The "great controversy," essentially started by Frederick Whittaker with his book "A Complete Life of Gen. George A. Custer" (#2540), was over the degree to which Custer and Major Reno and their actions were to blame for the 7th's defeat. The great debate centered around whether or not Custer disobeyed Gen. Terry's orders. Utley explores the literary responses to the battle as well as the origin, growth and evolution of the Custer legend. A classic and excellent.

The author was teenager when he joined the Army in May 1950 who after basic training at Ft. Riley, he was sent to Japan and in November 1950 fought a war of retreat through the Chosin Reservoir of North Korea being one of the few survivors. The author grew up fast and soon held positions of leadership in his three tours of Korea. This is a firsthand account of the activities that Company D encountered and experienced at the Chosin Reservoir Battle by the author and his comrades in arms. A clean very presentable copy in a Brodart mylar jacket. Signed by Author(s).

The book has been opened a little too wide at the title page, otherwise it is is clean and firmly bound, corners sharp, spine straight, no markings. The jacket has a trace of rubbing to the edge…s, but no chips, tears or creases, crisp and bright. Now in a DJ protector. The author was a member of the famed Negro Tenth Cavalry. This account of his experiences comes from Bigelow's daily journal and appeared in serial form in 'Outing Magazine,' from April to July 1886. The publisher states that this is the first and only published book version. "With the original illustrations of Hooper, McDougall, Chapin, Hatfield and Frederic Remington." Utley provides a brief description of the Indian situation that evolved before the LBH and then he provides an abbreviated but well described sequence of battle events. Utley then describes the press' role in developing the story that caught General Sherman…and Sheridan off guard as Sherman provides Terry's second controversial report to a reporter by accident. Utley describes the fireworks that arises between Custer supporters such as his old classmate Confederate Rosser and Reno and other military men such as Colonel Hughes, Terry's adjutant and relative. The controversy is even made even more complex by the chapter spent on the Indian's version of events that has elements of truth combined with confusing facts or half truths perhaps aggravated by poor translations and the Indians unique individualistic versions of battle that lack time and spatial realities.
