In its earthiness & psychological acuity, it speaks across the centuries & w/ this new, "fluid, readable, & accurate rendition" (Library Journal) Allen Mandelbaum has wrought the "Metamorphoses" for our age. The "Metamorphoses" is a treasury of classical myths filtered through the sharply irreverent sensibility of the Roman poet Ovid (43 B.C. - A.D. 17), who weaves together every major mythological story to display a dazzling array of miraculous metamorphoses, from the time chaos is transformed into order at the moment of creation, to the time when the soul of Julius Caesar is turned into a star & set in the heavens. Through Allen Mandelbaum's poetic artistry, this glorious achievement of classical literature, whose influence on English literature is rivaled only perhaps by that of the Bible, is revealed anew. The 'Bloomsbury Review' declared, "Mandelbaum's Ovid, like his Dante, is unlikely to be equaled for years to come." * HIGHEST PRAISE: "Reading Mandelbaum's extraordinary translation, one imagines Ovid in his darkest moods w/ the heart of Baudelaire . One critic has called its teasing quality nothing short of "Nabokovian". In its earthiness, its psychological acuity, it speaks over centuries to our time. And w/ this new translation by Allen Mandelbaum, the "Metamorphosis" for our age has been created. The "Metamorphosis" is a treasury of classical myths, filtered through the worldly & far from reverent sensibility of the Roman poet Ovid (43 B.C. - A.D. 17). It weaves together every major mythological story to display a dazzling array of miraculous metamorphoses, from the time chaos is transformed into order at the moment of creation to the time when the soul of Julius Caesar is turned into a star & set in the heavens. The vain youth, Narcissus, transformed into a flower & damned to pine away at his own reflection . . . the terrified Daphne, transformed through her own prayers into a quivering laurel tree to escape the advances & enchantments of Apollo . . . the son of Hermes & Aphrodite, merged for eternity with a nymph into "one body with a single face & form" & thus transformed into Hermaphroditus. Through the poetic artistry of Allen Mandlebaum, this gloriously entertaining achievement of classical literature, whose influence on English literature is rivaled perhaps only by that of the Bible, is revealed anew. * ABOUT THE TRANSLATOR: ALLEN MANDELBAUM is the author of 5 verse volumes.
