DETAILS: very good large heavy red half-cloth with decorated boards, covers somewhat scuffed and worn, corners dented and rubbed, sewn binding and paper strong and well-preserved. LATOUR, BRUNO, ed. . Reset modernity. Edited by Bruno Latour ; with Christophe Leclercq. Karlsruhe, Germany / Cambridge, MA: ZKM, Center for Art and Media / MIT Press, 2016, 560pp., . Zentrum für Kunst und Medientechnologie Karlsruhe - "Modernity has had so many meanings and tries to combine so many contradictory sets of attitudes and values that it has become impossible to use it to define the future. It has ended up crashing like an overloaded computer. Hence the idea is that modernity might need a sort of reset. Not a clean break, not a "tabula rasa," not another iconoclastic gesture, but rather a restart of the complicated programs that have been accumulated, over the course of history, in what is often called the "modernist project." This operation has become all the more urgent now that the ecological mutation is forcing us to reorient ourselves toward an experience of the material world for which we don't seem to have good recording devices. Reset Modernity! is organized around six procedures that might induce the readers to reset some of those instruments. Once this reset has been completed, readers might be better prepared for a series of new encounters with other cultures. After having been thrown into the modernist maelstrom, those cultures have difficulties that are just as grave as ours in orienting themselves within the notion of modernity. It is not impossible that the course of those encounters might be altered after modernizers have reset their own way of recording their experience of the world. At the intersection of art, philosophy, and anthropology, Reset Modernity! has assembled close to sixty authors, most of whom have participated, in one way or another, in the Inquiry into Modes of Existence initiated by Bruno Latour. Together they try to see whether such a reset and such encounters have any practicality. Much like the two exhibitions Iconoclash and Making Things Public, this book documents and completes what could be called a "thought exhibition:" Reset Modernity! held at ZKM, Center for Art and Media Karlsruhe from April to August 2016. Like the two others, this book, generously illustrated, includes contributions, excerpts, and works from many authors and artists.". ISBN 9780262034593.…

Soft cover. Condizione: Very Good. No Jacket. BUFFALO HEADS: MEDIA STUDY, MEDIA PRACTICE, MEDIA PIONEERS, 1973-1990, edited by Woody Vasulka and Peter Weibel, softcover, illustrated, probable first edition, 2008. BOOK CONDITION: very good. The text block and illustrations are in fine condition, with no tears, dog ears, or marks. No bookplate or signature of a prior owner. Not a library book or remainder. The wraps are in good condition (wrinkles, creases, curling corners, one light crease on spine). 11 x 8 ½, 839 pages, 124 ounces. XX [From the back cover] In the 1970s and the 1990s, the Department of Media Study at the State University of New York at Buffalo developed into what was perhaps the most influential school for media arts in the 20th century. Teaching there under the leadership of founder Gerald O'Grady were the (since canonized) structuralist, avant-garde filmmakers Hollis Frampton, Tony Conrad, and Paul Sharits, documentary filmmaker James Blue, video artists Steina and Woody Vasulka, and media artist Peter Weibel. XX [MIT Press description] Twentieth-century art history is not just a history of individuals, but of collectives, groups. Universities and colleges have had much to do with this through their support of artistic communities and creative interactions. In the 1920s and 1930s, the Bauhaus was known for this. In the 1940s, Black Mountain College became a leader in community-based visual art practice and education. And in the 1970s and 1980s, the Department of Media Study at the State University of New York at Buffalo was the place to be. It was there, in 1973, well before any other university had a program explicitly devoted to media art, that Gerald O'Grady founded a media study program that is now legendary. Artists investigated, taught, and made media art in all forms, and founded the first Digital Arts Laboratory. These Buffalo faculty members were not just practicing artists, but also theorists who wrote and spoke on issues raised by their work. They set the terms for the development of media art and paved the way for the triumph of video installation art in the 1990s. The images and texts in Buffalo Heads bear witness to the groundbreaking events at the Buffalo Center for Media Study. The book presents not just a tribute to a famous media department finally receiving its due; it is a rich inventory of primary texts (many never before published), works that will improve our understanding of media, amplify our cultural memory, and offer a perspective on contemporary issues. Woody Vasulka was a Professor at the Center for Media Study at SUNY Buffalo from 1973 to 1979. With his wife Steina, he founded The Kitchen, a New York City electronic media theater in 1971. Peter Weibel is Chairman and CEO of the ZKM | Center for Art and Media Karlsruhe, Germany.…

Paperback. First edition, 2001. Fine paperback with French flaps; appears to be new with only a hint of shelf wear and some wrinkles to the spine due to the binding process. BOOKS SHIP THE NEXT BUSINESS DAY, WRAPPED IN PADDING, IN A BOX. A catalogue published in conjunction with an exhibition of work by Olafur Eliasson, held at the Neue Galerie, Graz, March 30 - May 21, 2000 and at the ZKM/Center for Art and Media, Karlsruhe, May 31 - August 26, 2001. "The projects and preoccupations of the Icelandic artist Olafur Eliasson inspired this unique collaborative enterprise by artist, curator, scientists, and art critics. Distinguished by a poetic economy of means and a quiet, elegant beauty, his work combines the ephemeral natural effects of light, water, and wind with more tangible materials such as wood, moss, and grass. In the book Eliasson's works serve as the thematic prism for a wide range of essays exploring the intersection of science and art. The contributors range from chemists, geologists, and physicists to architects and cultural theorists. Among others, they include Per Bak, Aaron Betsky, Daniel Birnbaum, Jonathan Crary, Gyorgy Darvas, William Day, Manuel de Landa, Diller + Scofidio, Norman Foster, Peter Galison, Manuel Gausa, Brian Greene, Elizabeth Grosz, Marianne Krogh Jensen, Rem Koolhas, Henri Lefebvre, Gunter Leising, Bruce Mau, Hans Ulrich Obrist, Robert Osserman, John Rajchman, Jaime Salazar, Erik Scheldon, Richard Sennett, Kurt Schilcher, Michael Speaks, Ben van Berkel, Anthony Vidler, Hans C. von Baeyer, Peter Weibel, and Manfred Wolff-Plottegg." Edited by Peter Weibel. 720 pages; profusely illustrated with color plates and b&w text illustrations; 6.25 x 8.25 inches. Exhibition checklist, chronology, contributors' biographies. Soft cover. Condizione: Good. Exhibition monograph, well illustrated. Rubbed at the extremities, many little dents and scratches on the covers, dime-sized dent in the center spine exposing layers of paper, glue and webbing to varying degrees- an impressive dent likely caused, I surmise, by some gravity-inducing event. The binding remains firm and square, the text clean. Extra shipping required for priority orders and exotic destinations.…
