Ex-library with the usual library markings (if not for the library markings this copy would be graded in fine condition); overall a nice used copy! Black boards with gilt lettering on the spine. 424 historical and informative pages nicely enhanced by black and white photographs and illustrations! "A biography of composer Jacques Offenbach that is also a social and cultural history of Second Empire Paris.Siegfried Kracauer's biography of the composer Jacques Offenbach is a remarkable work of social and cultural history. First published in German in 1937 and in English translation in 1938, the book uses the life and work of Offenbach as a focal point for a broad and penetrating portrayal of Second Empire Paris. Offenbach's immensely popular operettas have long been seen as part of the larger historical amnesia and escapism that pervaded Paris in the aftermath of 1848. But Kracauer insists that Offenbach's productions must be understood as more than glittering distractions. The fantasy realms of such operettas as La Belle Hélène were as one with the unreality of Napoleon III's imperial masquerade, but they also made a mockery of the pomp and pretense surrounding the apparatuses of power. At the same time, Offenbach's dreamworlds were embedded with a layer of utopian content that can be seen as an indictment of the fraudulence and corruption of the times. This edition includes Kracauer's preface to the original German edition as well as a critical foreword by Gertrud Koch.".

Condizione: Very Good. Hardcover in a bright, unclipped dust jacket. An examination of the ultimate power opera grants to singing: the reversal of death. In Operatic Afterlives, Michal Grover-Friedlander examines the implications of opera's founding myth-the story of Orpheus and Eurydice: Orpheus's attempt to revive the dead Eurydice with the power of singing. Grover-Friedlander examines instances in which opera portrays an existence beyond death, a revival of the dead, or a simultaneous presence of life and death. These portrayals-in operas by Puccini and other composers and performances by Maria Callas-are made possible, she argues, by the unique treatment of voice in the operas in question: the occurrence of a breach in which singing itself takes on an afterlife in the face of the singer's death. Clean copy, 252 pages. Record # 378833.

As the iconography of the Deposition grew in importance over the course of the fifteenth century, picturing the Deposition of Christ~ the imago Dei, "the image of the invisible God" (Colossians 1:15) ~ became an occasion to imagine the deposition of the image as such. By exploiting the auto~iconoclastic implications of the deposition scene, artists gave measured form to late medieval iconophobia. In so doing, they prefigured the imminent iconoclasms of the Protestant Reformation. Wanting to put an end to the Catholic cult of images, Protestant reformers would find themselves performing a well~rehearsed gesture: the deposition of what they liked to call dead images. The late medieval Deposition's prefiguration of Reformation iconoclasm prefigures, in turn, the repeated "deaths" of art since the invention of the camera. This is the premise of the vignettes devoted to twentieth~century works of art that conclude each chapter of this book.

Paperback. Condizione: new. Paperback. An investigation of how the idea of a public as a central fiction of modern life informs our literature, politics, and culture. Most of the people around us belong to our world not directly, as kin or comrades, but as strangers. How do we recognize them as members of our world? We are related to them as transient participants in common publics. Indeed, most of us would find it nearly impossible to imagine a social world without publics. In the eight essays in this book, Michael Warner addresses the question: What is a public? According to Warner, the idea of a public is one of the central fictions of modern life. Publics have powerful implications for how our social world takes shape, and much of modern life involves struggles over the nature of publics and their interrelations. The idea of a public contains ambiguities, even contradictions. As it is extended to new contexts, politics, and media, its meaning changes in ways that can be difficult to uncover. Combining historical analysis, theoretical reflection, and extensive case studies, Warner shows how the idea of a public can reframe our understanding of contemporary literary works and politics and of our social world in general. In particular, he applies the idea of a public to the junction of two intellectual traditions: public-sphere theory and queer theory. Hardcover. Condizione: Used - Like New. In The Wicked Queen, Chantal Thomas presents the history of themythification of one of the most infamous queens in all history, whose executionstill fascinates us today. Almost as soon as Marie-Antoinette, archduchess ofAustria, was brought to France as the bride of Louis XVI in 1771, she was smotheredin images. In a monarchy increasingly under assault, the charm and horror of herfeminine body and her political power as a foreign intruder turned Marie-Antoinetteinto an alien other. Marie-Antoinette's mythification, argues Thomas, must beinterpreted as the misogynist demonization of women's power and authority inrevolutionary France. In a series of pamphlets written from the 1770s until her deathin 1793, Marie-Antoinette is portrayed as a spendthrift, a libertine, an orgiasticlesbian, and a poisoner and infant murderess. In her analyses of these pamphlets, seven of which appear here in translation for the first time, Thomas reconstructshow the mounting hallucinatory and libelous discourse culminated in the inevitabledestruction of what had become the counterrevolutionary symbol par excellence. TheWicked Queen exposes the elaborate process by which the myth of Marie-Antoinetteemerged as a crucial element in the successful staging of the FrenchRevolution. "In this groundbreaking collection of essays, historians and literary theorists examine how, between 1500 and 1800, pornography emerged as a literary practice and a category of knowledge intimately linked to the formative moments of Western modernity and the democratization of culture. The first modern writers and engravers of pornography were part of the demimonde of heretics, freethinkers and libertines who constituted the dark underside of the Renaissance, the Scientific Revolution, the Enlightenment and the French Revolution. From the start, early modern European pornography used the shock of sex to test the boundaries and regulation of obscene behavior and expression in the public and private sphere. As such, pornography criticized and even subverted political authorities as well as social and sexual relations." -- publisher''s statement Fine. Covers and contents clean and unmarked.
