Paperback. Condizione: Good. In this new study we have a comprehensive account of Jefferson's religious thought, one that provides information about his beliefs and practices that will help remove any misconceptions about his religious life. Jefferson has long been recognized as a creative thinker ahead of his time. As this book makes clear, he was deeply interested in religious questions that the passing years have made more important. Beyond such obvious issues as war and peace, social justice, and racism, he confronted religious and theological problems that have increasingly concerned later religious thinkers.…

Hardback. Condizione: Good. The Lost Cause ideology that emerged after the Civil War and flourished in the early twentieth century sought to recast a struggle to perpetuate a slaveholding culture as a heroic defense of the South. As Adam Domby reveals in his new book, this was not only an insidious goal; it was founded on falsehoods.…

Hardback. Condizione: Very Good. Thomas Jefferson's was one of history's greatest voices for the importance of individual freedom. His eloquence on this fundamental right became the cornerstone of our nation and a central theme of the Enlightenment. And yet Jefferson presided over a society that depended on slavery, and he was himself the holder of many slaves. How are students of history to reconcile this contradiction in the third president? Now the celebrated biographer and historian Natalie Bober presents a life of Jefferson that does not evade this difficult question. Bober explores the slave community that built and maintained his home, Monticello - and what their lives under Jefferson tell us about him and about slavery as an early American institution. To assess fully what Jefferson might mean to our time, we must first understand what it meant to be a man of his own time. From the first page, the world he inhabited is made vivid - and so, too, is Jefferson himself, standing before us as a shy, freckle-faced, and, for the eighteenth century, unusually tall young man. Bober follows him through a life in which the presidency was just one of many accomplishments. As designer of Monticello and other renowned buildings, he was one of the great architects of his era; as founder of the University of Virginia, he was one of the nation's early champions of higher education. His greatest legacy is perhaps as author of the Declaration of Independence, a nearly unrivaled instance of words giving tangible meaning to life. The Jefferson revealed here is distinguished by his often contradictory nature but also by his optimism, his curiosity, his exceptional sense of history (including the history still to be made). While primarily aimed at young adult readers, the book is a substantial work of scholarship, based on many years' research of primary-source materials (including black oral history) and the most current writings, and like Bober's earlier works, should attract students of history of all ages. This book faces the fact that Jefferson was a flawed human being - yet insists that this does not disqualify him as a hero.…

Paperback. Condizione: Good. The newest English translation of one of Haiti?s most powerful literary voices DÉsirÉe Congo is a riveting, powerful, and profoundly original novel set in the final years of the Haitian Revolution at the dawn of the nineteenth century. In this richly textured work, Trouillot?one of the leading voices of the francophone literary world?constructs an intricate narrative web from the varied experiences of freedmen and women, maroons, enslaved African people and their Creole children, as well as French planters and white smallholders in colonial Saint-Domingue at a historical moment of unthinkable upheaval. It is a moving, lyrical book whose strikingly realized characters enrich our understanding of the last confrontations between the Haitian revolutionaries and Napoleon?s imperial forces?a conflict that resulted in the success of the largest slave revolt in recorded history and the independence of the first Black state in the western hemisphere. …

Paperback. Condizione: Good. Excerpt: .works and spoke of having already receaved a good proofe thereof by iron sent from there. This might have been small comfort for the 4,000 which had been spent already. In May, 1621, realizing that a replacement for Bluett was needed, the Company entered into an agreement with John Berkeley, sometimes of Beverstone Castle in the County of Glocester (a gentleman of honourable familie), as Master & over-seer of the works at the site called The falling Creeke. He agreed to take himself, his son Maurice, three servants from his private family and twenty workmen. These would include eight for the furnace (two founders, two keepers, two filers and two carpenters) and twelve others (four finers, two servants, two chaffery men, two hammer men and two servants). He would get 30 toward furnishing his personal group, plus their transportation, and 20 to cover the assembly of the workmen. The twenty workmen, to be bound for seven years of service to the Company, would be transported and victualled as other tenantes for one whole yeare at the Companies charge. Letters were dispatched to the Colony urging special care and Pg 59 attention for this new company made up of Berkeley and his ging. Berkeley evidently felt that the Falling Creek site was ideal for wood, water, mines and stone. His letters indicated that he expected to be producing good quantities of iron by the late spring of 1622. He envisioned much more for the now 5,000 investment than the disparagingly reported return of a fire shovell and tonges and a little barre of iron made by a bloomery. He, however, did not expect the massacre. The Indians swept down on the ironworks community and left twenty-seven dead as well as considerable destruction to the works. The dead included John Berkeley, a mason, two wives, three children and Joseph Fitch Apothecary to Doctor Pots. This was the end of the project although the Company demonstrated, for a time, its intention to.…
