FROM THE DUST-JACKET WRITE UP : "The triumphant expedition of Charles VIII of France to Naples in 1494 and his forced marches back through Italy the next year have been chronicled by many writers, from varying points of view. They have also described the important battle of Fornovo, at which Charles was opposed by massed troops representing the League formed by the Venetian Senate, Lodovico Sforza of Milan, Maximilian I, Pope Alexander VI, and Ferdinand and Isabella of Spain -- the first time since ancient Rome that Italians had united against a foreign invader. The hideous siege of Novara which followed has had a prominent in these accounts. "Alessandro Benedetti holds an important and distinctive rank among these writers. At home in the humanities as well as in medicine, he created in the 'Diaria' a document of unique value both as history and as literature. Benedetti was eyewitness to many of the events that he relates, and he provides for the general historian rich details recorded nowhere else.
