Softcover. Condizione: Good. Immediate dispatch from Somerset. Book still in great condition. Cover and corners has some wear but pages are free from notes and in great condition. Some marking to page block but pages are great. See images. A great book. About the book >.>.> The earth's atmosphere was not always composed of gases… in the proportions and quantities found today. It is generally agreed that when the earth was formed about five thousand million years ago, high temperatures precluded the formation of an atmosphere. High temperatures caused molecular speeds to exceed the escape velocity required by molecules to break free from the earth's gravitational attraction. This caused the original gases, probably composed of a mixture of methane and ammonia, to escape to space. As the earth began to cool, however, gases dissolved in the molten rock and released at the surface by the process of outgassing were retained as an atmosphere by the earth's gravitational attraction. Judging from present-day gases found in volcanoes, it appears likely that the early atmosphere consisted of large amounts of water vapour, carbon dioxide, sulphur and nitrogen, together with much smaller quantities of argon, chlor.
