Paperback. Condizione: new. Paperback. In 1909 a rich accumulation of many thousands of bones was excavated from Mammoth Cave in Australia's south-west. Many of the bones far exceeded in size any modern-day native mammal, evidence that in prehistoric times giant mammals had roamed the Australian bush. They included a marsupial the size of a buffalo, kangaroos more than two metres tall, wallabies much bigger than any living species, a marsupial 'lion' about the size of a leopard, giant echidnas and wombats, plus the thylacine (Tasmanian tiger). What did these animals look like and how did they live? And how did they become extinct in a relatively short period of time? Hardcover. Condizione: new. Hardcover. Leo's remains were discovered in a remote cave on the Nullarbor Plain. He was a marsupial lion, Thylacoleo, one of Australia's most extraordinary megafauna (extinct giant animals), thought to have lived approximately 500,000 years ago. This fascinating book recreates Leo's life in the period leading up to his early and tragic death. The story also recounts the process by which Leo became a fossil, and then his eventual 'discovery' by contemporary museum scientists. The book also provides an insight into the work of palaeontologists in researching, recovering and investigating fossil remains. Leo's remains were discovered in a remote cave on the Nullarbor Plain. Paperback. Condizione: new. Paperback. The raw, alluring beauty of the pearl and the stories of those who collected it form a fascinating part of Australia's national heritage. The Aboriginal trade and cultural significance of the magnificent Pinctada pearl shell had been well established before the arrival of ambitious European and Asian fortune seekers to the northern reaches of the country. Pearling quickly became a ruthless and illustrious industry spanning from Shark Bay to the Torres Strait Islands.A culture of support and exchange both on the water and in the pearl sheds contributed to a unique human enrichment. Diverse social communities developed as many laboured and lost their lives at sea in search of the elusive treasure. From objects of ancient trade to beautiful pearl jewellery, Lustre traces the gritty human story of pearling across the north of Australia. This visually stunning book weaves together strands of Aboriginal, Asian, and European histories, revealing the stories of the people who, for generations, have collected and harvested these treasures from Saltwater Country. Aggiungi al carrelloGodard, Philippe, 1937- / Kerros, Tugdual de. 1772: the French annexation of New Holland : the tale of Louis de Saint Aloüarn. Translated by Odette Margot, Myra Stanbury and Sue Baxter. Welshpool, W.A.: Western Australian Museum, 2008, 269pp., PAPERBACK, very good, slightly creaky. The French-English rivalry in the 18th century set the backdrop for exploration in the Indian and Pacific Oceans. The French Government decided to support an expedition that would solve the mystery of Terres Australes, restore the prestige of its navy and equal Lieutenant James Cook's achievements. By 1770, James Cook had only proved that the 'Great South Land' would not be found in the fairly low latitudes of the Pacific. In 1771, two young, ambitious, French naval officers and Breton nobles, Yves-Joseph de Kerguelen and his second-in-command Louis de Saint Aloiiam, were given permission by the King of France, Louis XV, to undertake a voyage to discover and claim in the name of France, Terres Australes. The expedition sailed from the Ile de France into the southernmost oceans in search of discovery, fame and glory. The extreme conditions, navigational problems, stormy seas and biting cold made the journey into a disaster and the ships were separated. Louis de Saint Aloiiam continued with his orders and sailed to the coastline of Hew Holland. On 30 March, 1772, the annexation of New Holland by France took place, on the northernmost cliff of Dirk Hartog Island, overlooking Turtle Bay, off the coast of present day Western Australia. 1772: The French Annexation ofNew Holland is a story of this epic voyage ; a retelling of a chapter of Australian history whose significance has failed to attract the recognition it deserves.
