Soft cover. Condizione: Good. No Jacket. First published as part of the trilogy entitled Xhosa in Town, this book concerns the second generation of urban Africans in the South African seaport of East London. The investigation shows how the acceptance of Western patterns started among preceding generations in rural areas and how…the process of Westernization was furthered by definitive settlement in town. In certain situations, however, traditional values and patterns of behaviour assert themselves and appear to meet the emotional needs arising from uncertainty and insecurity. These themes are illustrated by examining the conditions that caused the first generation to settle in town, by isolating distinct cultural types among the second generation, and by analysing family rituals and ceremonies, premarital relations and marriage, household and family structure, and the social universe of second-generation town-dwellers. An interesting feature revealed by this study is the matrifocal trend emerging in many urban households. For this second edition the original research has been followed up by new fieldwork, the results of which are presented in an additional chapter which brings the record up to the end of 1972 and offers further theoretical discussion.
