adapted here to fit English while maintaining its musicality. The diction is intentionally informal to match Pushkin's ease of expression, with slight adjustments made for cultural nuances, especially in the portrayal of Tatyana's courageous declarations of love. This version also integrates Pushkin's original notes and helpful commentary to ensure readers can fully appreciate the depth of the poem. Taschenbuch. Condizione: Neu. Neuware - Manual of Textual Analysis offers a groundbreaking approach to textual analysis, specifically tailored to address the intricate challenges presented by the transmission and evolution of texts like the Greek New Testament. The methodology introduced here departs from traditional systems, re…defining the principles and techniques used to trace the genealogy of texts and their underlying ideas. While indebted to earlier methods such as Karl Lachmann's genealogical approach, Dom Henri Quentin's principle of exclusion, and Sir Walter Greg's calculus of variants, this work goes beyond their limitations to offer a comprehensive and logical framework for analyzing textual relationships. Central to this manual is the distinction between the text itself--a mental construct--and the manuscript as its physical carrier. This conceptual separation allows for a more nuanced understanding of textual evolution, especially in cases involving conflation or complex genealogical structures. With an emphasis on simplicity and clarity, the manual introduces new principles of exclusion and dating that make even the most intricate textual variations accessible for analysis. This work is an essential guide for scholars and students of textual criticism, providing tools to approach manuscripts with precision, evaluate their interrelations, and reconstruct their historical contexts. Rich with examples and enriched by contributions from experts across disciplines, it serves as a definitive resource for both foundational study and advanced research in textual analysis. Taschenbuch. Condizione: Neu. Neuware - The Life and Adventures of George Nidever: 1802-1883 is a fascinating window into the life of a quintessential American frontiersman whose journey spanned the rugged terrains of Tennessee, Missouri, and eventually California. Born in 1802, Nidever embodied the spirit of adventure and resil…ience that defined the pioneers of his time. His early years were marked by family migrations and frontier struggles, leading him to a life of hunting, trapping, and exploration. From harrowing encounters with Native American tribes to his participation in fur trapping expeditions and his role in Captain Joseph R. Walker's historic trek into California, Nidever's life story offers a vivid portrait of the perils and triumphs of life on the American frontier. This narrative also provides rare insights into the social and historical fabric of early California. Settling in Santa Barbara after years of adventure, Nidever became a celebrated hunter, a rescuer of the famed 'Lone Woman of San Nicolas Island,' and a participant in key moments like Fremont's campaign during the American conquest. Recorded in 1878 by Edward F. Murray, Nidever's firsthand account is both a tribute to his remarkable life and a significant contribution to the understanding of California's transition during the early 19th century. Rich with themes of courage, integrity, and the relentless pursuit of opportunity, Nidever's story captures the essence of the American pioneering spirit and the indelible mark left by figures like him on the nation's history. Taschenbuch. Condizione: Neu. Neuware - Alec Miller's Stone and Marble Carving: A Manual for the Student Sculptor is a rare blend of workshop craft and lived wisdom, distilling a lifetime at the bench into clear, practical guidance. Grounded in the Greek sense of technics championed by Ananda Coomaraswamy, the book moves beyond…aesthetics to the elemental disciplines of tool, material, and method. Miller demonstrates how stone itself shapes imagination and rigor, arguing for the sculptor's hand to remain present from first strike to final surface. His instruction on tools, processes, and finish is exacting yet approachable, offering students a durable foundation in direct carving and an antidote to derivative, studio-bound replication. Shaped by the Arts and Crafts lineage of Ruskin, Morris, and the Guild of Handicraft, Miller's manual restores the unity of conception and execution that modern practice too often divides. He situates technique within a moral discipline of foresight and integrity, reminding readers that stone carving's risks and irreversibility are the very sources of its ethical and artistic force. From architectural commissions to workshop axioms, the book models a standard of competence that is historical in its roots and forward-looking in its implications. For emerging sculptors and educators alike, this is an indispensable text on the craft that makes enduring form possible. Taschenbuch. Condizione: Neu. Neuware - Discipline and Discharge in the Unionized Firm delves into the transformation of employer-employee relations within unionized workplaces, specifically focusing on how the union contract impacts personnel policies, particularly in matters of discipline and discharge. Traditionally, manageme…nt held the authority to impose discipline and terminate employees for serious offenses, but unionization has reshaped this dynamic. Under union contracts, these rights are constrained by arbitration decisions and the grievance procedure, where management must justify disciplinary actions. Professor Orme W. Phelps provides a comprehensive analysis of this evolution, exploring the nuances of how unions and arbitrators influence the administration of discipline. Drawing heavily on arbitration awards, his study reveals a clear set of semitechnical rules developed over time, outlining proper grounds for discipline, procedures, and acceptable penalties, all within the framework of just cause. This study also emphasizes the pivotal role of arbitration in shaping the discipline process in unionized firms. By analyzing major arbitration cases and early precedent-setting decisions, Phelps identifies key tests and principles that govern disciplinary actions, such as the burden of proof, industry practice, and consistency. The work contrasts the unionized firm's approach to discipline with that of unorganized firms, where managerial discretion is less restrained. Through this, the study highlights the necessity for management to understand the complexities and the evolving standards of labor arbitration to avoid costly errors in disciplinary actions. This thorough examination is not only a valuable resource for industrial relations scholars but also serves as a practical guide for employers navigating the challenges of discipline in unionized environments. Taschenbuch. Condizione: Neu. Neuware - The Structure of Transcontinental Railroad Rates by Stuart Daggett and John P. Carter provides a detailed examination of how freight rate systems shaped--and constrained--the economic life of California during the mid-twentieth century. Drawing on published tariffs from 1943-1944 and compa…rative data supplied by carriers, the authors unpack the mechanics of rate-making, the geography of western rail routes, and the competitive interplay between railroads, highways, and intercoastal shipping. Their analysis foregrounds the immense challenges of distance, topography, and sparse population across the intermountain states, while also showing how carriers maintained dense main-line traffic despite weak local originations. The book illuminates how elevation, curvature, and ruling grades translated directly into costs and, in turn, into the complex tariff structures governing California's eastbound and westbound trade. Beyond physical geography, the study delves into the institutional frameworks of rate bureaus, the distinctions between class and commodity rates, and innovations such as all-freight rates introduced to meet highway and water competition. With careful attention to technical detail, Daggett and Carter reveal the ways tariffs grouped western termini, segmented eastern destinations, and influenced pricing outcomes for commodities ranging from perishables to manufactured goods. While acknowledging the methodological challenges of sampling and causal inference, they nonetheless present a clear and systematic account of transcontinental freight charges as both an economic reality and a policy issue. For historians of transportation, economists of infrastructure, and policy specialists concerned with the integration of regional markets, this monograph remains an invaluable resource for understanding how railroad rates underpinned California's wartime and postwar development. Taschenbuch. Condizione: Neu. Neuware - The Mexican Profit-Sharing Decision: Politics in an Authoritarian Regime offers an incisive exploration of the mechanisms and implications of decision-making within the unique political structure of mid-20th-century Mexico. The book delves into President López Mateos's decision to implemen…t the profit-sharing provisions outlined in Mexico's 1917 Constitution, a redistributive policy that aimed to allocate a portion of industrial profits to workers. This decision is not only significant in its immediate economic and social impacts but also in the light it sheds on Mexico's broader authoritarian regime, where power flows from the executive rather than grassroots demands. Through this case study, the book examines the interaction between key interest groups--organized labor, private sector business leaders, and the ruling Partido Revolucionario Institucional (PRI)--within the tightly controlled political framework. Drawing on a combination of official documents, unpublished communications, and interviews with key stakeholders, the author offers a detailed reconstruction of the decision-making process. The study underscores the tension between inclusivity and control in Mexico's authoritarian system, where the PRI simultaneously incorporated labor movements into its structure while maintaining executive dominance. This case provides broader insights into the symbolic and practical roles of political legitimacy, economic redistribution, and the strategies used to manage conflicts in an ostensibly non-repressive authoritarian regime. As a result, the book contributes not only to the understanding of Mexican politics but also to the study of authoritarian systems worldwide, offering valuable lessons on the dynamics of governance, economic reform, and the role of symbolic politics in sustaining regime stability. Taschenbuch. Condizione: Neu. Neuware - Behavior and Psychological Man: Essays in Motivation and Learning is a collection of Edward Chace Tolman's seminal papers, tracing the evolution of his systematic theory of purposive behaviorism. Compiled by former students and colleagues, this anthology not only honors Tolman's contributi…ons during his tenure at the University of California but also serves as a valuable psychological document. The essays illustrate the trajectory of Tolman's thinking, from its nascent stages to a mature, albeit continually evolving, framework that integrates experimental findings with theoretical innovation. Tolman's work is characterized by its breadth and inclusivity, embracing all aspects of psychological inquiry. His insistence on exploring behavior as multidetermined led to the development of a system that encompassed learning, motivation, perception, and personality. A pioneer in the use of hypothetical constructs and intervening variables, Tolman advanced a centralist approach to psychology, bridging behaviorism, Gestalt theory, and depth psychology. His emphasis on molar behavior and cognitive maps reintroduced complexity and purposiveness to psychological theory, transforming how learning, problem-solving, and human behavior are understood. This collection, which combines rigorous science with Tolman's characteristic wit and creativity, not only captures the essence of his theories but also reflects the humanistic and collaborative spirit that defined his teaching and scientific legacy. Taschenbuch. Condizione: Neu. Neuware - After 50 years of analysis we are only beginning to understand the quality and complexity of Alban Berg's most important twelve-tone work, the opera Lulu. Patricia Hall's new book represents a primary contribution to that understanding--the first detailed analysis of the sketches for the o…pera as well as other related autograph material and previously inaccessible correspondence to Berg. In 1959, Berg's widow deposited the first of Berg's autograph manuscripts in the Austrian National Library. The complete collection of autographs for Lulu was made accessible to scholars in 1981, and a promising new phase in Lulu scholarship unfolded. Hall begins her study by examining the format and chronology of the sketches, and she demonstrates their unique potential to clarify aspects of Berg's compositional language. In each chapter Hall uses Berg's sketches to resolve a significant problem or controversy that has emerged in the study of Lulu. For example, Hall discusses the dramatic symbolism behind Berg's use of multiple roles and how these roles contribute to the large-scale structure of the opera. She also revises the commonly held view that Berg frequently invoked a free twelve-tone style. Hall's innovative work suggests important techniques for understanding not only the sketches and manuscripts of Berg but also those of other twentieth-century composers. Taschenbuch. Condizione: Neu. Neuware - Marius: On the Elements is a groundbreaking exploration of twelfth-century scientific thought, revealing the remarkable intellectual rigor and experimental focus of its time. Written by the enigmatic figure Marius, this treatise delves into the nature of matter, the composition of elements…, and their interactions, employing a dialogue format between teacher and student to engage readers in a systematic inquiry. The text is significant for its advanced treatment of material theory, presenting a quantitative framework for understanding how the diversity of the natural world arises from four fundamental elements. Through experiments, observations, and the rejection of magical explanations, Marius establishes a naturalistic and methodical approach that challenges contemporary accounts of medieval science as overly mystical or unstructured. Despite the scarcity of biographical details about Marius, the text's connections to both Arabic and Greek influences underscore the dynamic exchange of knowledge in medieval Europe. Marius synthesizes insights from sources such as Isaac Israeli, pseudo-Aristotelian works, and emerging Latin translations of Arabic texts, while also incorporating his own innovative perspectives on substance and composition. His work stands as a testament to the intellectual vitality of the period, pushing the boundaries of understanding while shaping the course of medieval natural philosophy. This treatise remains a vital resource for scholars studying the evolution of scientific methodologies and the cultural exchanges that defined the intellectual landscape of the Middle Ages. Taschenbuch. Condizione: Neu. Neuware - Ibn Khaldun in Egypt: His Public Functions and His Historical Research (1382-1406) offers a deep exploration of the transformative years the renowned scholar spent in Cairo, highlighting his dual roles as a public figure and a pioneering historian. While widely celebrated for his Muqaddima…h, Ibn Khaldun's contributions during his 23 years in Egypt demonstrate the breadth of his intellectual pursuits and the complexity of his character. The book delves into his multifaceted public career, including his service to the Mamluk rulers as a diplomat, educator, and Chief Qadi of the Maliki school. It also recounts his dramatic meeting with the conqueror Tamerlane and examines his struggles to balance his political engagements with his passion for scholarship. Despite these challenges, Ibn Khaldun emerged as a pivotal figure in Mamluk society, navigating the tension between wielding influence and retreating into the seclusion of academic life. In addition to chronicling his public functions, the book highlights the significant scholarly achievements of Ibn Khaldun during his time in Egypt. It reveals how his residence in Cairo and access to Eastern sources enabled him to revise and expand his earlier works, including the Muqaddimah, and to engage with new fields of historical research. His studies ranged from the political intricacies of Mamluk Egypt to the histories of Mongol conquests and pre-Islamic civilizations. This period also saw him produce a biography of Sultan Barquq, examine the spiritual and intellectual legacies of Judaism, Christianity, and Zoroastrianism, and compose his revealing Autobiography (Ta'rif). By illuminating this often-overlooked phase of Ibn Khaldun's life, the book provides a richer understanding of his unparalleled contributions to Islamic and global historiography. Taschenbuch. Condizione: Neu. Neuware - Given the intense competition among aristocrats seeking public office in the middle and late Roman Republic, one would expect that their persistent struggles for honor, glory, and power could have seriously undermined the state or damaged the cohesiveness of the ruling class. Rome in fact…depended on aristocratic competition, since no professional bureaucracy directed public affairs and no salary was attached to any public office. But as Rosenstein adeptly shows, competition appears to have been surprisingly limited, in ways that curtailed the possible destructive effects of all-out contests between individuals. Imperatores Victi examines one particularly striking case of such checks on competition. Military success at all times represented an abundant source of prestige and political strength at Rome. Generals who led armies to victory enjoyed a better-than-average chance of securing higher office upon their return from the field. Yet this study demonstrates that defeated generals were not barred from public office and in fact went on to win the Republic's most highly coveted and hotly contested offices in numbers virtually identical with those of their undefeated peers. Rosenstein explores how this unexpected limit to competition functions, reviewing beliefs about the religious origins of defeat, assumptions about common soldiers' duties in battle, and definitions of honorable behavior of an aristocrat during a crisis. These perspectives were instrumental in shifting the onus of failure away from a general's person and in offering positive strategies a general might use to win glory and respect even in defeat and to silence potential critics among a failed general's peers. Such limits to competition had an impact on the larger problems of stability and coherence in the Republic and its political elite; these larger problems are discussed in the concluding chapter.
