Aggiungi al carrelloHardback. Condizione: Good. Backing Hitler (2001) is one of those deeply unsettling history books whose title does the admirable service of being blunt before the contents become even blunter. There is no comforting mist here, no polite drift into abstractions about ?the period? or ?the regime? as though dreadful things simply happened of their own accord while everyone nearby was out shopping. Robert Gellately has come to ask an awkward question, and he asks it directly: how much support did Hitler actually have? As it turns out, rather more than posterity would ideally prefer. This is not a book for readers attached to the soothing fantasy that dictatorships function entirely through a handful of villains barking orders while the population remains nobly horrified in the background. On the contrary, Backing Hitler explores the far more disquieting reality that popular consent, enthusiasm, opportunism, conformity, denunciation, and ordinary accommodation can do a tremendous amount of historical heavy lifting. It is, in short, one of those works that peels away a comfortable myth and leaves you standing there with the rather uglier machinery exposed. Gellately is especially interested in the relationship between the Nazi state and German society?not merely in the obvious sense of propaganda and terror, but in the more mundane and therefore more chilling question of how a regime embeds itself in everyday life. Not everyone needed to be a fanatic; it was enough that plenty were willing, approving, fearful, compliant, ambitious, or simply adept at recognising which way the wind was blowing and deciding not to stand in it. History, as ever, is rarely ruined solely by dramatic monsters. Often it is advanced by diligent joiners, useful busybodies, and people who tell themselves that order has improved, trains appear to be running, and perhaps one needn?t ask too many questions. There is a grim irony in how modern readers often like their totalitarianism packaged: all menace at the top, all innocence below. It is narratively tidy, morally flattering, and very often misleading. Backing Hitler does not permit such conveniences. It insists on reminding us that regimes of this kind do not merely descend; they are sustained, interpreted, enforced, and normalised by human beings who continue to regard themselves as human beings throughout. Which is, naturally, the least pleasant and most useful lesson one could draw. Published by Oxford University Press, this has the proper air of a book not remotely interested in sparing your feelings. It is scholarly, serious, and sturdily committed to evidence over consolation. That is as it should be. A subject like this does not require a dramatic soundtrack; it requires clear eyes, good archives, and a historian willing to say, in effect, ?yes, but let us look more closely at who was helping.? And that is perhaps the peculiar strength of the book. It is not lurid. It does not swagger. It does not need to. Instead, it advances the sort of argument that quietly rearranges the furniture in your head. Once absorbed, it becomes much harder to think about Nazi Germany in the old simplified way, with all guilt concentrated in a few black-uniformed silhouettes while society at large hovers in tasteful ambiguity. Gellately, inconveniently but correctly, asks us to be more adult than that. Condition: Good. A suitably respectable state for a book engaged in dismantling respectable evasions. A powerful and unsettling choice for readers of modern history, political culture, and the social mechanics of dictatorship. Not exactly cheering, unless one finds intellectual honesty cheering, but important in precisely the way important books so often are.

Aggiungi al carrelloFirst edition first impression 2001. xvii+359 pages. Illustrated. Cloth a little corner bumping. Very good in dustjacket with corner wear. The Nazis never won a majority in free elections, but soon after Hitler took power most people turned away from democracy and backed the Nazi regime. Hitler won growing support even as he established the secret police (Gestapo) and concentration camps. What has been in dispute for over fifty years is what the Germans knew about these camps, and in what ways were they involved in the persecution of 'race enemies', slave workers, and social outsiders. To answer these questions, and to explore the public sides of Nazi persecution, Robert Gellately has consulted an array of primary documents. He argues that the Nazis did not cloak their radical approaches to 'law and order' in utter secrecy, but played them up in the press and loudly proclaimed the superiority of their system over all others. They publicized their views by drawing on popular images, cherished German ideals and long held phobias, and were able to win over converts to their cause. The author traces the story from 1933, and shows how war and especially the prospect of defeat radicalized Nazism. As the country spiralled toward defeat, Germans for the most part held on stubbornly. For anyone who contemplated surrender or resistance, terror became the order of the day.
