Paperback. Condizione: new. Paperback. Europe has to come to terms with its increasing cultural diversity. In current debate migration is typically presented merely as a social burden. This book envisions a future in which native Europeans and those with a migrant background together the New Europeans come to the conclusion that… they should build a new society jointly. An inclusive European society can be generated by launching a common project as an alternative to neoliberalism, developing an economy that is at the service of society. For this, democratic ownership should be the lever. In that process, migrants will be important and resilient catalysts. The book sets out a roadmap for what the future could look like, presenting a vision of Europe at the end of the 21st century as a real Utopia. This book bucks the trend of depressing accounts on migration from outside Europe. It offers a promissory narrative for the continents long-term future. Drawing on political, sociological, economic and philosophical insights, the author sticks his neck out, provokes perhaps, but always with the invitation for a constructive dialogue. After a symmetric learning process of mutual integration, native Europeans and those with a migrant background will conclude that they should build a new society jointly and launch a common project for democratic governance of the economy. A roadmap is set out for what Europe could look like at the end of the 21st century, as a real Utopia. Paperback. Condizione: new. Paperback. This book examines the position of black and mixed-race characters in Irish film culture. By exploring key film and television productions from the 1990s to the present day, the author uncovers and interrogates concepts of Irish identity, history and nation. In 2009, Ireland had the highest… birth rate in Europe, with almost 24 per cent of births attributed to the new Irish. By 2013, 17 per cent of the nation was foreign-born. Ireland has always been a culturally diverse space and has produced a series of high-profile mixed-race stars, including Phil Lynott, Ruth Negga and Simon Zebo, among others. Through an analysis of screen visualizations of the black Irish, this study uncovers forgotten histories, challenges the perceived homogeneity of the nation, evaluates integration, and considers the future of the new Ireland. It makes a creative and significant theoretical contribution to scholarly work on the relationship between representation and identity in Irish cinema. This book was the winner of the 2011 Peter Lang Young Scholars Competition in Irish Studies. This book examines the position of black and mixed-race characters in Irish film culture. They became walking reminders of the conflict and their experiences reveal the impact of the war not only on the combatants but also on European societies at large. This book explores for the first time th…e individual and collective significance of facially disfigured First World War combatants in France, Germany and Great Britain. The analysis undertaken in this book uncovers how the wounded perceived and presented themselves and how they were perceived and represented by others. Artistic and literary representations are considered, along with initiatives carried out by hospitals, the government and the combatants fellow countrymen. With an interdisciplinary and comparative approach, this study illuminates our understanding of how the combatant and the onlooker made sense of the experience and the memory of the war. Paperback. Condizione: new. Paperback. Since the end of the Second World War, the role of the United States in the international arena has been closely linked to the stability of its security alliance system. For strategic reasons, one of the major goals for the U.S. foreign policy has always been preventing the rise of a hegemo…nic power in Eurasia. Actually, history and geopolitics tend to show that the global balance of power strictly depends on dynamics, threats and acting players in Eurasia. Despite Chinas growing global influence, it is in Asia-Pacific that the Chinese quest for power has played out more vividly. In this framework, the partnership between Russia and China represents a source of worries for the West as a whole and, more specifically, the gravest strategic threat to U.S. overseas interests. The book analyze the current U.S. alliance system across Eurasia through a multidisciplinary approach, combining history and political science, past and current affairs, and outlining possible future scenarios. They will focus on the Western allies and partners and the Chinese perceptions of the U.S.-led security system seen as a direct threat. Paperback. Condizione: new. Paperback. Cold War Narratives reveals the power that representations, understood as both cultural production and public discourse, have held in shaping the imaginaries of early Cold War America. By engaging conflicting accounts of the 1950s as either affirmations of a prosperous and confident nation…(in TV shows, popular sociology, and advertising) or as critiques of a society in the throes of fear, rebelliousness, and inequality (in film, literature, and media), this study sheds new light on the ambivalent imaginaries of the American 1950s. Pitting visions of the Red Scare and of nuclear proliferation against narratives of an upbeat nation, eager to suburbanize and to adopt the new ethics of televised consensus, Cold War Narratives illustrates how Americas leading metaphors of conformity shaped problematic gender roles, domesticity and consumption in the 1950s. It also exposes how dissenting voices to the Cold War consensus converged around the affirmation of specific identitarian discourses, especially highlighting the agency of youth and of the rising civil rights movement, and the way in which these two entered into unprecedented dialog through new discursive formations such as beat culture and rock n roll. By engaging conflicting accounts of the 1950s as either affirmations of a prosperous and confident nation (in TV shows, popular sociology, and advertising) or as critiques of a society in the throes of fear, rebelliousness, and inequality (in film, literature, and media), this study focuses on the ambivalent imaginaries of the American 1950s. Paperback. Condizione: new. Paperback. Sigmund Freuds theories and clinical practices focused primarily on individuals. As such, they are rarely considered when critiquing collective behavior or symbolic re-presentations. However, as the founder of depth psychology a field of study that considers how unconscious components of th…e human experience influence psychological conditions Freud understood the collective nature of thought and behavior. While his ideas are not typically a perspective applied to the study of media and popular culture, of audiences, or of content creation, once unpacked through a psychoanalytic lens, Freuds theories shine a bright light on human motivation and expression. This book is the first presentation of his ideas within this context. It is primarily an introduction to Freud and his theories intended for a communication studies audience. In addition to summarizing Freuds major concepts, how/when/if they are taught in psychology programs, and the resultant "Freud Wars," this book offers examples of application of his ideas to cinema, advertising, public relations, and other forms of expression and recommendations for future research. There are implications and applications to the everyday world as well for anyone interested in how theories of human development, beginning with childhood personality construction through adult sexuality, repression, and expression, can be understood through a contemporary lens."Of all of the contentious and oft-misconstrued figures in the history of ideas, few provide such a thorny and frustrating subject as Sigmund Freud. In this short-butsubstantial book, Deb Merskin gives us a considerate and approachable understanding of Freuds work. She begins with a biographical sketch of Freud, builds on this foundation to outline the full spectrum of Freuds theoretical interventions. With the basic rhythms and motifs established, Merskin then combines all of these elements to develop a symphonic sense of what Freuds ideas can contribute to communication and media studies, with emphases on social theory, film theory, advertising, political communication, media psychology, and cultural studies. Here is a true introduction to Freuds ideas as they relate to communication and media studies."David W. Park, Lake Forest College Provides an overview of Freuds psychoanalytic theories and uses them as a lens through which to view media and popular culture. The book reviews how Freuds theories have been applied to the study of film, advertising, news, and public relations, and discusses how scholars can use Freuds ideas as tools to understand contemporary experiences. Paperback. Condizione: new. Paperback. With increasingly globalised markets, changing consumer preferences and the steady development of technologies influencing food trade flows, safety and quality concerns have triggered the development of new forms of global (food) governance. Since its creation in 1995, the World Trade Organ…ization (WTO) has succeeded in providing a multilateral legal framework for the development of regulatory practices through its multiple agreements. Similarly, the continuing importance of regional and bilateral trade agreements, such as in the European Union and in Switzerland, has enhanced WTOs accomplishments through a comprehensive and dynamic set of international rules and standards for trade. However, the changing trends in the production and distribution of food products have questioned the effectiveness of the regulatory status quo. This book addresses the legal aspects of the current global architecture for food governance, particularly with regard to the role of international standards. In doing so, this work attempts at mapping the implications of domestic food measures in international trade law. Since its creation in 1995, the World Trade Organization (WTO) has succeeded in providing a multilateral legal framework for the development of regulatory practices through its multiple agreements. Hardcover. Condizione: new. Hardcover. The fifteenth and sixteenth centuries saw a significant rhetorical shift that has long influenced French literature. In this period, poets began to describe themselves as orators. Their verse was addressed to various audiences, both real or fictional. It was judged on its eloquence, public…utility, and ability to engage with contemporary concerns and events. This book endeavours to shed light on this unique moment of interplay between poetry and communication, through an interdisciplinary framework that draws on approaches from rhetoric, philology, and communication studies. Through eight case studies, this book explores a little-known history of French literature, from George Chastelain to Ronsard, including poets such as Guillaume Cretin, Jean Lemaire de Belges, Octovien de Saint-Gelais, Jean Molinet, Jean Bouchet, Nicaise Ladam and Francois Habert. Between the 15th and 16th centuries, French poets redefined themselves as orators, valuing eloquence, utility, and contemporary engagement. This book examines this interplay between poetry and communication through eight case studies, from Chastelain to Ronsard, integrating rhetoric, philology, and communication studies. Paperback. Condizione: new. Paperback. Invisibility Studies explores current changes in the relationship between what we consider visible and what invisible in different areas of contemporary culture. Contributions trace how these changes make their marks on various cultural fields and investigate the cultural significance of th…ese developments, such as transparency and privacy in urban architecture and the silent invasion of surveillance technologies into everyday life. The book contends that when it comes to the changing relationship of the visible and the invisible, the connection between seeing and not being seen is an exchange conditioned by physical and social settings that create certain possibilities for visibility and visuality, yet exclude others. The richness and complexity of this cultural framework means that no single discipline or interdisciplinary approach could capture it single-handedly. Invisibility Studies begins this conversation by bringing together scholars across the fields of architectural history and theory, art, film and literature, philosophy, cultural theory and contemporary anthropology as well as featuring work by a collective of artists. Invisibility Studies explores current changes in the relationship between what we consider visible and what invisible in different areas of contemporary culture. Contributions trace the cultural significance of these developments, such as transparency and privacy in urban architecture and the invasion of surveillance into everyday life. Paperback. Condizione: new. Paperback. White supremacy and American-style individual autonomy are mutually supportive and co-dependent. Attacking white racism will not dislodge white supremacy, which the author contends is the greatest danger facing America. That can only be accomplished by making concurrent and significant modi…fications in American individualism. Yet, white supremacist thinking, feeling, and acting and American individualism are protected by what the author describes as The White Supremacist Collective Unconscious, a culturally determined mental construct that Americans assimilate as they grow into adulthood, which endows all Americans, regardless of race, with a white supremacist mental orientation to one degree or another. Drawing on his personal experiences as an African American growing up in the United States, and on his research, the author details the development and workings of that unconscious, and the impact of white supremacy on the national character. In this provocative, personal, and engaging volume, so timely in its intervention, Ronald Richardson gives us a new way of looking at ourselves, how we came to be, and the inescapable role white supremacy has played in the unfolding.Henry Louis Gates, Jr., Alphonse Fletcher University Professor, Harvard UniversityThis is a brave and candid book centered on the psychology and vexed history of race and the white ascendency in the United States. The gaze is unblinking, the analysis rigorous, and the conclusions judicious. Professor Richardson has composed a most impressive study, drawing on the provocative ideas of varied thinkersamong whom Fanon, Jung, Kierkegaard, Kakuzo Okakuraand his own experience, stretching from childhood to youth to distinguished scholar.David Mayers is Professor, History Department, Political Science Department, Boston University This book describes the devastating impact of white supremacy and its co-dependent style of individual autonomy on African Americans and on American culture and society. It reveals the hidden workings of white supremacy in the American psyche, its destructive effects in the family, and its profoundly dangerous threat to American democracy. Paperback. Condizione: new. Paperback. From the first stirrings of modernism to contemporary poetics, the modernist aesthetic project could be described as a form of phenomenological reduction that attempts to return to the invisible and unsayable foundations of human perception and expression, prior to objective points of view…and scientific notions. It is this aspect of modernism that this book brings to the fore. The essays presented here bring into focus the contemporary face of ongoing debates about phenomenology and modernism. The contributors forcefully underline the intertwining of modernism and phenomenology and the extent to which the latter offers a clue to the former. The book presents the viewpoints of a range of internationally distinguished critics and scholars, with diverse but closely related essays covering a wide range of fields, including literature, architecture, philosophy and musicology. The collection addresses critical questions regarding the relationship between phenomenology and modernism, with reference to thinkers such as Edmund Husserl, Maurice Merleau-Ponty, Martin Heidegger, Michel Henry and Paul Ricoeur. By examining the contemporary philosophical debates, this cross-disciplinary body of research reveals the pervasive and far-reaching influence of phenomenology, which emerges as a heuristic method to articulate modernist aesthetic concerns. Presents the viewpoints of a range of internationally distinguished critics and scholars, with diverse but closely related essays covering a wide range of fields, including literature, architecture, philosophy and musicology. Paperback. Condizione: new. Paperback. Often equated with control and domination, mastery, if left unchecked, leads to annihilation and colonization of otherness. Mastery is also evident in intellectual humility, in conceding that humans will only ever have a partial understanding of the universe. This partiality is a gift. Our…greatest teacher, the Earth, shows ecological mastery independent of human minds. Early modern Westerners, the Renaissance humanists, were comfortable living with the unknown. Treating modernity and mastery with compassion, the author explores how scarcity and abundance affect our relationship to the strangeness inside, between and around us. We ache to recall a humbler, pluralistic, non-colonial ethos. Old earthen ways lie waiting for us to take them up again. Using vibrant paintings and accessible prose, the author illustrates the mastery of living well with those we dont understand. This book summons Westerners home to forgotten wisdom and to respectful, non-colonizing relations with otherness. In a culture fetishizing Mastery as dominance, control, hyper-efficiency, all linked to a desire for competitive advantage and security, this beautifully written book by Tanya Behrisch shows how there is also co-incidentally an other way, more whole-some and life-giving. Drawing on her experience as artist, corporate manager, student and observant lover of the greater-than-human world, Behrisch intricately reveals the paradoxical, indeed interpenetrating organic relationship between making and unmaking, grasping and letting go, closure and openness, completeness and indeterminacy. For a time when an old order seems to be dis-integrating, this is a truly important study. David Geoffrey Smith, PhD, Professor Emeritus, University of Alberta, Canada While we strive to master a skill, mastery is linked to hierarchies; unchecked, it colonizes otherness. Using oil painting, the author guides us to buried Western traditions of epistemic humility and tolerance for plurality occluded by popular tropes of modernity and the West. She invites readers to practice facing otherness with compassion. Shipping may be from multiple locations in the US or from the UK, depending on stock availability.

Paperback. Condizione: new. Paperback. The Olympic torch relay held before the 2008 Games was the moment when East met West on the media stage. This book analyses the torch relay and its representation, offering a discursive construction of Olympic ideology by and through the media in both East and West. The author argues that t…he discourse used by the media in different social contexts reflected the diversity of ideologies and cultural values with which the Olympic flame was imbued. A corpus-based Discourse-Historical Approach in Critical Discourse Analysis (DHA-CDA) is applied to media discourse in the United Kingdom and in China to examine the complexity, contradiction and conflicts in linguistic interpretations of Olympic ideology. Corpora drawn from the China Daily, BBC News and The Guardian are described, interpreted in their linguistic contexts, and then explained in terms of the broader historical and socio-political contexts surrounding the dynamic life of the Olympic torch relay. This unique study sheds light on the significance of the Olympic Games for East-West media discourse and analysis. Using a corpus-based Discourse-Historical Approach in Critical Discourse Analysis, the author analyses the representation of the 2008 Olympic torch relay in the British and Chinese media, shedding light on the importance of the Olympic Games for EastWest media discourse and analysis. Paperback. Condizione: new. Paperback. This volume examines the potentially deleterious impact of place branding on the social fabric, ecosystems and local economies of the places concerned. As the different essays show, place branding is a fundamentally political practice, often driven by hidden agendas that marginalize certain… groups within society. Contributors explore place branding from a wide variety of angles, including: the role played by the visual arts in city branding; the applied arts, and speci cally the fashion industrys potential for shaping perceptions of a particular place; the different ways in which sport has been exploited by the political elites; the role of design in place branding, including the architectural design of sports stadia; and the potentially insidious economic and societal consequences of excessive consumption of branded places. By exploring the often hidden ideological agenda(s) of place branding, and analyzing the ways in which practitioners often marginalize, or ignore, local stakeholders on the ground, this volume of essays offers a fresh and topical perspective on an extremely important subject. Paperback. Condizione: new. Paperback. This book uncovers an ancient Irish perspective of learning and reconfigures it to offer a vitality-restoring vision for education in our digital age. Its aim is to help re-engage learners of the Net generation meaningfully and with enjoyment in the learning process. The proliferation of ne…w technologies in the classroom has generally not been accompanied by new pedagogical thinking and the discourse is still framed almost exclusively in terms of the utilitarian mindset of the Western world. Consequently, education is too often delivered within a context that is unfit for purpose. The author argues that we need to bring the wisdom of different cultural perspectives to bear on our understanding of the nature and purpose of learning, and on the role of technology in the learning process. She shares an energising vision of education based on the ancient Irish understanding of learning as nourishment for the human spirit, expressed as learning by wandering. Illustrating the universal and timeless relevance of this understanding, she demonstrates from personal experience how a synthesis of ancient wisdom and new technologies can transform the learning process. This book offers a new dimension to the ongoing debate on the future of education in the Western world. Uncovers an ancient Irish perspective of learning and reconfigures it to offer a vitality-restoring vision for education in our digital age. This book aims to help re-engage learners of the Net generation meaningfully and with enjoyment in the learning process. Paperback. Condizione: new. Paperback. This collection of essays on Francis Bacon (1909-1992) pays tribute to the legacy, influence and power of his art. The volume widens the relevance of Bacon in the twenty-first century and looks at new ways of thinking about or reframing him. The contributors consider the interdisciplinary s…cope of Bacons work, which addresses issues in architecture, continental philosophy, critical theory, gender studies and the sociology of the body, among others. Bacons work is also considered in relation to other artists, philosophers and writers who share similar concerns. The innovation of the volume lies in this move away from both an art historical framework and a focus on the artists biographical details, in order to concentrate on new perspectives, such as how current scholars in different disciplines consider Bacon, what his relevance is to a contemporary audience, and the wider themes and issues that are raised by his work. Paperback. Condizione: new. Paperback. Originating in the conference held at the University of Cambridge in 2009, this collection of essays includes a range of innovative papers from across the diverse field of French and Francophone studies. From medieval texts to the dramatization of the novel, from postcolonial writing to the… politics of film and the bande dessinee, the articles in this collection draw on recent developments in the theories of adaptation, translation, and cultural and textual transition. In keeping with these developments, they move the notion of adaptation away from questions of authenticity and fidelity, thinking instead about the movement across texts and time, and the way such movement generates new meanings. Offering insightful approaches to its subjects of study, the book is an engaging contribution to this growing area of research. Modern French Identities focuses on the French and Francophone writing of the twentieth and twenty-first centuries, whose formal experiments and revisions of genre have combined to create an entirely new set of literary forms. The series publishes studies of individual authors and artists, comparative studies and interdisciplinary projects. Paperback. Condizione: new. Paperback. How do we approach other peoples pain? This question is of crucial importance to the humanities, particularly literary and cultural studies, whenever they address narratives of terror and genocide, injustice and oppression, violence and trauma. Talking about other peoples pain inevitably dr…aws attention to the ethical dimension involved in acknowledging stories and histories of violence while avoiding an appropriation by the reading public, literary critics or cultural historians alike of the traumatic experiences themselves. The question of how to do justice to the others pain calls for an academic response that reflects as much on its own status as ethical agent as on literary expression and philosophical accounts or theoretical descriptions. This volume therefore explores the theoretical framework of trauma studies and its place within academic discourse and society, and examines from a multidisciplinary perspective the possibilities and limitations of trauma as an analytical category. A variety of case studies on individual and collective traumatic experiences as portrayed in literature and art highlight the ethical implications involved in the production, reception and analysis of other peoples pain. How do we approach other people's pain? This volume explores the theoretical framework of trauma studies and its place within academic discourse and society, and examines from a multidisciplinary perspective the possibilities and limitations of trauma as an analytical category.
