Product Description: The first battle simulation system was designed to exercise American divisional commanders and staffs in the control and coordination of combined arms operations. The game was played using 1:50000 maps using simple counters. Movement and firing were measured using the 1 km grid squares that were already printed on the maps. The system was an open ended flexible training tool that could be applied to any scenario, level of control, or mode of play. It could be played with all the players using one central map or it could be the basis for a large headquarters based wargame. The rules include: Maneuver Long range fire Close combat Artillery Plus optional rules on the use of smoke, flanking shots, unit reconstruction and reconnaissance. There are also some sample ORBATS for American and Russian units. The discussion of the reasoning behind the game system and guidance for umpires is still relevant of modern wargaming. The first battle rules are well written, with examples; so it is quite feasible for a dedicated hobby wargamer to recreate a game from the Cold War using these rules. All one needs is a standard 1:50000 or 1:25000 map, some counters, two ORBATS and a simple scenario. Playing a game using these rules is harking back to the days when two huge armies were facing each other across a divided Germany. …

However, there is a subset of wargames that are used to explore the darkest elements of conflict. These games are routinely run behind closed doors and rarely, if ever, does the existence of such games reach the public domain, let alone the details. Sometimes these games are part of professional military activity, sometimes part of academic research. Both purposes use the vehicle of designing and playing a wargame as a way to generate different insights from merely reading and attending conferences. The games in this book were carefully chosen to reduce the risk of offence. They demonstrate the ways of running such games, but without using current or recent conflicts as examples. They include: Bosnian Mercenary: Gaming the Chaos of the Disintegration of Yugoslavia WMD 1945 My Auntâs War: Civilian Experience of War Between a Rock and a Hard Place: Gaming Surrender Pickettâs Charge: Using Drama The Button: Nuclear Decision Making Exercise Hard Rock: Civil Defence The Tank Factory: Military Management of the Economy During Wartime The reader should be clear that these games on dark subjects matter and often have real world consequences. This book is the first to shed some light on these types of games with actual examples. …

From service in the Crimean War, where he was wounded , to the Indian Mutiny, and then through a whole array of other assignments, MacDonald saw more service than most. From the extensive contemporary accounts of the Regiment and histories of the Army, Donald Featherstone has reconstructed the life of a Highlander in the mid-nineteenth century. Using the archives of the Black Watch Regimental Museum and his unique access to key British military historians, Featherstone has found a wealth of period detail. Hector MacDonald was a real soldier and the actions in this book are real, his story is in many ways representative of the Victorian soldier who founded an empire by feat of arms.…

They were extensively used by the Canadian Military as their official army wargaming rules to help train soldiers for war. Phil Barker, of WRG fame, gave his agreement for them to use many of his ideas in the production of these rules. The game was played on a 1:300 scale models on a standard wargaming table. Each vehicle is represented by one model, each infantry section by one base. Each move representing just 2 minutes of real time. It was designed to illustrate small unit tactics in a simulated battle. Players represent the troop leaders, platoon commanders or Forward Observation Officers (FOO). The game is best played with all the players on one side and a semi-programmed Soviet opponent should be run by the umpire according to the detailed notes on WARSAW Pact tactics.…

Product Description: Note: These were previously published as the Victorian Army's Kriegspiel Rules and the War Office 1896 Rules for the Conduct of the Wargame. There were two books that were very influential in the start of British military wargaming in the 19th Century, J.R. MacDowell' book in 1886 was the second of them. This book includes his translation of the classic German Kriegsspiel text, the Prussian General J. von Verdy du Vernois 'Beitrag Zum Kriegsspeil'. This challenged the ever growing complexity of the original Kriegsspiel rules by suggesting that no rules were necessary. This idea later became known as 'Free Kriegsspiel' and as such was the basis of the development of the strategic wargames used from 1900 onwards. This book includes the classic translation of the 1896 Prussian 'Free Kriegspiel', describes why and how to run the war game with a minimum of rules: ⢠A historical introduction ⢠Guidance on how to play a Kriegspiel ⢠The Victorian Army's 1896 Kriegspiel Rules ⢠Appendices on: ⢠Rates of advance ⢠Daily march rates ⢠Identification distances ⢠military use of railways ⢠Battle planning times 1940- present day.…

Product Description: As part of the History of Wargaming Projectâs continuing wargaming âarchaeologyâ, agreement was given to publish this set of rules as an example of the US Naval War Collegeâs use of wargaming as part of their curriculum in 1969. What is interesting about this set of rules is they are complete and they have a sample scenario which helps illuminate the thinking of the wargame designers. There are straightforward rules for surface-to-air missiles (SAMs), gunnery, air, torpedoes and mines etc. The use of these rules is clearly illustrated in the sample game. The rules were clearly written for others to play the game, even in the absence of the game designers. The sample game gives the background and briefings and the two sides ORBATs. Then it sets out the plans of the two sides. It goes on to set out how the game is setup, managed and played. The rules are supported by numerous examples of the forms used to manage the game, such damage assessment flowcharts and surface to air missile assessment flowcharts. There is sufficient information for the modern wargamer to understand how the game was conducted or to recreate the games for themselves. The book is published by the History of Wargaming Project. It is part of a series to document key steps in the development of wargaming.…

Every setback and victory, every act of courage and cowardice was recorded and illustrated in the popular press. Nowhere was this more true than in Africa, where small wars came in three distinct types: campaigns of conquest or annexation, such as the 1879 campaign against Cetshwayo's Zulu Impis; campaigns for the suppression of an insurrection, such as those in East and West Africa, where many campaigns began as simple expeditions and ended by bringing vast territories under British rule; and campaigns to avenge an insult, designed to impose control without annexing territory, the Abyssinian Expedition of 1868 being a typical example. Only the Boer Wars of 1881 and 1897-1902 did not fit into one of these three patterns. Fought against an enemy armed with comparable weapons, the campaign of 1881 was the only war lost by British troops during the Victorian period. Donald Featherstone, an acknowledged expert on colonial warfare, has written a vivid and accurate account of the small wars in Africa, drawing heavily on the letters and first-hand reports of those who were there. His Victoria's Enemies was described by the Journal of the Royal Artillery as 'wide ranging . well researched and excellent value .' This book is published as part of the work of The History of Wargaming Project to document key works of Donald Featherstone.…

Product Description: George Gushâs Wargames Rules for Fifteenth to Seventeenth Centuries (1420-1700) were developed from the early WRG Ancients rules. They used a figures scale of 1 to 20 and a ground scale of 1 inch to 20 paces. They were written to recreate the great battles and sieges of this era. The rules are complex by todayâs standards and players require good tactical sense, rather than good dice rolls, to overcome their opponent. They include rules for orders and generals, with the importance of issuing the right orders at the start of the game being emphasised. Melees/ shooting are dealt with in detail, with the armour, weapons, training, morale and tactical factors all being taken into account. A key part of the game is the reaction test; where a playerâs units may have their orders changed. The section of sieges is especially detailed. The rules are still popular (as of 2016) and many wargamers maintain these are still the best rules for renaissance wargaming.…

Written by Sir Francis Chichester, the games reflected his vast experience at the exacting art of pinpoint navigation. This book was first published in 1942 at the heart of World War II. Bomber Command was flying regularly to hit targets on the content, but the navigators in the individual bombers were struggling to find the targets. Using his experience of long-distance flying, Chichester created three games to help the navigators improve their skills prior to operations. Game 1 was a game of chance, game 2 involved finding the correct longitude and latitude, but game 3 required the player to correctly locate themselves on the map. Reading the paragraphs that describe the situation, then studying the map for clues offers insight into the difficulties faced during the early stages of the bombing campaign, before electronic navigation aids became widespread.…

A structured analysis of all aspects of Civil War combat, making a surprisingly technical and detailed coverage compressed into such a short space (This doubtless explains why it has been used as a set text by several universities). Sub-sections cover the army commander's perspectives in first setting up and then running a battle: the arts of generalship at the level of Corps and Division command; and then a long section on the regiment's battle, including minor tactics, weapons, combat psychology - and the casualties. Product Description: This is one of the classic works on historical analysis of combat by David Roland as part of his work in the Ministry of defense. It was widely recognized for its pioneering research on combat. The book starts by summarizing development of UK MoD historical analysis from studies in the 1970s. The development in the 1970s, of pulsed laser weapon simulators enabled real-time force-on-force exercises to be conducted and monitored. Analysis of these exercises, allowed advice to be given on more realistic combat modelling, and in particular human behavior and reactions, underpinning operational effectiveness, force structures and equipment procurement studies. Using quantitative Historical Analysis (HA), it was possible to extend to comparisons between the levels of effectiveness between simulated and real combat and to establish basic combat degradation estimates, one weapon class at a time. The effects of suppression, surprise and shock, were also quantified. The result of this research shed new light on infantry combat, armor v anti-tank weapons and heroism on the battlefield. The large number of diagrams make the analysis clear and although the book is based around statistics, no in-depth math is needed to understanding the conclusions. The book has been published by the History of Wargaming Project as part of ongoing efforts to document the development of professional wargaming.…

As a result of those wargames, battles were fought, campaigns were launched; lives were lost, lives were saved. An overview of such games has been covered in the literature before. This book is different as it aims to examine the detail of these wargames by including primary material; extracts from source documents, wargaming rules and umpiring guides from the pre-war period until 1945. Included are detailed guidelines on the German use of wargaming during the war based on post war analysis by the American military. This includes outlines of best practice and the value of these games. Samples of the German map based tactical exercises set at platoon and company level. An example of a British attack on a village. British and American umpire manuals with rules for arbitrating field exercises, sand table and map wargames. A Royal Navy carrier wargame: Find Fix and Strike (1944). The RAF and the USAAF dropped 1.6 billion tons of bombs on Germany between 1939 and 1945. The impact on the German war machine was huge, but so was the cost. Over 55,500 Bomber Command crew lost their lives during this campaign. Each morning the weather and moon state were suitable, target(s) were selected by Bomber Command. Often the orders included the phrase âMaximum Effortâ that meant all bombers that had crews were to be part of the attack. A complex series of steps were then initiated to ensure the bombers were in the air, over the target at the appointed hour to deliver their bombs in the shortest possible time. Concentration of the bomber stream was designed to overwhelm the enemy defences. The game allows the player to assemble their crew, select their target and go through the various stages of the mission. From take-off, over the enemy coast, through the flak zones and onto the target. Key to returning home was avoiding the enemy night-fighters. The rules are embedded in historical research and include briefings, aide-memoires, maps and period material. Playing the game aims to help the player(s) understand the experience of the crews of Bomber Command a little better. This book is published by the History of Wargaming Project as an example of experiential learning in the form of a hobby wargame.…

Wargamers can create simulations of the simplest encounter or the grandest strategy. Armored warfare in miniature has a special appeal. The model tank wargamer can take advantage of the superb range of miniature model tanks available and the many books detailing modern weaponry to recreate this style of fighting that was born on the Somme in 1916 and came of age in 1940. Perfect scale models and accurate rules combine to produce an almost faultless simulation of tank warfare - all that is missing is the clatter of tracks, the roar of engines and the crump of shell fire. This book lays the complete groundwork on the subject. It explains how to use the many different armored fighting vehicles, their guns, caliber, missile weight, range, angle of impact, thickness of armor; and does the same for anti-tank weapons. It provides essential information on communications, mines, infantry co-operation, aircraft and armored operations, and battlefields; it also provides practical information on how to assemble armored forces in miniature and table-top terrains over which they can battle. The authors are well known veteran wargamers. Donald Featherstone served with the Royal Tank Regiment in North Africa and Italy during World War II; his associate, Keith Robinson, is an adviser to one of the main manufacturers of model fighting vehicles for wargamers. Together they have clearly and simply brought this modern style of warfare to the table-top battlefield and provide technical and tactical advice against a fascinating background of wargaming narrative with ten historical scenarios spanning the lifetime of the tank, from an armored car action in 1914 to the Middle East conflicts of recent history. …

However, there are severe limits to our current understanding of the conduct of military campaigns culminating in sieges and pitch battles during the medieval era. This book is an attempt to develop further understanding of some aspects of the medieval military reality, in particular around the operational and tactical scale. It looks at the medieval operation art of war such as the numbers involved, scouting, logistics, march rates and the length of the campaign season. Then it looks at the medieval battle; how armies deployed, advanced, fought, won and lost. The many topics include dressing the ranks, the advance to contact, battle cries and pre-battle speeches. The third section explores sieges and street fighting. Such as the lengths of sieges, success rates, and the practical details involved in storming a castle. The fourth section of the book includes five sets of rules to allow the reader to create interactive models of medieval warfare on the tabletop for them to explore. From pitch battles, to skirmishes, raids and retreats, the games allow the reader to create interactive models of medieval warfare on the tabletop for them to explore. This book is written from the perspective that there was a medieval art of war. War took time, effort, planning, logistics and skill to initiate, conduct and win. We assume that the medieval warrior largely knew what they were doing and if we do not comprehend the decisions they took when waging war, this reflects our lack of understanding, not theirs. This book aims to fill some of the gaps in our mental models of the medieval warfare. Game #1: Middle Aged Spread - Battle level rules 1066-1485 Game #2: Sword and Spear: Wargaming Low-Level Battle Tactics Game #3: Once More unto the Breach: Skirmish Rules Game #4: Gaming Retreats: Cymerau (1257) Game #5: Gaming Cattle Raids: The Night Belongs to Paddy The book is published by the History of Wargaming Project as part of ongoing work to document the development of wargaming.…

It was the largest example of a littoral campaign since WWII. It included the classical phases from command of the sea and amphibious landing to battalion level land battles, with fire support including naval gunfire support. In many ways the War was the first modern digital war; with each side running the battle through the use of radio and in the air/ sea through the use of radar. This book is the first of a new series, each volume explores a particular area of warfare through the use of wargames. Each game has been crafted to examine different aspects of the conflict. Playing these games, along with reading the supporting designerâs notes, aims to help the reader actively develop their understanding through experiential learning. The goal is to help them develop a deeper understanding than from just reading primary and secondary sources about the war. Reading memoirs and commentary is essential, but so is making command decisions, such as looking at the conceptual map of the Falkland Islands and pondering how close to move the British aircraft carriers to the land action. It is in this space that wargaming rules supreme in the taxonomy of interactive learning techniques. This book contains four games: Game #1: Matrix Game- where it is possible for the wider conflict to be resolved without a land battle on East Falklands. Game #2: The Falklands War: Task Force Commander- looks at the decisions made by the Royal Navy to support the amphibious landings and subsequent advance to Stanley. It is essentially a game about naval risk management. Game #3: Battalion Commander- explores the land battle; often decisions in the planning stage set out the path to subsequent success or failure. This includes a sample scenario the Battle for Goose Green Game #4: The Falklands II (1984)- was a professional wargame designed Paddy Griffith about a potential second Argentine invasion several years after the Falklands War. It includes a detailed model of Cold War air combat. The game demonstrated that a second Argentine invasion would initially be successful. The book is published by the History of Wargaming Project as part of ongoing work to document the development of wargaming.…
