This was aided considerably by a deepening of our understanding of the relevant reaction mechanisms. Organometallic chemistry is the bridge par excellence between the traditional fields of inorganic and organiC chemistry. It was the intention of the 'Volkswagen-Stiftung' to broaden this bridge by starting in 1986 the new interdisciplinary program 'Organic Synthesis via Organo metallics'. From its very beginning this program grew up after 6 years to now more than 60 projects and its encompasses besides its main topic 'Organic Synthesis' mechanistic and structural aspects of organometallic chemistry as well. In a series of symposia sponsored by the 'Volkswagen-Stiftung', the former of which were held in Hamburg (February 1986), Wiirzburg (October 1988) and Marburg (July 1990), a forum for intensive discussions and SCientific exchange was established. There, scientists participating in the program met with other experts form academia and from industry. The forth symposium was held in Aachen from July 15 to 18, 1992. 236 pp. Deutsch.

Der Anwender in der Praxis muß zwar mit den physikalischen Grundlagen des Leitungsmechanismus elektronischer Bauelemente ausreichend vertraut sein, ihn interessieren aber in erster Linie die Größen, die er den Datenbüchern der Hersteller entnehmen kann, nämlich Gleich- und Wechselstromeigenschaften sowie Grenzwerte. Sie werden in den speziellen Kapiteln ausführlich behandelt. Die Einteilung der Halbleiterbauelemente in den weiteren Kapiteln er folgt zum einen nach der Anzahl der vorhandenen PN-Übergänge (homogenes und/oder polykristallines Material, Dioden, Transistoren und Vierschichtbau elemente, z. B. Thyristoren) und zum anderen nach den Steuerungsprinzip. Dieses Schema hat sich gut bewährt. Der Studierende soll als angehender Ingenieur in die Lage versetzt werden, Schaltungen selbst zu dimensionieren, wobei sich die wesentliche Schwierig keit erfahrungsgemäß immer dann ergibt, wenn zwar das Verständnis für die Funktionsweise der Schaltungen im Prinzip vorhanden ist, bei der praktischen Realisierung - allein schon hinsichtlich der Wahl geeigneter Komponenten große Unsicherheiten auftreten. Eines vermag dieses Werk nicht zu geben: 'Kochrezepte' oder Bastelanwei sungen für spezielle Anwendungen, wie es häufig von Studierenden gewünscht wird, die nicht in der Lage sind, den Kern des Problems zu erkennen und das wesentliche vom exemplarischen Einzelfall zu abstrahieren.

In view of the difficulties involved in formul…ating such a test case, requiring the availability of an experimental data base, extreme care had to be taken in the selection of the proper one. Professor I. L. Ryhming's proposal, that the flow through a Francis turbine configuration or parts thereof would be feasible as a test case, because of the numerical challenges as well as the possibility to produce an experimental data base by using the experimental facilities of the Hydraulic Machines and Fluid Mechanics Institute (IMHEF) at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Lausanne (EPFL), was accepted by the GAMM Committee in April 1987. A scientific committee, formed under the chairmanship of Professor I. L. Ryhming, met a few times to decide on the Francis turbine configuration, the test case specifications, etc. , whereby the design input came from the water turbine experts. This committee decided to restrict the studies to the three following typical applications for the best operating point of the turbine: - simulation of the 3D flow in a Francis runner in rotation - simulation of the 3D flow in the distributor (stay and guide vane rings) of this turbine - simulation of the 3D flow in an elbow draft tube The simultaneous computation of two or three of these geometries was encouraged. 244 pp. Englisch.

As a study in Comparative Literature - with the application of a specific literary…framework and methodology - the study conforms to theoretical and methodological postulates formulated in and prescribed by this framework when applied. This a priori postulate necessitates that the research on and the presentation of the Canadian novel preface be carried out in a specific manner, as follows. First, the study will establish the hypothesis that the preface to nineteenth-century English-Canadian and French-Canadian novels is a genre in its own right. This hypothesis will rest on the following: 1) a taxonomical survey of related terms meaning 'preface'; 2) a survey of secondary Iiterature of works dealing with the preface; 3) a discussion of the theoretical framework and methodology of the Empirical Theory of Literature and its appropriateness for the study of the preface; and 4) a discussion of the process of the compilation of the corpus of nineteenth-century Canadian novel prefaces (Chapter one). In a second step, the theoretical postulate outlined in the hypothesis will be put into practice by the development and production of a preface typology (Chapter two). In a third step, further tenets of the Empirical Theory of Literature will be tested on the corpus of the prefaces (Chapter three). They were se lected in order to cover the state of the art of knowledge in fault-detection and dam age assessment, system identification, signal processing, mathematical and physical modelling and applications of techniques such as fuzzy logic and neural networks. The emphasis was placed on the exploitation and understanding of nonlinearity arising from structural or material faults. Figure 1 indicates the range of topics covered in the workshop. Since no unique or general approach yet exists for treating nonlinearity in the field of safety evaluation, many of the topics presented were problem specific. Das Buch ist aus einer Vorlesung hervorgegangen, die der Verfasser in den Jahren 1991 und 1992 im Fachbereich Physik an der Johannes Gutenberg U niversitat Mainz gehalten hat.
