Die Illustrationen sind reduziert, präzise und zugleich aggressiv in ihrer Verdichtung: Je höher die Zahl, desto weniger beherrschbar wird die Situation. Die 1968 in London bei Collins erschienene Ausgabe zeigt Sendaks konsequente Haltung gegenüber Kinderliteratur: Kinder werden nicht beruhigt, sondern ernst genommen.
