This substantial and original contribution to Victorian studies follows the successful careers of energetic father and son. James Knowles the elder, architect of the Grosvenor Hotel, was a dour, self-made Earl Victorian who had risen to become a favoured architect of the aristocracy and who, by 1860, was involved in the construction of some of the largest buildings in central London. His son, the principal subject of this book, was the better known James Knowles, who after starting his career as an architect and designing Aldworth for Tennyon became an editor of considerable energy. He founded the Metaphysical Society, edited the Contemporary review from 1870 until1876, and then founded his own monthly review the Nineteenth Century which he edited for thirty one years from 1877 until 1908. James Knowles often appears in the memoirs of other Victorians, but not until now has he had a biography of his own. The author has gained access to wealth of unpublished letters from family sources, and she has researched deeply into his London buildings and finances. Ref LLL 6.…
