As the iconography of the Deposition grew in importance over the course of the fifteenth century, picturing the Deposition of Christ~ the imago Dei, "the image of the invisible God" (Colossians 1:15) ~ became an occasion to imagine the deposition of the image as such. By exploiting the auto~iconoclastic implications of the deposition scene, artists gave measured form to late medieval iconophobia. In so doing, they prefigured the imminent iconoclasms of the Protestant Reformation.
