As the iconography of the Deposition grew in importance over the course of the fifteenth century, picturing the Deposition of Christ~ the imago Dei, "the image of the invisible God" (Colossians 1:15) ~ became an occasion to imagine the deposition of the image as such. By exploiting the auto~iconoclastic implications of the deposition scene, artists gave measured form to late medieval iconophobia. In so doing, they prefigured the imminent iconoclasms of the Protestant Reformation. Wanting to put an end to the Catholic cult of images, Protestant reformers would find themselves performing a well~rehearsed gesture: the deposition of what they liked to call dead images.
